Yes Buffi,

You have turned that magical corner, doesn't it feel good when, all of a sudden everything works in synch!

Keep up the rest, elevate, ice after exercising though xx

Hello Buffi, just read your thread and am so pleased to hear of your progress! Wow, 10 mins on treadmill sounds great! Don't know what a clamshell is, prefer the insides myself, yum, yum, but 30 sure sounds impressive. I wasn't given any exercises at all (but no restrictions either), so just do as much Tai Chi as I can, and that is incredibly good for strengthening the legs anyway. I am trying to avoid actual rotation of the hip at this stage. Though not forbidden to me, it just doesn't seem sensible yet.

And going back to work too, just for a visit, sounds like a very good idea. And how clever of you to arrange to avoid the end of year!

Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year, love Jane

Way to go Buffi! I think you are doing just great and doing a litlle here and there is the way to go. I am a bit concerned about the tradmill though. You want to be REAL careful with that.

It is better to practice a natural walking pattern on the floor, but I guess to keep it at 10 miles may be ok. I still think I would wait to see what the OS says about it.

In any event, keep up the good work! Bet your coworkers were amazed!

Hi Buffi!

What a great update, you are making wonderful progress. The shoe and sock will come along in a while. You were asking about the transition from the walker to the cane and mentioning that you were working on that change. When I progressed through the assistive devices I spent a little time on 2 crutches and then 1 crutch prior to the cane. Are you able to have your PT person help you try a crutch or two first? You will get going on the cane, but might find the bridge of crutches helpful on the way.

I hope that you are remembering your ice pack, especially after a PT (personal trainer :th_heehee: session). Do also get some good naps going now that you are increasing your activity level and nice job on the clams!

Happy New Hip Year!
Cardie

Wow, Buffi I am so impressed with your exercise routine!! I am using one of those 4 foot canes (my PT prefers the one foot kind but I like the fact that it stands up on its own and I don't have to worry about dropping it and we live in a cold, icy climate so I like the stability of it).

Thanks everyone! I had PT today and had to have a nap, I just could not keep my eyes open afterwards. Some days just wear me out. I feel good but was just so tired.

One thing to note on the treadmill, I am using the heel to toe walk and really concentrating on good gait. They started me out really really slow so I could get the general walking started. I'm trying to pay strict attention to my walking habits so I don't create a habit of limping.

C Mac - Yes, those clams are a booger! My boyfriend has even done them at home with me and can't do as many as I can LOL. I take breaks at the 5's or 10's depending on the day and how I feel. When I have my next PT appt I will ask them about the walking aid transition and see if they have some tips for me.

Happy New Year!!
Buffi

Woooohoooo hello Buffi,

Promise I wasn't saying the treadmill was wrong, I was disappointed because I was thinking I would start doing that about now. I might be a little wobblier than you that's probably why. I know Ms chirpy pants here (me) babbling on about my walks don't get me wrong I'm slow on the cane and definitely funny footed at times. If I'm concentrating I do ok......

You are doing so well! I now would like to see all 5 of your puppies, it is 5 yes? I couldn't imagine having that many running around hahahahaha!

Sending you lots of love!

xxooxx

PS on my thread I asked if clams were a seafood-sushi dish can ya tell I haven't started them yet hehehehehe soon thoug I'm sure!

Hi Buffi,
Just reading up on your progress and it sounds GREAT! Your happiness at your growing strength and stability really comes through in your posts. Keep up the excellent work!
Re the shoe/sock issue. One trick I used in order to zip up a boot was to put one of those rings like you find on a keyring onto the end of the zipper - it's easier to either hook a finger or something else (end of a grabber, clothes hanger) into the ring so you can zip up your own shoe.

Wishing you a happy new year!

Thanks Anita! Hadn't thought about a ring in the zipper, but that's a great idea!

Sarah...I didn't take the treadmill comment as a bad thing at all. I find it interesting to hear all of the therapists recommendations and the tips too. I tried Charlie's tip about the "walnut" this evening and it made a huge difference in my walking. My BF is impressed with the information I get from this forum!

Y'all have a great nite and a Happy New Year!!

Happy New Years Eve and to some Happy New Years Day!!

I hope you've all had a wonderful day, this has been a really nice day here for us. One thing my BF and I do on the weekends and spare moments is animal rescue transport and we were able to pick up a beautiful Huskie today and take her to her new family. They were so thrilled and it was a great way to end the year! Just a little info on the transport thing, we drive a "leg" of a transport usually an hour or so. Rescue organizations around the country scan the shelters and look for dogs that are in hi kill shelters in the south for transport north, think NY, WI etc...why are they transported north? Unfortunately e dog laws here in the south are fairly lax and the requirement to spay or neuter your pets really doesn't exist, this makes for a huge surplus of pets here. Up north they have stricter laws and not as many dogs end up in these shelters. Long explanation but thought some of you might like the background. So far this year we have had a hand in rescuing over 100 dogs. Just our little way of helping out.

