Wow calikat, we have the same goals it seems - right now my main goal is just to feel "human" again too! I'll get to the other stuff in due time....

Regarding my RA, yes, I had to stop my treatment regimen to prepare for surgery. I was having good luck with Remicade, which is a biologic infusion medication administered via IV at a chemotherapy center. It severely suppresses your immune system (to keep the RA in check) which is a huge no-no for surgery, so I had to stop it a good month before surgery.

I also had bilateral torn labrum! I never put 2 and 2 together about it being worsened by the yoga, but my goodness you have a point there -I bet that might have made it far worse! Stretching, "gentle" or not - cannot be good for a labral tear.

I'm so sorry you have been dealt with so much - but I assure you, we WILL feel human again, and once that happens, well then I think our outlook will improve considerably about things we might be able to do again (like yoga, or if not that, something else fun). :egypdance:

Wishing you a wonderful day - and one as pain-free as possible!

You very kind LeoRuby, and you have a great attitude with everything you have gone through. I am very happy that you have found a medicine to help keep the RA in check. I have been checked for several of the autoimmune diseases, but the doctors have found nothing. I am perfectly healthy LOL...except for OA. Here's to feeling human!

Hi Josephine. The NSAIDS are so effective for my pain. My hip almost felt normal yesterday about an hour after taking them, but I know it is not. Not yet at least. I can definitely feel when the NSAIDS wear off.

Hi calikat. Sorry to hear you are having a rough time and am glad the NSAIDs are helping :yay:

I can relate to your story so much having been diagnosed with hip dysplasia earlier this year and having a torn labrum too. I could feel it catching in the joint prior to surgery. I agree with you and LeoRuby that I can now see why pilates wasn't helping a torn labrum!!!!! I found it too hard to even get up the stairs to the pilates class.

I'm looking forward to just walking the dog, walking on sand and living a normal life too

Keep up the good work!!!!!

Thank you Vetgirl. I continue to improve so that is a positive and important thing. I am going to try and avoid the NSAIDS for a while. I was reading that it can actually impede recovery. I see my OS tomorrow for my 4 1/2 week appointment. It was supposed to be 5 weeks, but he had no openings on Thursday. I am supposed to have X-rays taken so I am excited to see. I am also going to ask about what rules I need to follow for the future regarding dental procedures, skin infections etc. it seems there is a lot of conflicting information. So much to think about! LOL. I just want to make sure that I protect my new hip as much as I can!

Yes great idea. I Asked quite a few questions but you could really spend hours couldn't you calikat???

Good luck and be sure to let us in on anything you find out!!!!!

Good luck tomorrow, calikat ... can't believe you are about at that six-week mark. It's a big step, as many restrictions are lifted and that is a huge help in moving forward, not having them over your head. You're right that there are conflicting opinions among the surgeons, so I guess go with what YOURS recommends. I am curious about what you said about NSAIDs impeding recovery from this surgery. But main thing is, I wanted to congratulate you on your progress and hope you "enjoy" tomorrow. I really was happy to have my six-week check-up "check in" and learn that all was going okay. Take care.

You are very welcome, calikat - and I am so glad you do not have an autoimmune disease! Having OA is bad enough, you don't need any more on your plate, that's for sure! I can't wait to hear about your follow up appointment - sending you all my best wishes!

Hay calikat! I have my six week on Wed! I has anterior, not all the restrictions you have. But I am also excited to see the X-ray of my new buddy ;-)

I also want my OS to tell me I can ride a deal bike again! I will go out for a long ride if he says I am good to go ;-)

Best of luck to you and keep us all posted here!

Hi inthebeginning. I had the anterior too, so no restrictions! I have been bending, putting socks on, squatting stretching my hamstrings by touching my toes etc., as much as my hip would allow, since the beginning. My 5 week mark is actually this Thursday, but since they could not find any appointments at my 2 week check I am going early. Hopefully everything is where it should be and the bone has grown in! With your amazing recovery I have no doubts you will be cleared to ride again!

LOL. Vetgirl and inthebeginning and Peaches I am such a knucklehead! My 4 week mark was actually last Thursday. This Thursday will be my 5 week mark. I am getting ahead of myself. I guess I am doing better than I thought. My OS takes the X-rays at the 5 week mark. It is interesting how each doctor is so different.

Peaches I have been reading different threads here that have talked about the pros and cons of NSAIDS. Some members have posted links to articles that I spent some time reading...Z15 is one of the posters that I have been reading. He provides a lot of interesting information. My husband has also cautioned me about using them before I talk to my doctor...so I have decided I should wait. I have become very dependent on their use over the years because of my low back and now what I realize must have been my hip also. :/ I always thought everything was coming from my back.

