TKR Here she comes just a walkin' down the street

I am glad you are safely home and all is going well, and that all is taken care of so you don't have to worry about your parents and can just rest and take care of yourself.

So nice that you are finally home and your parents are in a safe place! Now...recovery! Hope all goes well!

Having someone on standby for the first shower or two is a great idea. Congratulations on being home.

To be on the safe side, I'd have your helper stand in the bathroom while you shower. You won't believe how much it takes out of you and you will probably need help getting out and dried off.

I agree with sistesinhim, I still remember the first shower, it felt so good but got very tired afterward. If you can put a banch in the shower, so you cant sit if you need to.:bath:

I do have a big shower stool with a rotating seat, which worked perfectly. Re my helper, while we share a house, it's a friendship thing, not a romantic thing. So the idea of him standing there helping me while I'm naked in the shower is not on the table! But shower is over and went fine.

Oh good about your shower. How did it feel? As if I need to ask!!

I'm glad you have made it safely home and even were able to have your first shower today. I remember my first showers would wear me out so much I had to sleep immediately afterwards for at least about hour.

I have a question regarding the energy drain people post about. Ever since coming out of surgery, I felt pretty good, pretty alert, able to throw myself into anything you can do lying flat on your back with your knee propped up. In other words, reading, watching TV, carrying out complicated telephone conversations. The travels over the past two days made my leg feel stiff and sore, but didn't wear me out at all energy wise. So I'm wondering, is that the difference between general and spinal? I had the spinal, and have never felt any sort of brain fog. Now when I take the pain pills, I eventually feel a wash of sleepiness and drowse off. But that's different than overall not feeling alert and energetic. After the shower today, I felt fine, energy wise. And since I'm a very heavy 60-year-old, I don't have any pretensions to having to come into this with the best of health. So I Suspect it must have to do with the anesthetic. Either that or the kind of medications the doctors put us on afterwards. I do Norco's, and that's the strongest drug I've been given. Anyway, it's interesting. But the discomfort, swelling and tightness were inevitable.

I didn't have general anaesthetic and I still had major energy drain. I would fall asleep mid post. I also would fall asleep watching TV and have to re watch the same episodes more than once. A shower would cause me to need a two hour nap.

Oh yeah, I had and still have at times the energy drain. It's not nearly as bad as it was for the first month or so, thank goodness! But, it is there.

I went through the same thing as newlybionic and ine I had MUA It lasted longer but at some point it got better

Yes I had energy drain, still do to some extent or maybe I just allow myself to acknowledge it. I had spinal and heavy post op pain meds for a long time.

The energy drain is nothing to o with what sort of anaesthetic you have had.
It's the result of most of your body's energy being directed towards healing your knee.

@greatlakes - If you're not experiencing the energy drain, you are one of the lucky few. Don't let that lead you astray, into doing too much, will you?

Count your blessings...I have some of my energy back, and feel much better, but it doesn't take much to tire me out, specially at the end of a work week.

I had general, and don't really have energy drain per se. I mean I dont really do anything but rest. But when I do try to do anything, walk around, make a snack, do some work in my home office, I dont really feel extra tired. Im more bored than tired so some days I take a nap around 4pm. Also I've had good sleep just about every night in my bed. The energy drain also may be connected to lack of good sleep too. Oh and I am very heavy & 66 years old, but I manage pretty well. At first I was taking oxy 7.5/325 two at a time every 4 hours, and that give me some brain fog and messed up my stomach, so after the first week I switched to extra strength tylenon/tramadol.

Glad your shower went well. How are you feeling overall now that you are home?

Keep healing!

Guess the constipation trolls were so thick around me that the energy drain trolls decided to look for an easier target. Heck no re doing too much, the rest of it, the pain, swelling, tightness, aching, discomfort are all still present and accounted for, the only advantage I suppose is that while lying on my back with a leg stuck up into the air im able to read. Plus the normal energy made the two travel days much easier. Today I am going for a very short drive to my parents' place to hang out in my father's recliner for the day since he's not there. I don't have a recliner and have long since quit being able to find a comfortable position in a darn bed. No steps either at my place or theirs, and a friend will drive me and get me settled in for several hours once there. Hope all of you are having relatively good days!

@greatlakes hope you enjoyed your trip to yours dad's and the use of his recliner, getting out is great for a person's spirits. Energy drain, looking back I don't think I really felt like I had much in the beginning, I was always trying to do something each day it seemed, but maybe I didn't notice it as I may have cleaned the bathroom, or vac, but that was it for the day in the beginning I loved that afternoon nap and I didn't sleep thru the night most nights I would get up and watch t.v for a hr or 2. I actually think now when I feel that I need to keep up and get a certain amount done I feel more of that energy drain now then I did in the beginning. When I do feel it, it's best just to take a nap and regenerate. @dianehelen I agree more with you that I also felt bored, very bored at times. I think I really experienced the brain fog as I just couldn't concentrate on reading a book, or adult coloring or putting a puzzle together, it's only been about the last 5-6 wks that I was able to start reading again and concentrating. Thought all these little activities would occupy my time and keep me from being bored, but the only thing I got much out of at that time was watching t.v.