Dave made his world famous red beans and rice with sausage today and it's been sooo good and warming on such a cold day. We went to wal mart and I walked around with the cart, using that as support but wow am I tired after all that walking! I might have overdone it just a tad.....now I'm relaxing in the recliner with my snuggle blanket watching football! Does it get any better?? I just love having all these bowl games to watch!

I hope each of you has the most amazing 2012, it has been a true pleasure to "meet" each of you and go through this experience with you. May you all have a year filled with health, love and laughs!

xoxo

Ohhhh Buffi,

What a great thing you guys do with the dogs that super special....love love love!

Now it all makes sense why you have 5 babies! If I was in a house I would definitely take another puppy maybe down the road!

Glad you had a good day! I really think that's a huge part of the recovery, getting busy, having fun and doing your best..meaning even if your a little wobbly like me not to worry. Tonight I walked over to my neighbors with my cane looking like a little old lady, I'm tired tonight, but darn I wore my cute UGG slippers and got to her place in one piece and had nice time.

Happy Happy New Year!

xxooxx

Buffi, your story about the work you do for dogs is so heartwarming. A big THANKS to you and your BF for doing that.

Happy New Year!

Oh, I totally agree! Buffi, what wonderful work you do! As the adoring owner of a rescue dog, I was thrilled to read about your transporting all those dogs and taking them to happy homes. What wonderful work you do! I dread to ask, but what is a hi kill shelter? Does that mean what I think it means? So you are saving these dogs from a horrible fate. Here, the Dogs Trust undertake never to put down a healthy dog, but sadly too many of them these days are dogs that have been trained to fight and are not safe to rehome.

Happy New Year to you, Buffi, your BF and all your doggy friends!

Oh Jane - It is what you think and it's terrible. There are so many dogs that are put down for no reason other than there being a "surplus" of adoptable dogs. It is the saddest thing you can think of.

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the dog transports, it really is fulfilling!

Now for a little update. Everything is going pretty well here, just a little deep joint pain in the replaced hip. We don't know if I've just done too much or if it's the weather, the temps have been in the 20's and then the barometric pressure could be doing it. Or it could be I'm doing too much, so I've decided to slow down some and pay really strict attention to what I'm doing. Other than that I'm really thrilled with the recovery to this point. I go to the OS next Wed so I assume I'll be released to work and will go back partial days as I have to go in to an office. My BF has gone south to take care of his dad who had to have surgery this week and I'm not sure when he'll be back so I'm home alone and it's kind of strange. He's lived here for a year and we've been at home together since surgery on 11/29 so the house seems awfully empty. Well empty except for 5 dogs. LOL

Take care all!
Buffi

Hi Buffi, I also agree that the dog transport work you do is fantastic!
What a wonderful service you and your BF do!

Thanks for the explanation about why they come up from the South--I've always wondered about that. I'm in NY state and I see Petfinder ads that talk about dogs coming up from the South all the time ... too bad people can't be more responsible about spay/neutering their pets.

I have a shelter dog and she is so wonderful!!! I first saw her on Petfinder and then visited the shelter to check her out in person (or maybe I should say in "dog-son". She came running to me dragging her handler and jumped up and hugged me with her paws, trying to reach up to give me a kiss. That sealed the deal! She came home with me that day.

She is so wonderful and she is so in tune with me that I swear she reads my mind sometimes. She was my first adult shelter adoptee and I wouldn't hesitate to get one again. She is my Lucy Goosy Girl --her "official" name :-)

You are progressing with your hip great guns! Seems like it was just yesterday that you were going in for your surgery. Time flies! Isn't it great that they can replace our messed up joints with new ones that actually work?!?! YIIIIPPPPPPEEEEEEE!!

Dorothy

Hi Buffi,

Sorry about the joint pain, hopefully you will rest up and it will quickly go away. I jumped back into work this week, Tuesday and I've babbled about being sore from sitting at the desk keep that in mind if you go back soon, maybe take a cushion or something to help soften the chair. I think we are both so early in our recoveries any little extra activity will be a slight set back.

I'm thrilled you are doing so well! Dorothy you are right it does seem like yesterday we were all having our surgeries.

I giggled this morning I went to the supermarket and then petsmart ALONE and felt good, yes I'm slow and look a little odd with my slight limp and moving like a snail while pushing cart.....but it's a good feeling I have my independence back!

Have a good rest of the week!

xxooxx

Hi Buffi

Sorry that you are experiencing some discomfort, let's hope it is temporary. rest, elevate and ice and watch some blah daytime tv.

The single leg raises set me back two weeks, moving, physically, and have found that I get a little discomfort on the operated side - more like stiffness really.

I go back to work next week to the office, graduated, just three days a week.. For three weeks which should be just about right! Mixed feeling about it, but money has to be earned!

Take care whilst BF is away.. Our house is empty without hubby this week :(

Buffi - I'll best you just did too much. As Sandy says, rest, ice and elevate. Things should settle down pretty quickly. If not then mention the pain to your OS when you see him next week.

Please let us know how you are doing!
