Knee Infection July 16 - had a revision due to infection

Wow! 2000 mg? A probiotic did help me with stomach issues and when I changed probiotics for a period of time I could tell the difference, I was having to get to a rest room much quicker and more often. I hope the wound nurse can help solve this problem, I'm sure you just want this done with now.

I am living on probiotics and yogurt! Certainly does help. And then there is the cottage cheese, peanut butter etc I eat extra for more protein to help it heal.

Yep, my doc wanted me on a high protein diet also. Eggs, sausage every morning, lots of red meat and chicken for a few months. My soft tissue was a wreck and I still have angry soft tissue that created a lump on the inside of my calf.

Saw the OS today. He said my abscess needed some attention so that it will close. So he is taking me back in the OR, opening it up, cleaning it and stitching it shut. He's not knocking me out, some happy meds, lots of Novocain It should be about an inch long and stitched shut. Take about 30 minutes. We'll do it in two weeks.

So glad to get that over with.

After 30 days of trying to keep it clean and no change in size it is time to do something.

Will he take a sample for culture while in there? Are you allowed to bend or keeping it straight right now?

I didn't think to ask. I should have made it clearer. The abscess is not infected. It s smaller than a pea and open. We've been cleaning it nightly and it got smaller for awhile but it stopped shrinking. He wants that skin closed. It's like a tiny hole on my shin so bending is not an issue.

Ahh, well it's good that you can still bend. I would want it closed too, less chance of infection.

Wound care nurse came. She hopes to close it without surgery. She stuffed it with tape permeated with silver. I change it every three days. Change the dressing daily. Regular nurse comes on Wednesday to check it out and measure it.

My eye specialist reduced my steroids in half. Body really didn't like that. It's taken almost a week to improve. Bordering on a RA flare. No fun at all. Feet and hand hurt which makes walking a pain. No pun intended. Hands can't hold the walker and feet just hurt.

Tough times for you. I am sorry that you have to have to go through this, but would be great if the silver treatment works! I am pulling for you.

My OS had a Silverlon bandage on my knee also. I hope it closes up soon and you'll have one less thing to worry about.

Week 16 and my knee hurts. Could be from overwork or simple stiffness. One requires ice and rest. The other, slow return to walking. I did overwork my knee at the beginning of the the week- a lot of campaigning for my husband. Then we did a day car trip on Thursday. Standing doesn't hurt...getting there kills me.

All this is complicated by the fact that it could be part of a RA flare as I had no meds for it since July. I know theRA is busy because my finger nodule is back for a visit.

Right now I am icing as it seems to be working best. Any brilliant minds out there?

The answer is simple.....rest, ice, slow down on the activity a bit and take something for pain. This would not be a time to increase walking until you are free of the pain.

It's been awhile since I wrote but nothing has changed. My leg is still not closed. Walking is getting better but nothing exciting. Still using the walker.

Did learn I am going to be a Guinea pig for the VNA. They are trying a brand new med to get my leg to totally close up.. Should cut the healing time down to a couple of weeks. They'll take weekly pictures and if it works well they will use it on others patients.

More later. This story could get depressing!!

It's been a long, tedious journey for you, Chris!
I do hope that this new, trial treatment is a success.

:tree:

It could also be a success:). I would love to know how it works out. I was having a problem with a part of the incision not healing. They had to reopen everything a couple of weeks ago...hopefully it won't be so difficult this time.

I'm sorry to hear the incision hasn't closed yet. Is it the same scab that is a page back here on your thread?

@KarriB yes it's all the same. Tomorrow the nurse will be in and I'll take pictures. I no longer bandage it on my own. I know how but they are measuring it twice a week

Walking is better. Two canes are getting easier. Working on endurance with a stationary bike.

Enjoying things more. Getting out more. Christmas was fun at my sons and my sister. No need to cook or clean.

Christmas can be a challenge as we lost our daughter to lupus almost five years ago. While she had her own home she would stay on the farm with us during Christmas. She would have been 32 this year.

So sorry for the loss of your daughter. Holidays are hard when part of our heart is missing. I am happy to hear you're getting out more. Hopefully this new treatment will put an end to this recovery soon.

Finally good news from the OS. The small open area below my knee is closed!! I still have a superficial open area above my knee and it is healing nicely. Soon closed I am hoping.

The wound care nurse is going to try something new and there is promise it could heal in a couple of weeks.

I see ID doc on the 18th and and my meds should be reduced. I am looking forward to that.

It's been a long haul but perhaps I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Meds will be forever but that's a small price to pay for a healthy knee. It's seems I get to keep my leg.
