TKR From Difficult Moment to Some Positive Moments

It really does hurt when family and people we really care about just don't get it. We just have to forgive and try to forget.

Sure am sorry about your negative workplace. Place I worked for 22 years was that way for a number of years until top management was changed---but there were a number of us there that always looked out for each other so that helped a lot.

Karen, this too shall pass. You take care, keep us posted. 'Cause you know we care.

I am just so glad I have this community to come to, because gosh knows, you all get it. I did bring the cane to work:) And I asked people to help carry my bag in and out. I also got from CVS nude colored TED's, and an ace bandage to put around my knee. I gotta say, that helped a lot today. Granted I felt like a sausage in a casing all day under my suit, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. So I am going to wear the stockings for the next couple of weeks.
Yes, it is unfortunate when people, esp. loved ones, expect immediate recovery. I still can't believe my ex husband broke his elbow and has surgery Thursday, this is NOT how I planned me returning to work...Life.....

Hope you elevated and iced a while when you got home. The stockings was a good idea. Just take it as easy as you can.

Life.....just keeps happening!

Take care of yourself, keep us posted. We care.

It is SO true- no one can possibly understand how difficult this recovery is. I am so glad to have this forum and a couple of people in my department at work who had TKAs. I go back June 21 : (
Good luck, Karen!

Karen, hang in there! This community is definitely a godsend, and it would be dreadfully difficult without the support of people who truly get it. One step at a time, one day at a time we are going to make it through. I am glad to hear that you took your cane to work and asked for help. Keep up the good work.

Jamie, I loved your cane comments! :hysterical: you sure put a smile on my face.

Hey All,
As always thank you for your support. Returning back to my real life, has been no easy task. Another thing I did not anticipate being this hard. First one I did not anticipate being so difficult was the past three months. Yeah no kidding, you cannot understand this experience unless you have been there. I try to rest and ice as much as possible but by the swelling and clamp around my knee disappear soon I might lose it, lol.

Saturday I have long standing tickets to see the Queen concert with my son up in CT, which is a two hour drive. He is ssssooo psyched to go I have to suck it up and manage somehow. We are staying over night. He is 14 and LOVES Queen, which was my favorite band growing up. Four months ago I thought I would be coasting by now.....:hissyfit:

Well, Karen, try to make the best of it---at least you should enjoy the music---maybe get so wrapped up in it for a while that you'll forget that knee for a bit.

But tough as it's been---you're making it. And some things must be better than before TKR.

Take care, keep us posted. We care.

Thanks. I think that is why I am in a funky place at the moment, because I feel worse now than I did before the replacement. I pray I will be glad I got the replacement. I really thought I was in so much pain before that it was a no brainer to get the surgery. This was a rude awakening, I am like oh no, I am worse! But my saving grace is one I am done healing I have my life back. Before, I could not hike, bike, or do much. It is scary to wonder if the surgery will be successful.

On a lighter note, I think the concert will be awesome, just to watch my teenage son have fun.

Sounds like you're having a very trying time Karen. Hope the concert raises your spirits.

I'm finding similar attitudes to TKR recovery among my friends (thankfully, I'm retired). Even had an email 40hours post surgery asking me to walk 12 blocks to join someone for an early breakfast the next morning. He was shocked when I turned him down, after all, it's all done as an outpatient these days, he said.

I've found sharing a few details about hearing the power saw and feeling/hearing the hammering usually helps to put things in perspective!

Hi, The surgeon said after this last script runs out no more prescriptions. That is two weeks from now. So I guess at that point if my knee is still yowling I will go see him. As of now, advil does nothing.
I think the concert is a huge stretch for me, but my son is patient and could care less if we stop every 45 minutes so mom can stretch, or we relax at the hotel for an hour before we go out. I am sure I will be wrecked on Sunday.
It is Friday night, just dropped my son at his 8th grade dance (the kids look so old, omg) and I am laying in bed icing. I am wrecked. But it is what it is. You guys get it......

Karen, Advil is just another name for ibuprofen which is more of an anti-inflammatory than a pain killer. Extra strength Tylenol (500mg) works much better for pain; and a combination of the two works best. So unless you can't take Tylenol, the BoneSmart cocktail might serve you better.

I will try it. My surgeon wasn't thrilled about heavy tylenol use. Most of me so glad I am mobile, but I had no idea it would still hurt this much. I know, be patient.....but no wonder I am exhausted....up at 6:00 a.m. worked until 3:30 took son for haircut, dinner, to the dance, and drove his friends home. It is after 11, and I am drooling.....

I guess I thought I would realistically ease back into work and routine, not after 3.5 months be thrown off a bridge with bricks tied to my feet....
Ok, I am done venting....

Karen, for what it's worth I went through a period like that at about the same stage. You are probably exhausted and it's hard to think straight. I do hope you enjoy the concert and the time with your son. I can tell you that now I am so pleased I had the surgery and every day i see improvement but it is still a worry. Not only are our knees all different but we all handle things differently. Your path isn't easy but hopefully it will take you where you want to be when the timing is right for you.

When I returned to the classroom at eight weeks, I was very, very excited. When I returned home that evening, I couldn't believe how exhausted I was! I was going to PT twice a week and then I would go to the gym on Saturday AM's for the stationary bike and gentle stretching with exer-bands---I was wiped out.

One thing that I did do was to reserve Sundays after church for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I iced, elevated, and rested the entire day.

It will get better---all in due time---I learned how to be tremendously patient---and yo will also arrive at your destination. Your energy levels will slowly rise during the ensuing weeks---maybe not noticeably or quickly, but you will feel better!

I hope you're getting in some rest this weekend, Karen.

Hey all,
So if anyone is a Queen fan, this show was AMAZING!!! And I made it through without passing out in pain. I drove two hours each way, went out to dinner and the concert, drove home today. I won't lie, my knee swelled up 3x its size and I am paying for it now, but I am so glad I went with my son. He was beyond ecstatic, and I had a blast. He got autographs, pics, etc.
I am finding that the TED's are back out and on my leg, the tight compression really helps a lot, coupled with an athletic knee brace. After 6 hours my knee is swelling out of the brace, but it does help the pain. I am so over being a fashion queen, and all about what helps knee pain now.
More to follow....

Re: Three Weeks Post Recovery - I had NO idea that....

unsure if hereditary or not,my sister is same as me having her lkr next year ,she is older than me had mine in may.Doctors also say because i was a coal miner always neeling ,but nearly all family miners only one knee trouble so maybe not mom fault
