Its Shimmy Time!!

Hi, Everyone,

I went to my first post-op visit yesterday, just shy of three weeks from surgery. The doc said the x-rays look good, and it was nice to see my new hardware. I have ceramic on cross-linked poly but set off the alarm at the airport both coming and going. In Vegas they did a pat down and on the way home in Los Angeles they had me go through a machine and put my arms up....much quicker, btw.

The bandages are off and the incision looks really good especially for just under three weeks! There were no staples, just little pieces of tape (i'm sure something else) holding it together. My left leg/incision is still swollen a bit, but the doc said nothing to worry about, something about just being deep pooling blood? (may not have the exact wording there). He said my adbuctor muscles need to be focused on by the PT and to come back in six weeks. I am also no closer to ditching the walker, but I can tell that my legs are getting a little stronger here and there. I'm waiting patiently for that magical moment when I turn the corner everyone tells me about! LOL I'm still barely taking pain meds. Tylenol maybe twice a day. He also said I have no restrictions really, just be careful and not to externally rotate and put my leg behind me at the same time as that is the way it was dislocated for the procedure.

I sat on the floor this morning, actually squatted down. It felt good to be able to do that. I then sat and stretched a little bit. I was able to actually crawl...lol...like that's a handy maneuver. My thighs feel tight, almost like from a little swelling, but only noticeable to me on my left side incision site. That and the incision is probably the sensation I'm feeling. My PT said I don't have the ROM to get on a bike, but I do as I just sat on mine at home and I have more than enough ROM to cycle. I've been walking on my treadmill at a very slow pace while holding on and have been doing about 1 mile...broken down into 2-3 sessions...a day. I started at .05 mph and am now at 1.2 mph. I just do a little. Then get lazy. Then do a little bit more alter in the day.

I am very happy with my results...minus the walker ditching. But, like I said, I'm nowhere close to that yet and I know it. I am able to drive as well. When I went to PT the other day, Charles came with me and I directed him to the clubhouse bar where this place is located and he had lunch. I looked at him after PT and said, I'm drivng...lol. I knew that I was cleared to but just hadn't been. It was like nothing. As soon as I can walk without the walker, I can start working again! But in the mean time, enjoying the lazy life...and actually getting good at it! LOL

I hope all are well and recoveries are going smoothly! I've had some internet problems at home so haven't been on all that often.

Take care! XOXO

Donna :)

Donna you are a super star! Well done in such a short time!

Keep working on the muscle strength - it will come. One day you will realise - hey this is easy!

Thanks, Jaycey! Looking forward to that moment.

Thought all.along since I started this.process.that seeing my implants would freak me.out, but it.gives.me .strange sense.of. comfort knowing how strong and secure they look.

This was a lifetime e,experience Nd am so thankful for it...e en this early.on!

Wow, donna! You are doing so awesome! I can't believe you could get up and down off of the floor - that's great! You are the poster child for hip replacements! I am so glad that you are doing so well. And driving, too. Before this i was always out. Always running errands or volunteering at the kids' schools - and yesterday was my first outing since coming home from the hospital - and it was to the doctor's office and i was excited to go :yahoo: today i ventured out with my mother to the rite aid and didn't want to come home. Funny how it is the little things that mean so much:th_heehee: glad to hear that your appointment went well.

Hugs to you :friends:

Good on you Donna you are doing so well. Interesting all my exercises now are for the Abductor muscles it is hard work but is going to get us walking better. You are making amazing progress. Have had two weeks at work now and getting used to it again!!!Best wishes.

I'm so happy for you Donna, doing great! Now don't get impatient with the walker, it's good for you and helps correct the gait/limping. Your day will come.

Hi Donna, I have been following your post since pre op and all I can say is you rock girl. Three weeks and already on a tread mill and stationary bike, wow. Listen to your body though and lets have no set backs.

Thanks, Renate, Stu and Dave. I feel good...just the whole walking thing without support. I hold on on the treadmill.

Renate, i actually tried...very gently...the pilates machine. It felt good and very natural. Im thinking ill find that secret walking without any support muscle! Lol

:yay: :yay: :yay: You are doing so good !!! Just decorate your walker a little bit and you will be styling. You will be able to give it up soon so just be patient. My only issue I had for a bit with it was the shoulder pain from pressing down so hard when I didn't feel I had enough support. Hope you aren't having any issues from it.