Well I had my 4 1/2 week OS visit. I got to see my X-ray although I forgot to get a copy. I was too busy asking other questions! LOL. Things looked pretty good on the X-ray...although I do think my hip looks a tad higher. My OS said my legs are even and that my pelvis is just tilted and should even out. I do actually think my leg is a bit longer. I can tell with the length of my pants...about a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. But I am not really bothered. My gait is pretty smooth, and I am certainly not going to ask him to fix it!!!! I asked about infection from teeth cleanings etc. He said for any active infection in the body...kidney, bladder, tooth etc., he would want it to be treated aggressively. He does want me to use antibiotics for the next two years before teeth cleanings. He said there is a lot of controversy, and the risk is small, but not one he wants me to take. Also, no dental procedures unless it is for some type of infection for the next 3 months. I asked "why?" about this, and he explained that it is all about blood flow. There is not much blood flow after surgery, and therefore not much to wash things out...if I am remembering correctly.

Peaches I asked about the NSAID use. He said there has been some study that NSAIDS can impede the growth of bone into the prosthesis, but I should be past that at this point. He gave me a 2 week supply of Celebrex to try out. If I like it, I can call the office and they will give me a prescription. He looked at my thumb joint which is very bad right now. He would like me to wait at least 3 months before having it surgically fixed (me too!). He did give me the go ahead for a cortisone injection into the joint. Now I just have to have the hand surgeon agree. If not I will ask my rheumatologist. I told him I did not think I could take another surgery since I just had two 5 months apart. He agreed and said I should just enjoy the holidays.

We talked about my left hip. He says it looks ok, but not great. It is definitely not normal, but hopefully it will hold out. The dysplasia on the left is not as bad as the right. We discussed stem cell treatment. He said he has not seen it help that much. He had an OS colleague who tried everything for his hips including the stem cell, but he had to eventually have my OS replace both. He also said my right was too far gone for it to have been any help anyway. I think I had figured that out already. ;) I am supposed to see him again in 4 - 6 weeks, but of course he had no appointments left. They finally found one for 7 weeks from tomorrow, but I will be put on a cancellation list.

Well I have written a thesis...LOL...so I will end here.

Vetgirl I wonder why some people have screws put in and some not? I had no screws. All of my components are cementless press fit.

calikat I just read all your threads, so sorry you're still having trouble sleeping. I was doing good for a week and then the past few nights I have been getting up 1 or 2 times. I think it's because I'm anxious about going back to work on Friday. :hissy:  :tantrum:

Glad to hear your OS ok'd for you to get a cortisone injection in your thumb joint. I was taking some ibuprofen for a few days, it seemed to help also. I also stopped because of the same threads you read. I am not suppose to be taking it anyway, because I took so much of it because of OA in my knees, I now have acid reflux and I almost really messed up my stomach and upper bowels.
I took Celebrex when the OA was mild in my knees and it was a wonder drug for me! I loved it, I hope it works for you!

Josephine why is it that one has residual pain after spinal anesthesia? I forgot to tell my OS about it today. As long as I am taking pain medicine I don't notice it, but as I decrease the medicine...wow my back is really sore where they put the needle/catheter thing in my spine. So my hip is better, my mid back is ouch! It seems to be right over the spine and spreads out. When I touch my spine it almost feels bruised. It seems worse than it was, but again, I don't know if that is because I am not taking medicine. I never had pain here pre-surgery and it is definitely where the put the spinal...my third and final one since the first two did not work. I am annoyed because I forgot to ask the doctor about it.

Hi sunsetbiking Nights are still a challenge. I just have a very difficult time staying asleep. My pain level is much better, but I toss and turn continuously. I have decided it is what it is, and my sleep will improve eventually. I wake up feeling anxious too although it is not about returning to work as I still have at least another month. But wow! You are going back soon!

calikat thanks for the update regarding your follow-up - it sounds to me like you have a great OS who is really good at going over issues with you - that's awesome! :)

I'm so sorry about the sleep thing. If it makes you feel any better, after a couple of great nights, last night was a 'FAIL', lol! But I can take it in stride, knowing it's a process. So we're in this together! Hang in there and we'll make it through!

p.s. I have my OS appt to take out the dang icky staples today - yaaaay! :happydance:

LeoRuby I am sure it will feel amazing to have those things gone! I had glue, so nothing to remove, but it seems to have left me with a puckery scar. No more bathing suit modeling for me. ;)
