TKR Had a difficult time, feeling better<

I look forward to the morning when my first awake thought is not my knee. Of course, I don't want something else hurting to be my first thought, either.

A question....a new symptom. When I lie down at night, or even just stretched out in the evening watching TV I have been getting sensations n the previously numb part of my kneecap which feel like a drill pounding a nail into my knee. It's different than the lightning strikes that I've felt n and off throughout my leg...these are so intense.they don't last long but they hurt and make me yell. I know my OS said the nerves n the kneecap will be regenerating (and will likely leave one numb area) but is this how t feels. It is me strange sensation. It goes on periodically , but then stops. It doesn't wake me up. My kneecap also feels itchy.
Has anyone else felt this?
On the plus side, I'm increasing stairs with just a little pain in my quad, and increasing my walking distance. With the increase in walking I've noticed that my back hurts, not my knee. I think others have mentioned this, as well? I am supposing that as my knee was straightened from a valgus shape it is throwing my body mechanics off. I do have shoes that I bought for after surgery, so it's not from worn shoes.
Weather has finally turned somewhat summery and very sunny, so going out for daily walks feels good. I live in a very pedestrian friendly little town with plenty of benches everywhere, so I can rest, if needed. Just sitting down for a few minutes helps me to walk further and longer.
It's so nice to feel progress at last.

As you start getting more active and further along n your recovery you will feel different types of aches and pains. These are normal. As far as your back I know for me that's where I had a lot of problems. You said you have new shoes but since your leg is now straight you may need some extra help with the fit. I wear sneakers for work and almost everywhere else so I went to a store that caters to runners. They were able to measure my foot, examine how my foot was hitting the ground ( I was tending to turn my ankle in ) and then watch me walk around in them. I was offered several pairs to try. They cost me a little more but they did help. Others have had new/replaced orthotics. I also thought part of my problem was related to de-conditioning too.

I'm so glad you're getting out for walks on your beautiful island. Sorry to hear about the new pains and aches. I'm sure (and hope!) that the back will feel better once you get used to walking properly and gain some strength.

@LoveGiants I think my back has to just adjust to the new normal.
:hiking:
It is so nice to be out among the flowers that are everywhere here.

@newlybionic your running store sounds like a store from paradise! They actually help you? Measure you, fit you, watch you walk and make intelligent observations.? I'm going to have to travel there? I can't think of a store here not populated by know nothing salespeople. But, as an experiment, think I'll try to check some out and see what they can do.
I did buy a very expensive pair of runners wbout a year ago. Wonder how they'd feel now. Well, first thing first. For now walking is good...gonna rain by Sunday.

@mamazipp imho I think everything in our bodies will be adjusting and finding our new normal. I saw my OS yesterday (it's now 2am Tuesday ) and he said its 1-2 years for a complete recovery. So, there's a lot of time to discover the miracle of healing in our bodies!

@TML I do think our bodies do heal and adjust over time. It's interesting to see the process. Every day is a new adventure. I trust your OS is pleased with your progress.

@mamazipp - We have stores like that here, too, that focus on customer service for runners and walkers. They look at your gait, how your foot strikes the ground, and try many shoes based on their observations. I took my daughter there when she started running. Maybe you can find such a store in Vancouver or Seattle, when you go. Good luck!

I hope your back is feeling better today.

I agree. With these new knees, we are walking differently and thus other areas are experiencing new pains.

I've been out and about doing all the normal things again. The choral singing is a challenge due to having to sit and stand and sit and stand while rehearsing. The concert will be a bit of a challenge, but still, I have so much more energy and can walk without a cane ( sometimes a little wobbly) and feel excited about freedom.

Today I did a whole bunch of errands and then headed out to the weekly evening street market. Between buying more fresh veggies than I'd planned, (corn is heavy) and then walking a few blocks to the drug store and supermarket, I found myself carrying more than I had planned and didn't think I could make it home...I had walked, not driven. My feet were killing me, my TKR ankle was swollen and my knee was NOT happy. I started icing but realized that I needed an Oxycodone also. I rarely take them now but boy did I need it. I'll probably sleep with the ice machine also. Needless to say I had no energy to prepare and eat any of the fresh produce I bought. The corn on the cob will have to wait. But I did grab some absolutely sweet and juicy local strawberries and sweet local blueberries, from our nearby farms, to combine with my fresh buffalo yogurt, before I collapsed in my chair.

The good thing is that I know it's just a blip from the ODIC. I'll likely be fine tomorrow, and there are so many good days now. Whew! It's been a long haul. Still hard to get up from a chair without grimacing and pain and with grace. I look like Lily Tomlim playing the Tasteful lady......from Laugh-In. Dating myself, for sure.

The ice feels sooo good.

I'm sorry you overdid it, it's so easily done when you just want to get back to doing normal things, but hopefully it won't take too long to recover, and you will have those lovely fresh fruits and veggies to look forward to. Take it easy today. Perhaps you should call your knee Lily!

@Tabbycat

Lily. I like that name. My knee, Lily. Thanks.

Love your new avatar. Is that Max? Very pretty kitty.

I am icing like crazy and can't wait for tomorrow's salad with my first of the season corn on the cob.

@mamazipp
I've got Minnie too, they are brother and sister. She's sweet and sensitive, and has a very musical purr!

Oh my goodness. What a beauty! I love his coloring and his eyes.
Do you have a photo of Minnie, too?
