[Bonesmart.org] I am titanium!
Really don't think you have anything to worry about as far as your hip is concerned. Just get the tooth taken care of and take your full course of antibiotics.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

Hi calikat So sorry to hear about your dental problems and I understand why you are so concerned but its good news that you are already taking antibiotics for a possible infection which should get rid of it.The sore and swollen mouth may be due to inflammation which may take longer to settle once the infection( if it was infected ) has gone.It seems like we do not need dental clearance any more in the UK before having a hip replacement I had a dental inspection about a month before my op and my dentist told me that there was no evidence to suggest that dental infection was a problem to post op hip patients as if one occurred they are treated with antibiotics,Thinking about you.Let me know how you are.

Hi, calikat ... I think the others have had some reassuring things to tell you. Taking the antibiotics seems wise.
I'm just sorry you have THIS to worry about on top of all else. It's beyond annoying to get the all-clear sign from the dentist prior to surgery and then have this crop up. That's the horrible thing about dental problems: not showing up as they should, to warn us in time. Please try if you can to not fret. Easy for ME to say, I know.

Thank you all for the support. I was going to keep it to myself until I find out anything definitive, but was feeling the need for a bit of support. I think I am feeling discouraged more than anything.

Hi @calikat So sorry to hear about your dental problems, I hope you start feeling better soon. Looks like everyone else has mentioned that you will be ok and you're already on antibiotics and everything should be ok.

I think we all worry so much about getting an infection because we have gone through so much and have worked so hard at getting our new hips and we don't want anything to ruin them or go through any more pain.

We are all here for you and thinking of you.

Feeling amazed and so lucky this morning that things like hip replacements exist in our world. It truly feels like a miracle.

You know it was an old root canaled tooth from 1983! My dentist pulled the post and crown off and recemented everything. He was afraid it might be cracked, but did not see anything so we are hoping for the best. He said there was no infection and that it was just hurting because the post had come loose...localized inflammation as he called it. We shall see. Seems there is never a dull moment as we get older...LOL! Everything starts breaking down! But thanks for asking. I was a little freaked out. :/ I am uber paranoid about any type of infection.

Well that's great there was no infection. Glad you got it all take care of, so no more pain?

Seems there is never a dull moment as we get older...LOL!
I totally agree!!! LOL!

I am uber paranoid about any type of infection.
3 weeks after my surgery, daughter who was taking care of me got sick, with a really bad sinus infection. They thought she might have pheumonia and they also mentioned TB, Turns out just a sever sinus infection....whewwww....

Hi, calikat. I popped over to see how your tooth is doing and I am SO glad to read that update. You are lucky! I have had such bad luck with old crowns and old root canals giving up the ghost and having to to be redone. It's hard enough to face dental work when you aren't worried about a THR infection. So I really felt for you going through all of this. It all sounds good, though, so I hope your mind has been put at rest.

Yes, I agree, this THR surgery is miraculous. It took me a long time to be able to separate the things: You know, be able to recognize how well the surgery went in terms of the prosthesis being implanted and working surely and soundly and giving me a working hip again ... and at the same time, deal with the soft-tissue issues. I had times of being really down in the dumps and grumpy, or both, in the first few weeks/months because I thought I might be one of the lucky ones where everything seemed to fall in place and recovery and progress in a more or less linear time line. And i wasn't one of those. But many of us aren't. Just it's really helpful that you are able praise the prosthesis even though the soft tissue is not yet healed and "all systems go."

How are you doing otherwise? What is the work situation? I am still forum-stupid and don't know how to go back to read earlier pages without losing what I'm writing now, so please forgive me for not remembering your situation clearly. I thought you had said you were being pressured to go back to work. I hope not. I knew from day one I would really have to go back at six weeks, unless something horrible happened post-op, and nothing horrible did happen. So I had the six-week date looming over my soul and it really was a lot of angst I didn't need. I hope that' s not the case with you and that you have some wiggle room with your boss for returning.

Hello Peaches. Thanks for stopping by. I am hoping the tooth holds up, but it is kind of a wait and see. Sometimes the cracks are so tiny, they are difficult to detect. So my dentist and I are hoping for the best. The fact that the root canal is 30 years old causes some concern. ;) As far as the hip replacement. I appreciate what it can do although I still have a lot of pain. Not like before, but if I don't take pain medication, I am fairly miserable. I am hoping it gets better. I found out how miserable I still felt when I tried to cut down on my medication. I am unfortunately not there yet. As far as going back to work. My doctor has me off through Dec. 30th which gives me a full 3 months from the date of surgery. Financially it would be better if I could go back Dec. 1, which would be two months. I am not sure if I will be ready in two weeks especially after this weekend.

I hope u start to feel better soon, I'm sure u will!! Keep at is and hopefully dinner than later you can enjoy your new hip.

Mark

Hello brooktrout. I continue to improve. Yesterday was my 7 week mark. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will need some type of pain medication for a while yet. I am so much better than pre surgery so I am very thankful for that. I no longer have walking envy! LOL I used to watch people walking without thinking about it and I would wish that was me. I can now say I can walk without thinking about it.:egypdance: I even took a little jog across the street to my car. I didn't even realize what I was doing until I did it! I know only my fellow hippies can appreciate the milestone. :D

That is a great milestone!!!!! I am jealous of you, I can't jog because of my left knee replacement. I'm good with walking!
Sorry you are still having pain, where is your pain?

I just hit my 10 week mark, I have no pain but I still have a large lump under my whole scar, it has gone down some, I just hope it goes away.

Hey sunsetbiking! I did not jog for any length of time...just across the street to my car to avoid oncoming traffic...LOL! You know my leg and hip socket get quite achy at night. It wakes me up. Certain movements also hurt when I do my exercises...a lot of range of motion things. I am hoping that it will continue to get better. My PT worked on it today, but over all I am doing pretty well. I am going back to work next month rather than January, but I am going to try and ease back into things. How is work going for you? I find that if I do a lot during the day I am exhausted and have more pain at night. I have to keep reminding myself that I had my femoral head amputated only 7 weeks ago! Not to mention a titanium post pounded into my femur and my acetabulum reamed!:heehee:

Hi calikat! LOL! I would love to be able to jog just a little, I haven't done it in years and my OS said NO after my LTKR.
I'm glad you are doing very well, I'm sure that achy pain will go away eventually. It's so funny how different every recovery is so different.
Good Luck on going back to work, your first day you will be worn out! I have been back to work for 2 weeks now and this week I have been more tired at night than the first week. I think it's more mental stress, 5 days after being back to work I was told I am being laid off on 12/31/13. I'm a bag of mixed emotions right now. 1 minute I'm fine and then I'm super mad and then I just want to break down and cry. I just keep telling myself there is something better out there for me and everything will work out for the best. I'm just mad because I am being let go because I chose my health over working with non-stop pain. I'm so glad I had both of my surgeries and I would do it over again! I tried everything in my power to keep my knee, medication, injections and more injections. After having an injection and it not helping with the pain and the pain consuming me and making me miserable I decided to have my left knee replaced. The whole hip problems came as a complete surprise and I had no idea I had hip dysplasia in both hips. So a little over a year later I was out having another surgery and work was not happy. I had an idea before I went out on sick leave that I might not have a job when I came back. Sometimes it's still hard to believe. I am looking forward to 2014 and being able to walk, ride a bike and just live without that bone on bone pain!!!!
Sorry to ramble on your thread........I wish you the best with your return back to work and I hope everything goes smoothly with your return!! Keep in touch!
