TKR Hopefaith's Ups and Downs of Recovery

@busylizzie probably my first very traumatic depression was post partum with my first son. I really get this. I have similar flash backs every year around that. It's amazing how your brain/mind made you "wait" until it was safe to feel those feelings. Bless you for what you have felt and gone through and many prayers for the days ahead. truly.....

@cafecortado I am glad you have found this forum too. It is very hard being so isolated. This recovery is just that, isn't it? It's funny how this whole subject has come up because a few weeks before my surgery I started getting very concerned about how the TKR would affect my depression so I googled "depression after a Total Knee replacement." I am so glad you are finding such wonderful support here too. Thank you for your kind words to me.

@ChubbsterPT please take my advice about your pain medication. I made the same mistake at your stage. I cut back on the meds cos I felt ok. I ended up crawling the walls with pain once they were out of my system and it was doubly hard to get back On top of the pain. Be patient. I know it's not nice being on meds but I've had problems and I'm still on Morphine!

You feel ok because the pain meds are making you feel that way still!! Xx

Please be careful

Hi @hopefaith my depression is very much like the others from child birth and it turned to clinical depression. It comes and bites me in the butt every so often!!!! Xxx a bit like an unwelcome acquaintance!

@cafecortado Okay, now you've got to define "Billy No Mates."
Hey you go @hopefaith, I found this in an urban dictionary.....whatever that is?!?

Billy no mates....
British Slang
A person with no friends, or at least someone who appears that way.
Other similar uses:
1) On his bill - On his own
2) Has been billied - Has been abandoned (by friends)
3) A billy - one with no friends
"That Danny lad is a right billy-no-mates."
"Look at that lad over there on his bill."
"David's been billied! Haha!"
"Ryan is a billy..."
....to be honest, I've never heard of number 2 or 3!

@hopefaith, I totally understand what you and the rest are talking about. Depression is now being recognized in most reason years as people weren't taken seriously years ago, and some have ended up hurting themselves or others depending on how the depression is affecting them at the time. Now the medical profession is taking it seriously when someone says they are depressed. Being that you suffered from post partum depression you are in the risk category for depression returning. Also I just noticed you have fibro. People with chronic illnesses as yourself and me as well can have (I have RA anther auto immune disease ) a high risk for depression. Being in pain a lot of the time can lead to depression. I am kept so busy and am surrounded by good friends but I do know that depression can creep in. Today is mothers day. I haven't been feeling well from morning and it could easily be RA acting up, I am overly tired or it could be that today is mother's day and though I have my mom who is 82, my husband passed away 5 years ago and today May 11 on a Sunday we were married on Mother's day so it would have been our anniversary. I am not depressed, but I am anxious. I suffer from anxiety attacks and have since my husband passed away. Depression and anxiety are real and thank goodness people are realizing that it is real. Couple that with the stress of healing from TKE or THR and other illnesses one may have and that alone is enough to go into a depression.

@chestnc I am so sorry about your husband. I cannot imagine that pain. I am also going to acknowledge your anniversary and mothers Day. We all care about you!

I was on Oxycontin, and it was like that my head was wrapped in one giant cotton ball.

That being said, though,

made the same mistake at your stage. I cut back on the meds cos I felt ok. I ended up crawling the walls with pain
This is very true--take those pain meds because you need them, and do not worry about becoming addicted to them. I was worried, and my OS told me not to worry---that I was taking them for a reason and that I would know when I waas truly ready to give them up.

Do not try to get off of them too early, as you are still in pain and you will be miserable.

I don't think I did this right...help. I totally agree that it isn't a great goal to get off pain meds for the sake of getting off pain meds. I sure wish I could but I know I would go into what us hospice nurses call a "pain crises". Takes hours to back track and catch the pain.
