So happy for you that day two turned out better! Enjoying the picture of you resting, icing, mind enjoying the weather.

I'm glad you are doing a little better, I really hope the ointment works!!!

You may need to go to awound care specialist. I once had a surgical sight that simply would not heal for months. Surgeon kept blowing it off, but after all, when the cutting is done, their job is over. That's the attitude of many of them, not mine. Anyway, went to the w/c specialist, he swabbed it, had a staff infection in it. Gave me something for it and in 2 weeks I was completely healed. It's worth a shot!

Reading some of the postings this morning, I feel so bad for people. So many of us have been threatened with the talk of having a MUA and so early on in our recovery process. As much as I listen and weigh each piece of information I get from here and the P/T and the surgeon ( which from the surgeon hasn't been much) in the end I have begun to follow my own instincts on what I should do and for moving and activity I am feeling good about my decisions. We are in the end in charge of what can be done and what can't, we were the ones who consented to surgery, and if your like me knew what I was getting into to a certain amount, never seen any materials about MUA or was even discussed prior to knee replacement surgery. Had I seen that info I may have read it over, would have probably still went thru with everything. The only thing that stick in my mind is that the O.S. assistance said at my pre-op appt, it's painful I am not going to lie and your going to dislike me those first few weeks..........but you know what for me those first few weeks I felt pretty good, so I didn't dislike them at that point, maybe a 3,4 or 5 weeks or now. So now after writing a book, my main thought I am trying to get across is go with your gut feelings, we are very easily swayed in the beginning, when were already from surgery and the start of recovery feeling the most defeated. Were all strong individuals especially after we've made it thought the surgery and early weeks of recovery, count on yourself the most to know what to do for yourself. Have a good day folks, enjoy the holiday weekend.

@34120 thank you for that input, if I don't start seeing results soon, I will see about going back to the O.S. sooner and asking for more to be done about this. Need it healed shut, so fearful of infection. And to know that once your on the right path healing can happen quickly. The rest of my incision healed so nice and quickly also.

Are you keeping the incision covered while at school?

@KarriB @Josephine and others here's what my knee is looking like this morning. Have some redness I know I am to confine the ointment to the wound so the redness maybe caused from touching good tissue. Minimal drainage on dressing. Hoping the dressing all stays on and in place I find that challenging yesterday I covered over it all with vet wrap to hold it together while I worked want to leave it more open today for air cover but not smothered

The one photo is a picture after I place the ointment into the wound, I then are to cover it with a pc of gauze wet with sterile water. And then cover with that thin gauze spool wrap. So the moisture wicks away soon, but I am following the directions, I would imagine to wet it so the gauze doesn't stick to the wound scab and such.

Because of my infection I'm always overly cautious about open wounds, even though my incision wasn't even open. Mine seeped like a river through a closed incision. Hopefully Josephine will see it and have advise. When is your OS appointment?

@zzevi i appreciated your philosophy of knee replacement post. A lot of thought went into that, and in the end, I think everyone would have to agree with you.

@KarriB appt isn't till Sept 19th, but if I feel sick this coming week or incision looks redder and more inflamed I will contact them. I do see the P/T on Tues and he was the one for the most part who talked to the surgeon about trying this ointment treatment to help with healing.

Having a heck of a time keeping the dressing on, wanted to put it together and leave it more like the P/T's instructions, but the dressing completely fell down my leg and re-exposed my wound. Started from scratch added more ointment and clean wet gauze and then wrapped, then went over it with a ace bandage the ace bandage didn't want to hold by using tape, had to resort to using safety pins to hold it in place.

Any suggestions on how to keep wound dressings in place, this way will work, but I did want it to be able to get a bit more air circulation around the knee.

I had to keep my incision completely covered for about a month and changed it several times a day due to it seeping even after the infection surgery. Paper tape (I think that's what it's called) is hypoallergenic and kept my gauze fairly well. Of course I wasn't bending my knee at all, it was straight. What sort of tape are you using?

@KarriB I'm using paper tape also, some I had on hand. Have to be careful with tape as my skin gets rashy if I leave it on in one place to long. Never been sure if that is a latex allergy or just a kind of allergy to the glue. I am fair skinned so my skin does break down very easily.
I think if I were just not move about I would do pretty good, but any movement or bending is causing slippage of the dressing. It's doing pretty good, now that I secured the ace bandage over it.
Hoping all this extra care for the wound is beneficial in the end, I am at the point now after the holiday if I can't start to see improvement, I will be looking for answers. I've given it time to heal, I've kept it clean, I've exposed it to air and at times I've had it wrapped. I've followed all the directions I was given, now it's time for the professionals to start giving me some answers. Out of any area of the incision this is the point of most stress from bending, any movement seems to pull on the area.
After reading your postings and someone else that had staph, I will look into it further, I don't want to ruin this new knee joint.

You may be able to buy a larger gauze bandage to use when you're at work. My OS gave me some in the beginning, but I was changing so often I just used the gauze they gave me by the boxes. The paper tape did begin to break down my skin after a while. If I were you, I'd want to know why it hasn't closed and it has to impede your bending.

Santyl is very expensive as you you have found out. According to the drug rep that came to the hospital to explain it's use it will only interact with dead skin cells. In itself I doesn't heal the wound. IMO I don't understand his use of this ointment for your wound and I would recommend that if Your OS won't see you that you be seen by your GP/PCP so that you can get better help with healing your incision. You may veer well might need to be seen by a wound care doctor as @34120 suggested.

I give you a lot of credit for your patience, if that would have happened to me I would have already gone to the my OS office and would not leave until he saw me, IMO you should not be waiting another 2 weeks to be seen for an open wound that is not healing after approx 10 weeks!!!

After seeing your pics, I beg you, PLEASE go to a wound care specialist!

@Josephine , could you take a look at zzevi's photos in post #147? She isn't seeing her OS for another 2-3 weeks.

Yes, I'm here!

@zzevi I really think you are doing yourself a grave disservice by constantly applying moist dressings. As far as I can see, this is NOT an open wound. It just has a deep scab which will dry up and fall off if you left it alone and uncovered. By all means apply a temporary dry dressing when you go to work or shopping to prevent it getting sore but this state of affairs is caused only by you constantly changing dressings and applying ointment. What is that ointment, anyway?

I do believe I also asked you to put something beside the wound when you photograph it - the tip of a pen or a ruler. As you have it, there is nothing to tell me what the size of this wound is and that's important.

@zevvi I had a short section of my incision that took forever to close. The skin stretches so much from activity it impedes healing. Keep it loosely covered so it can breath. Mine took almost 4 months to close 100% and seeped exudate the whole time.
