Knee Infection July 16 - had a revision due to infection

It's just great to hear how well you are recovering! :yes!::happydance::yay::spin:

I'm so excited for you. You will be getting more and more mobile all the time now. :walking:

Well, ten weeks out and it's getting realy complicated. My opening from having the drain removed has been healing very slowly. I just thought it was because it was healing from the inside out. The OS saw it at our last visit and told me to keep an eye on it,which I did. Thursday I noticed it looked strange. Yesterday I called his office for antibiotics. They wanted to see me but there was no time. So today I went to their urgent care unit it. It is severely infected. There is a stitch in there and it won't heal until it comes out. So, I have my antibiotics and must go back on Monday. No breakfast, nor water that day cause they think he will take me to the or to clean it out and remove the stitch. He may send me home or keep me depending on what they find.

, hope the infection is limited to just the drain.
DH had a stitch left in an abdominal wound, it looked better as soon as it came out. Then his incisional wounds were able to close.
Keep us posted on how you are doing,
:fingersx::fingersx::fingersx:

Why updates from my phone aren't here is confusing. It's now March and things are going well. My incision is slowly closing. I cannot believe that a surgery on 12/8 is still closing. No sign of infection yet.

Fingers crossed for you that you continue to heal, albeit slowly. :friends:

Over the weekend we noticed my leg was pink bit Hubby and I couldn't decide if it was cellulitis, which I have a history of, or my knee. By Tuesday it was definitely the knee. Came home from vacation and they operated yesterday. But they could not do a typical redo with a spacer and then another operation. They had put extenders on my metal parts and they are difficult and risky to remove. So they did it as a typical first time redo and may have to put me on antibiotics forever. Nothing has been decided permanently yet. Blood and knee cultures have to be grown and antibiotics chosen.

This has been a thrill so far.... Dripping with sarcasm.

So sorry to hear you're having problems with your knee. But it sounds like you were quick to address it which is very good.

Which knee is this that's acting up? I'd like this latest information to one of your recovery threads, but I don't know which one to use.

Sorry to hear you are going through an infection. Glad you caught it ASAP, do you have a surgeon who does lots of revisions? Hope they have your lab results back soon and can get your started on antibiotics, and on your way to recovery.
I am going to tag @Josephine , not sure I understand exactly what was done to your knee.
What are extenders? Did they leave in your original replacement, or did they remove it and put in new replacement parts?

So sorry to read this, but glad you had it taken care of right away. I know you're discouraged at this point, but please try to be grateful it was discovered and they acted upon it quickly. Take care, and give us an update when you can.

I am so sorry to hear of your situation. I, too, had an infection in my TKR. Mine began with a high fever about a month after the TKR, then puss/seeping a day later. I had an antibiotic wash (2x in one surgery-OS washed out, then had the whole team leave & scrub again before returning to be sure no one was carrying anything) and spacer replaced. Nine days in hospital/rehab, picc line + oral antibiotics and after the staples came out my knee began seeping again. My OS suggested a third surgery may be needed to put in an antibiotic spacer.
We prayed and prayed the meds would go to the infected area. A month later I had clean bandages and was allowed to start bending again ( was in an Imbolizer to keep from bending). But my body revolted against the antibiotics and quit making white cells, so I had to have the picc line pulled and oral stopped after 6 weeks. Now I'm on a low dose of doxycycline and riding a bike or swimming everyday.

I merged your threads as per this request One thread for your recovery please?
Please keep to one thread about your recovery.

The reasons for this are that it
1. makes it easier for guests to read the continuous story of a member's recovery - the most important reason
2. avoids people duplicating and repeating things like links to articles
3. helps us to refresh on what you've had done and when, plus what advice was given previously
5. keeps all advice previously given on hand for the poster
6. makes it unnecessary for the member to keep repeating surgery details
7. just makes it easier for everyone all round!

Thank you very much!

After four days in the hospital they are finally talking rehab. My infection is simple (not a resistant strain) - many meds to cover it.

The extenders are on the mental parts of my knee replacement. They are put on to protect my bones- making them longer.

My infection is in my bones so I must take IV antibiotics for months....6-10 weeks anyway. Then I will have to take oral antibiotics on a rotating basis so it doesn't become resistant.

Therapy is going well. OT only needs to see me three times a week. PT is pleased. I walked much further than I have before this stage of recovery.

Glad to hear that it is a simple infection......certainly not simple for you, but you know what I mean. So sorry you had to go through all of this.....

Still waiting placement in rehab. 11 days in hospital so far. PICC line in and ready to go except now I have a suspicious lump on left hip. Getting an ultrasound to check for fluid. If an abscess it must be drained.

Surgery and PT going great. Wish the rest would straighten out.

PICC line makes things easier, but you'll need some Saran Wrap if/when you're allowed to shower. PICC line dressing needs to stay dry, so I wrapped it several times with Saran Wrap. But I wasn't allowed to shower for a month after my wash out surgery. Hope the lump is nothing serious, but they aspirate just to be sure. Eleven day is no fun at all. Hope you're into a rehab soon. Are you weight bearing?
