kneeworn made it to the other side

Doing my homework I noticed a hard area in my Quads just above the kneecap. The other knee is soft there. That is where I feel the tightness when I try to bend it. Is that adhesions or scar tissues. That area does not feel any warmer than other part of the knee.

I doubt if it is scar tissue or adhestions. My guess is you have swelling (indicated by the tightness you feel) and it would be good for you to ease off the activity a bit. You could try giving yourself no homework for a while. Your body will benefit from a day or two in between those PT workouts to heal and recover.

I especially think this may be the case because of your post earlier today about how your knee was doing. Also....what are you taking for pain meds since you're upping the activity in your PT?

I think it's probably part of the incisional scar. It should decrease in time.

Ohhhhhhh.......I didn't understand that....thought it was above the incision. Momma Hen is right on target as usual!!!

Great day at PT. I got 106 on my own and 110 with assistance on my flexion. Yipee! The knot in the top of the incision is some scarred tissue forming and she massaged it to help release it. It helped I think. We are keeping homework to just once a day then stretching when ever I get a chance the rest of the day. She is pleased with my progress and thinks I am doing fine. She says I am being too hard on myself thinking I should be further. She said the younger patients have a more intact nerve system than older patients hence the older ones are able to push through the flexion easier with less pain.

I rode my upright bike 5 minutes last night. She says that is fine but not to go over 10 minutes and to put the seat up high.

Thank the Lord for a positive morning. I needed this.

Hi, Donna. I'm so happy you are having a positive day. I am having a nice quiet day here today. It is snowing like mad out there and I am so happy we can just stay home today. I went to the doctor's yesterday and the roads were terribly icy.

Sleep continues to escape me most nights due to knee pain, but the days are getting better and better. I must admit that you are way more faithful to your physio exercises on home days than I am. I always try to do some, but I do way more when I actually go to physio.

Hope you have a great day!

Great report, Donna....GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Maggie.....ohhh, a "soup and chili" day for you. Sounds cozy!

It sure was Josephine and thanks. I showed her so she could help me work it out and she massaged it before we worked it. That is the point where it always felt so restrictive and tight too. Maybe I'm on my way once we get the scar tissue softened and swelling down.

Thanks Josephine!

Would it be so bad to take one day this weekend and do no PT other than what ADL movements provide. I need a mental health day and I've got a bad attitude this morning. I'm tierd of all the aching. Just one morning I would like to wake up not be stiff.

I'm starting to wonder when I should start weaning off the narcotics. I'm going to discuss this with OS Monday. Truthfully it starts to ache when 4-5 hours are up and gets real crampy and achy the longer I wait. Most days this week I have remembered to take my daily dose of Celebrex but forgot yesterday. I thought maybe there may be a medicine that would hold my pain and just use the hydrocodone at night or when pain breaks through. Having been on it this long I wonder how long it takes to wean off it. I really just want to feel comfortable so I feel like bending, moving and doing things.

Mom took me out to lunch after therapy yesterday. We were gone about an hour and a half. I was so worn out that I just laid around the rest of the day and my knee was pissy from sitting in a chair that long. She wants me to come over for a half day next week but it sounds like more than I feel up too. I'm still napping in bits and like to get my leg up often and ice. I know she feels like I need to get out but really I'm content in my comfortable home.

Sorry for the whine session.

You need to start weaning off when your body tells you to and not before! Eventually you will find yourself 'forgetting' to take a pill at the appointed hour and next day it might be longer. Next day might be worse and you need them on schedule. That's how it goes so don't try and set a programme for it. Just let it happen.

From what I've read from other US members on here, the last person you need to 'talk to' about this is your surgeon - unless you trust him implicitly to be sympathetic and caring!

As for can you take a day off? Aren't you already? If not, why not? Even God had a day off once a week! :th_heehee:

Kneeworn, if you are 'just' using Celebrex during the day, if I am reading correctly, that's either pretty good or may not be enough. When I got tired of the big time narcotics and wanted more coverage, I switched to Tramadol/Ultram ER. I used it until 6 months and weaned off of it.

Later I used Celebrex off and on until I ran out...don't really think I need it any longer, but am taking Advil for another issue so that may be why I don't need the Celebrex.

Thank-you sweet Josephine. I feel so guilty when I shouldn't when I omit my excersizes. As I told Ray today do I not make progress because I do the excersizes sometimes or do I not make progress because I have not done them.

This morning it is very fussy and does not want to straighten. It has been straight yesterday and before. There is my sign isn't it?

So I'm on the couch with ice and my legs up as you showed me. I'll nap, read and
watch funny movies. As far as my meds I am going to stop setting the alarm but listen to my body and document the times.

Donna, frankly I think you need a few more of these "rest" days!!! It won't hurt at all with your ROM and it just might allow that swelling to go down and release the ROM that is there but hidden with the inflammed tissue.

Please don't feel guilty when you are taking proper care of yourself!!!

I'm with Jo on the pain meds. That stiffness you're feeling is a symptom of pain and staying with your meds will help. It may also be that your feelings are also the result of feeling pain. You know, pain comes in many forms and it doesn't have to be knife-stabbing, earth-throbbing, grit your teeth pain to impact both your mind and body. Even a low-grade inner ache can do a number on you.

As a comparison...I stayed with my prescription pain meds for a little over 2 months. You would be firmly in the "normal" range if you continue to take them for a while....no matter WHAT your surgeon might tell you.

I lounged around on the couch and napped off and on all day yesterday. I took myself off timed hydrocodone every four hours and took it a total of four times yesterday. At midnight when we went to bed I took another dose which I count for todays doses. I slept until 8:00am and I feel rested. My knee is stiff. I may try to do my ROM excersizes today but first things first is my morning tea and we will see what the day holds.

Thanks Josephine and Jamie. I am fighting fatigue and feeling defeated and down in the dumps. I had hopes to feel better and be more active by now but tomorrow is still the start of week 7. I know I am also doing ok on my progress. It just gets to you as you guys all know. Sorry for more whine this morning. It does help to have folks who understand.

My knee is almost straight this morning and swelling down again to closer to the well leg size. Yeah!

Well there you are! :thmb:

Don't 'fight' fatigue and please don't feel down in the dumps. We've all been there in one way or another. Trick is to just chill out and let it all wash over you. It will pass in time. You'll see.

Yes...Jo is soooo right!! Your body is telling you it NEEDS to rest right now. It's what you are supposed to be doing at this point.

Embrace the nap!!!

Love the kitty picture Jamie. Think I'll join him. My mom and her friend just left. Ray fixed them lunch after they went to church. I did do GENTLE ROM this morning then iced and elevated. Next a shower before lunch with Mom and now ice and elevate again. I feel a nap sneaking up on me. I may just let it catch me.
