I almost really messed up today. My girlfriend and her son were visiting today. So I decided to TRY for a bowel movement. I grabbed my walker and preceded to the throne. One my way I decided to scar Tyler for life. (Moonshot !!! ) I dropped my gown on purpose but as I did that I almost fell. Good thing for my catlike reflexes. NO MORE HORSE PLAYING. ! 75 ROM TODAY.! PS, BM unsuccessful :-(

Wow, am I late to the party or what!?

First, welcome to the other side. Seems like you came through with flying colors, good for you.
:thumb:

Second, don't you dare fall! Seriously. We have had members slip and fall and break wrists, rip open incisions, get infections, not a fun time.

And oh the picture I have now...... gah..... I think Tyler and I are both scarred for life. :loll:

Your a boy getting your " back door" out in hospital!!!!.
How you feeling today icep. My first day after op was the worst!
I'm 7 days post now gone like a shot, swelling gone down a bit today by 1.5" so I'm resting again today and icing.
I'm so bored....! Watching SKY but it's all pooh mate.
My knee is still very stiff when I was in hospital I managed the same as you 85*\ 90* bend now it's gone right down the pan! I've been doing my PT on my own at home in small doses but I swell up after so I've cut it by half.
Going to See my Local Dr tomorrow he may be able to answer a few questions. Let me no how your doing and when your off home. Ron Fox.

Yay :yay:You are doing Fantastic-O ....So happy to read your report! You are going to be a fun person to follow! Great attitude makes life sooooo much better!!! Hope you have a wonderful "PAIN-FREE" day today!!!

Here's a place where I'll agree with everyone else when it comes to meds . Let Milk of Magnesia and Colace be your friends . Those BM's while on pain meds can be a pain in the butt . Wouldn't want you to bust a blood vessel in your forehead trying to pass a brick .

Rick

I swear by metamucil, a teaspoon of the unsugared stuff in a full glass of water, hold your nose and drink it down, up to 3x a day if necessary. Works like a charm. Might be necessary to take a dose or two a day while on opiates to keep everything moving.

Yeah , I agree. Dont want to pass a brick. Its 5:30 am and slept for what seems like 4 hours staight . Even slept on my side for a bit. ?Tonight was a good night .pain management is great. Night nurses make it hard to want to leave! But hopefully today I go home. Although I wouldnt shed a tear if I stayed "one more night. "Knee is stiff right now but ankle pumps are very easy.can even lift leg on its own about 12-14 inches straight up. I really have chicken legs so swelling will be minimal. Even with this wrap on my knee, its not too swollen , although once removed I believe my ROM may increase 5 to 8. The bandages are a little tight. Compression socks are unbearable . Nurse said my lunges are great and health wise very good. So we sort of compromised. No compression socks and ill lay here moving my feet around and blowing this air ball plastic blow in contraption. So far my biggest mistake was yesterday night after my spinal wore off and compression socks were PUMPING I thought that the throbbing was normal and could be tolerated only to learn that silly me should of accepted the meds. So for 2 and half hours I throbbed. Im dreading the removal of the nerve block which will be removed today , meds will be givin 1 hour prior . Hope once removed , pain management will continue as well as the last 24 hours. As of now im on tramadol and oxy. And the nerve block. I learned from the spinal to prepare for the removal of nerve block. Well folks its 615 am I would normally be on my way to work !! Ha ha yippie !!! :-) no work for 12 weeks. Well, ill check in later !!

Im home !!!. This ordeal is going super fast . 2 days in the hospital. I actually would have preferred to stay one more day. Treatment was excellant EXCEPT for this mornings nurse who had amnesia. I Live 4 miles from hospital so the ride was brief and smooth. Got home and immediately realized that my house is not setup like the hospital room. I had to make a few alterations while girlfriend got the meds. Also the 40Lb CPM got delivered and hooked up to leg. Now it gets good. I sent girlfriend to get the meds not realizing the nurse with amnesia called it in to the wrong store. Also I sent girlfriend with the wrong insurance card. Im (doped up).Girlfriend ran errands while I used the CPM. GF taking a long time , meds wearing off and im trying to take this 30-40lb machine off my bed to situate my living room into a hospital room. I dont recommend trying this two days post op but I had no idea the CPM weighed this much especially while my foot was strapped into it. Needless to say when my GF arrived I needed oxy 10 mg and oxy 5mg IR. My skinny leg with minor swelling is now skinny leg with major swelling.

After all this, its anti climatic . I full load of meds ,A nice dinner , a make out session and barrage of phone calls. Now night night time . My living room resembles a hospital room minus the monitors. Bonus for me ,a noisy refrigerator. now im pooped after all im 2 days into recovery. Thank you @Referee for the app Med Coach !!!

Now you can be like me and watch the Olympics all day and begin an intimate relationship with your recliner . There's a cool 8 ball app you can download on your phone to eat up a lot of time . Being retired ( my wife made me ) I've become somewhat of a professional at being bored a lot but it can still be a challenge . That'll probably be hard on you also . But hang in there cup cake . You're on your way to doing great .

Rick

Thanks Rick. I see you are about 3 weeks out and that you joined bonesmart 2 and half months before your surgery. Identical to me but 2 weeks behind you. And, im sure you read bonesmart alot pre op. Has the surgery lived up to the pre op hype ? I was really surprised by the energy drain doing the simplest task and while on my feet the swelling and tightness on the knee. I mean I read alot about it but until it actually happens , its pretty powerful. I have never been seriously ill or in a car crash or broke bones before so this helpless feeling sucks. Now I have cotton mouth and slighty nauseated. Not a big deal in the big picture. The surgery itself was like Foxy said over in a "flash". Best of luck Rick , keep it rolling .

If I recall correctly the CPMs have been indicted for increasing swelling so if you find that happening, especially since you are being good with moving on your own, you might consider backing off a bit on the contraption.

I read a lot but because I knew my doctor does things a bit differently, I took everything with a grain of salt and that my recovery may be somewhat different .My doctor doesn't prescribe icing, he prefers movement to deal with swelling and it works for his patients . I take my pain meds as needed and walk a few minutes every hour I'm awake . If your doctor says to ice then by all means ice . We're brought up taught that when something is swollen to ice it so what I've done has kinda went against that but I understand now why my doctor does what he does .

I had my first major surgery in 1970 when I was 14 years old . This was about my 6th or 7th surgery and my 3 rd orthopedic . I had spinal fusion in 03 and a menisectomy in 2011 .

Surgeries take a lot out of you . Your body goes through a tremendous amount of trauma . The healing process takes a huge amount of energy so you'll be weak for a good while . So don't let it upset you . You'll start feeling better gradually . It's not a hurry up process .

A lot of what you're feeling now may be a result of the anesthesia . Your whole body was put to sleep and it can take a while for everything to wake back up all the way . My appetite still isn't back to
100% and I'm fine with that because I want to lose weight anyway .

You're still doing great . Just keep cool knowing everything will get back to normal in time .

Rick

@1ELISEA My bad, the study I had in mind indicateds that CPM in and of itself doesnt necessarily INCREASE swelling, rather it helps the swelling hang around longer...doesnt improved outcomes, and is an inconvenience at best to patients and caregivers, though, to be fair, it is liked by some. And loathed by some.

First the summary and the PTassociation's take:

then the full article from NIH referenced:

And then the practical aspects as per Duke's protocol:
