TKR Hopefaith's Ups and Downs of Recovery

I am sorry if I came across harsh yesterday. I just am not in a good place at all right now.

Don't worry. You're among friends here. While we may not understand what you're going through, at least we know you're having a tough go and with you on the journey back.

We are all here for you. Sometimes it helps just to get it out. Better to rant here than kick the cat (not that I would ever do that even if I had one)!

HF, I've been in that 'bad place' more than a dozen times during this process. Very self pitying, resentful and basically just p*ssed off ... at everyone. Including myself. We've all gone through it. Sadly, it seems to be part of the process. Even if we were told that recovery could take a year, I don't think we'd still be able to wrap our heads around the intensity and pain of it all. Speaking only for myself, the pain I was in for the 1st 2 months after surgery is unlike anything I've ever felt before. What I used to call a level 10 pain would barely register on the post TKR surgery pain. It's just a tough, long process and no one that hasn't been through it understands. That's why we've all bonded on here. We know what it's like. We've all been through it. Recoveries are different lengths and different intensities for everyone. Ann & I are slow pokes ~ others are much more lucky. Guess it's just the luck of the draw sometimes. Rant away anytime you feel the need. xoxoxoxo

Ah Hope, hold on to something happy! Your family wedding! This has been so emotionally draining, I don't know if I can do it again...

@hopefaith, I so hear you. My emotions are all over the place at the moment. My consultant talked last week to me of the third day blues. At the moment I have the every day blues. I keep bursting into tears, I wasn't prepared that I would feel so low and yoyo like I am at present. I'm having to take baby steps and not dwell on what is happening to me, I so want a successful outcome. The patients in the beds around me are constantly changing, and here I stay. Its like it is being constantly rubbed in about my slow progress, complications and problems. I am longing for it to pass.
Take care , we shall all overcome these obstacles and challenges and come out on the other side armed to face what life throws at us.

Childbirth? Please...a piece of cake! Us women just know better than to admit it, you guys would have us out mowing the yard the day we got home from the hospital! Oh btw, I had a epidural each time, nothing natural for me, when I realized they don't announce over the intercom " Lisa just delivered a 8# 10 oz with no medication!"

Jeff, maybe you held on a little too tight and she couldn't breathe

@busylizzie I am going to head over to your thread to see how you are. It sounds awful what you are having yo go through. I just feel so bad for you. Many prayers coming your way. :prayer:

If you have a few moments please visit @busylizzie's thread. She is going through something horrendous and needs all of our support big time right now.

I would have to say childbirth was much more intense pain ( I opted for natural all 3 times, with a small dose of Demerol). The difference for me is the duration. Childbirth: I had this beautiful baby, all the happy endorphins set in, I
had a good appetite, no icing, no braces or compression stockings. I got a great night's sleep, no pain meds needed. TKR: This surgery is totally draining! It is almost 11:00 pm. I am tired. I have had two pain pills and two tasty cakes. I am icing my knee. And I am 7.5 weeks post. And if I have a crying spell, my family immediately blames it on the medication. (I take 1-3 per day). : (

@Caloparker Ahh.. I understand. My most intense pain was a few years back when I had a prostate and bladder infection. It was so bad my bladder was completely blocked and when I tried to urinate, it would spasm and I would be screaming at the top of my lungs. The pain was way over the top of anything I would've felt.
With my bilateral, the pain really wasn't bad. The epidural, icing and pain meds went a long way to control it. As long as I didn't worry and take it one step at a time, it was okay and allowed me to recover gracefully. It is a long recovery time. I suppose the difference is that I prepared myself (probably almost too well) for it.
As I began to recover quicker that everyone had thought, I believed they were trying to make me feel better until I began to talk to others at rehab and see that they weren't progressing as fast.
So, still thinking long term, I took these little dips in stride.
I seriously wonder how big a part attitude plays in this.

@JustJeff

First of all it is wonderful having a male supporter like you whom seems to understand our roller coaster rides of crying spells, hateful spells...it doesn't matter, you relate! And I am very thankful for your participation!

Secondly, thank you for always making me laugh out loud! Laughter is so good for the soul!

Lastly, thank you for truly caring, for there is no way that you can hide that in you, it comes naturally!

And yes! Attitude plays a huge part in everything that we go through, So I am going to suck it up, and as Zig Ziglar says . "I need a checkup from the neck up to cure my stinking thinking"

But the other quote really relates " The worst disease of mankind is a hardening iOf the the attitudes!"

Thank you @Quasi for your kind words. We're all in this together. This forum is like a virtual rehab center. I had no idea in the hospital how well or poor I was doing without being able to communicate with my peers. It was only j in rehab that I began to get a sense that my recovery was on track. Bonesmart is that rehab and better, as its more comfortable, they allow pets and the food is hundreds of times better!
I wish I would have found it sooner but better late than never. .nobody except us can really relate to what we're experiencing, so in itself is a big plus. So thanks again for getting in touch. I still don't know how to find out when someone new arrives so I always have to show up late and do a lot of back reading.