I'm sure Charles is delighted to know how well you are doing.

Hi, Julie, Not my shoulder, but my wrists at times. Not too bad though, but I do notice it. More so when I'm on the treadmill for some reason.

Charles is very pleased with the results. :) He was shocked when I showed him a copy of my x-rays. Not sure what he was thinking, but he was so surprised to see how far down the femur the stem of the implant goes.

Btw, I set off metal detectors and had my first pat down. It's ceramic on plastic but there is cobalt the doc said.

You silly girl, get off that Pilates machine! It's way to early, probably in another 2 months. But I have to confess that I did some 'gentle rebounding' today :yes 4:. Was lying on the carriage thinking 'dislocation' and sweating. But this hip is pretty darn good! I have gotten strong since I started Pilates two weeks ago, and I can now do stairs the normal way.
You be patient and hang in there.

I saw that you said in Vegas they patted you down and in LA they put you in scanner. When I go to Tampa to leave I'm just going to tell them from the start and if they have a scanner I'll just tell them I'm willing to just go right there instead of the ole pat down. Mines titanium.

Isn't it something to look at those xrays?? I haven't got my left one yet, they forgot to give it to me, but I do have my right one. I have a shorter version of the stem, but still to see it down in the femur is something. You look at it and wonder how does it work sooooo smoothly. It's such a difference now to do things like I used to and know theres something in there doing it??

I need to get going on getting down on the floor (you amaze me) and get some stretching in.

You are the poster woman for bi-lat hips !!! :yes 4::yes 4:

Poster woman...lol. I am pleased so far, just make sure you have something to help you up with, like a low bench you can use your arms ro pull yourself up with. It felt really good to lay on the floorand also to do simple hamstring stretches.

renate, the doc gave me his okay to do the pilates....im holding off on the rebounder portion for a while. He said as long as i dont externally rotate and lift my leg behind and to do as tolerated, i can. I was very careful and believe this can only help strengthen and get me closer to being strong enough to walk without support. It was totally comfortable and doable for me. I wa so glad to read it helped with stairs for you. I dont have stairs in my home, but just a step up in a few places and i can tell im getting stronger with that, but i cant imagine tackling an entire staircase.

I am so glad i bought that machine! I bet it felt good to sweat with the rebounder. What a nice new sensation to feel a strong hip instead of a weak one! So happy for you and look forward to that day when i can completely trust it. Ithink thats a big part of this process....trusting in it to be there and erasing the old pattern of compensating, etc.

Julies, after iwent through the detector the first time and set it off...which i had never even considered for some reason...they just escorted me over to the pat-down girl. She told mei could have bypassed the pat-down by requesting the machine...not sure whatshe called it. But in LA, they just sent me over to it. My doc is sending me a card so i can alert them. Ull find out what the machine is called and just go there from now on.

My OS office orderd my cards from the manufacturer, but they haven't come in yet so they said they would just write me a letter as well and just let them know from the start like you said. I'll just request the scanner and tell them I have 2 hip replacements. :snork:

Hi guys! My brother works for TSA and he told me to always allow extra time when flying for getting checked out. Not all airports have the scanners and sometimes you can be treated to the scanner AND a patdown depending on the airport and sometimes they just randomly select people for patdowns. So for us, we should always allow more time for security screenings when flying.

Glad you are doing so well, donna. Talk about walkers - i have huge red marks and callouses on the heels of my hands from all of the weightbearing. Can't wait to see how my hands look by the first week of october when i get cleared to switch to a cane!

I didn't realize you had no restrictions. Lucky you! All I can say is: go for it the gentle way. I am amazed how fast I got stronger on the machine. You are doing great!

Donna....man, I miss a few days here on the forum and look what all you're doin', girl!!! WOW!!!! I'm so happy for your fast progress. Keep up the great recovery.

Donna W is right - always allow extra time for security anywhere where you might set off alarms.

If you have to be manually scanned they have to get staff to do it. Females need a female security guard and if there isn't one on the gate you may have to wait until they find someone.

I set off the alarm boarding Eurostar two weeks ago . Luckily there were staff on the gate!
