TKR Getting somewhere at last!

Not posted on my own page for a long time.
Just back from 11 days in the Portuguese Algarve. Weather wasn't brilliant the first week, worst week in June for 40 years, but improved. My knee gave me little or no problems...walked up and down cobbled streets , uphill and down, round old castles and along the beach. The waves were huge so was a bit wary of the sea on my own in case I was knocked off my feet, but swam in the pool with no bother.
And , yes Josephine, I hardly noticed it wasn't my knee! Only a couple of times getting on and off a high coach step did I think..ouch! I sometimes caught myself doing the 'up with the good, down with the bad' unconsciously and tried not to do it. All in all life is good as far as TKR is concerned and it took me a while to get here!

That is such a wonderful posting, Becky.
That thing with coach, (and bus) steps is the only thing that still catches me too.
Also that "up with the good, down with the bad" thing is such a hard habit to break when you have been doing it a long time.
My only real problem, is coming down steps.
How much of that is weakness in the operated leg, and how much sheer lack of confidence, I don't know.
When you think what we were like last year, we have come such a long way.
Glad to hear that you had such a good holiday, despite the weather.

Jess, at 14 months post-TKR I sometimes find myself wondering which leg to go up and down on first. It seems to be an inconsistent decision these days, but I still think about it and have my hand on the rail -- particularly going down stairs. Sometimes going up the stairs I'm more comfortable -- depending on how many steps are involved, and if they're deep steps. :umm:

Yes, a great positive posts, Nancy. Congratulations, me dear :martini: And good to hear you had a good time in Portugal :yes!:

Nancy, I'm getting hopeful again too. Here's my news: I had pretty much given up that my leg was going to be pain free. Then I finally went back to my original surgeon, and his PA told me I had severe tendonitis and needed more PT. I switched my GP so I could see the physical therapist I wanted to see all along (and insurance would cover it). Should have done that a year and a half ago. She is amazing and I am already improving. I am amazed at how much better I feel after two weeks of this new PT. Finally someone who gets this kind of recovery, explains everything clearly and is convinced I can deal with it. I am so happy.

Great news Jane! What a difference in the treatment from area to area never mind country to country! I think having my legs massaged helped .....and it felt good! I walked easier when I left the room than when I went in. I still have a massage every couple of months, my treat to myself!

Nancy, I've been getting massage as well. Every other week. This woman is amazing. Not simply doing body work, but helping me think about things differently. But the PT has shifted things enormously. I really do think this will change. YES.

Hi Nancy I have just spent time reading your thread from the beginning. I read your 15mth story in 30 mins. It really is a story of rags to riches. All that time, with all the pain and worry But it has paid off. You GOT THERE. It gave me real hope.

In a message dated 15 August 2012 you mentioned a phone app to measure ROM. Can't imagine how this works. Could you tell me more. Carol

patient 99 Hi Carol. I got the phone app and with mine you have to put your phone on the bend of the knee and it is supposed to give you a reading. Waste of time. It was a different reading every single time even if I did it straight away. I then purchased a goniometer !!!! spelling not sure. That is more reliable but it is better if someone does the reading for you. I was measuring my own and when hubby did it his reading was much less. Im sure this happened to KathyH too. I think you can be too obsessed with ROMS. just keep exercising and don't be like me measuring every (sometimes twice) a day. It can make you miserable. Like you I was measuring lying down on the bed but in my last few physio visits she was measuring me sitting down. Hope this helps

Carol, I posted my reply to you on my site. "Turning a Corner Toward Recovery." I'm going to post some photos tomorrow. Maybe they'll give you an idea. Remember though, I'm as far from surgery as Nancy is. We are TKR twins who had our knees replace on the same day and have shared some of the same ups and downs, encouraging each other along the way. I think my story, while not quite as constant in terms of improvement as Nancy's has been, should give people heart. I am improving and I feel like I am finally getting the mobility and life I had hoped I'd get.

Well, I took a trip to Edinburgh today hoping to meet up with KathyH but we didn't manage to hook up :boohoo: :boohoo:
Have a great trip Kathy, lots of steps as I remember on the ghost tour

Found my own thread! Been ages but knee just keeps improving. New knee still feels hot at times and sometimes 'tight'.
I still feel it clicking at times and others am scarcely aware of it.

I'm approaching my second anniversary of my bilat. My knees still get tight at times (like today) don't have any hotspots but I too have clicking from time to time, no rhyme or reason why, but the best part, NO pain of any kind. The other day I dropped down 4 ft from the top of our boat to our boat lift, my husband groaned loudly, I started laughing, didn't feel a thing! It's an adventure, best of luck!!

Knee aching today. Combination of first day at work after holidays and absolutely freezing temps? I don't know ....but I'll be wearing tights/trousers instead of bare legs

Feel better, Nancy. Did warm clothes help? Oh, and does you knee still wake you at times? Mine does. And I have to turn and sometimes can't get back to sleep. Other nights, I turn and am fine.

There seems to be no reason for niggles. Yes, Jane, sometimes wakes me when I turn and this last week have had excruciating cramp waking me, maybe that's why it's aching.......
