hi Vetgirl , yep have exercises but cant lift my leg of the bed its a dead weight i can move it every other way but up :( i can lift my knee up, but if im lying down and my leg is straight it wont do anything, my hubby has to lift it onto my sponges at night as i just cant do it :( painwise fine but .... :( xx

Hipsy no problems.....I hadn't really thought about it but its probably got to do with the pressure on the joint of the whole leg????? Who knows   :

Vetgirl, your probably right who knows lol , last night was a very bad night for me mega painful :( xx:cry:

Oh that's no good...hope you get some rest tonight!

Vetgirl, i hope so , i suppose its to be expected really as i havent really had any bad pain , dont know why it was so bad last night was still there this morning but im back in oxford today anyway for another xray so will mention to them , but as everyone says 2 steps forward 4 steps back :umm: xx how are you feeling at the moment ? xx

Hi Hipsy Doesn't sound as if you are ready to cut back on your pain meds yet, hope you are still taking them by the clock. Forget what anyone else says and don't think you are being a wuss - only you know what you are feeling!
The dead leg thing - I was told it was because of the epidural, some people take longer to get all nerve function back. The morning that I got out of bed and did not need to lift the leg manually was a milestone (only realised after I had been to the bathroom and woken up!) - it was at least a couple of weeks after the operation.
Don't go mad in Oxford!
Anne

hi Nannyannie, i have been taking meds as i should although being honest have dropped the codeine from 2 to 1 as was having a little trouble in the bathroom situation  it was just so painful during the night for some strange reason , i didn have epidural just a straight forward general , i am 2 weeks out today and not pushing myself to much, its the first time its been that bad i woke up in tears i partly think thats frustration aswell as normally sleep on my front so staying on my back is hard work and alien to me , yes my leg just will not lift up i have to lift it can bend knee fine, but if legs straight it just stays where it is,no matter how hard i try to lift it , i think as im younger i just thought i would find the recovery easier , how wrong was i lol , oh i wont go mad my surgeon is fab and i cant fault him at all , i suppose i just thought i would be further along by now , thanks for your comforting words thou it all helps :):):) xx

My leg also is dead weight as far as trying to lift it straight up.
Hipsy, Sorry you are having pain.
Sleeping on my back is so hard for me. I am awake every 2 hours or so, trying to move. Uncomfortable.

hi ptnanny, ok been to oxord today replacement is seated where it should be so all good , right regarding the leg liting situation all relax its perfectly normal , due to the muscles being cut and moved around it will take time to be able to straight leg lift apparently , what they suggested to help it along either get a leg lifter to lift the leg, or use a rolled up towel to exercise it with , its a matter of patience it will take time , so feeling happier again :happydance:i just hope i have a decent night tonight , i saw my replacement on x ray they showed me it was strange to see it but interesting to , they found all the balls that were also shot into my hip they are everywhere , next x ray in 2 months to see what movement has taken place x:yay:

Hipsy I just got caught up on your thread. Lovely horse you have there. I have 3 horses.....and I'm planning on being back in the saddle by December 1, which will be about 3 1/2 months from my surgery. I'm hoping it's sooner, but I wanted to set a realistic date so I wasn't disappointed.

I'm at 5 weeks today, and I can honestly say this is the first week I've felt almost normal. I can lift my leg (the dead weight issue is gone) and the pain is minimal. I'm not on any pain meds, but do take Ibuprofen twice a day for the possible inflammation.

Hang in there, it does get better, day by day. Take every little bit of improvement as a miracle! WE will be riding again, and will have to share our riding experiences once we're all back in the saddle. :happydance:

hi@jojool , thanks for getting in touch, 3 wow what breeds do you have ? i think 3 months is very realistic for getting in the saddle again , im glad you are out of pain and feeling normal again i cant wait for that :happydance:it seems like forever away for me although its only 3 weeks away im 2 weeks today , did u have a anterior or posterior approach i ask as your in america and i understand its common practice over there for anteriors :) mine was posterior and with the restrictions 6 weeks sleeping on my back its like a nightmare as im a front sleeper , i suppose we all go through the ups and downs after a thr , im sure it will all be worth it , looking forward to the day i can even contemplate putting my leg over a saddle take care and i will be keeping a eye on your posts :) xx

I have 2 Morgans and a Quarter Horse.

I got out this past weekend on the trail, on our side-by-side ATV. Made me want to ride the horses all that much more! But, even though we were on a machine on the trail, it was awesome just to get outside and get some sunshine and enjoy some time with my honey.

You will feel better every day. There are ups and down during recovery (today is a down day, I'm sore and discouraged):groan:but I do know that tomorrow is another day and I will be okay. At least that bone on bone pain is GONE.

I look forward to hearing more about your horse! How many do you have???

Hipsy hi there you are not alone in Oxford! Glad everything is in order, sounds like its been a difficult time, but now all confirmed normal you can really concentrate on getting better and have that goal of riding your horse again soon. Good luck

hi Jojool, he,s a new forest i had him from11months old to the age of 7 , alas i have had to rehome him as he is young and a worker and with the replacement coming up i knew it wasnt fair on him to just be a field trophy , he is a show pony and has had many wins in the ring with me , it broke my heart and i still miss him terribly but it was the right thing to do for him as he was worth so much more , he has now gone on to become a pony club pony with a lovey girl and is loving doing cross country which i couldnt do with him so im happy for him but sad for myself  as i had him from a baby but im also very proud of him and what he has acheived :), i am missing the horsey life but have many offers to help people with starting their youngsters so once back on my feet will be getting stuck right in there , im still in touch with boysie so thats something anyway , i love the morgans their such a noble breed , also love the quarter horses they can turn on a sixpence cant they , had a better night last night so im happy about that , and its good to hear your getting out and about a little in the sun , cant say i will be doing that the sun is far and few between in good old england lol although we have had a good summer this yr or shall i say a better summer lol , i am always willing to talk horses and yard work so keep in touch ok :happydance: xx
