Last couple of days I have a new pain when walking. It is in the biceps femoris hamstring (according to the chart I looked at). It is the muscle you can feel on the back of the leg on the lateral (outside) part. It is about 4 inches above the crease in the back of the knee. Has anyone else had that and how long did it last? It's not too painful, but sore and only when I walk.

I think I had every muscle from below the hip to my foot hurt at one time or another.

That one was hurting me last night. I think I pulled up going up a long flight of stairs fast. Silly me. It is fine now. Different muscles all hurt at different times. I like to think that they are just getting stronger with use.

Hey, Amy Jo, I'll bet that is why my muscle was hurting. I've been doing steps up and down and a few backwards rotations on the recumbent bike. I also have discomfort on the medial side of my patella that seems to have been there on and off ever since surgery. It is what bothers me if I try to lie on my side, although I can lie on my side longer now than I could a few days ago - almost long enough to fall asleep. By the time I can sleep on my side I'll be having the next surgery.

I still feel twinges when I switch sides when sleeping. It's good that you will be able to sleep on your side before the next surgery. Remember at first you will just want to lie on your back. Like others have said I admire your courage at going for #2 so soon.

My right knee, to be operated on the 26th is just about as painful when walking as the left knee. Sometimes when I wake up at night in pain, it is the right knee that's doing it. For those reasons, it's not all that difficult a decision. I'm hoping to be in pretty good shape by 2017. Back to bowling and going places I want to go and be able to walk around and enjoy life a bit more.

There is no reason why 2017 can't be a great year for you, you are doing amazing with your recovery now!!!

Just made a trip to the library. After I got out of the car and put weight on my right leg, it buckled a little and a woman came running to help me afraid I was going to fall. My new knee does not buckle like that.

I remember that buckling. That was the symptom that made my decision to have the surgery.

Same here with the buckling. I'm scared to death my "old" knee is going to make me fall on the new one. It does make the decision easier.

I still have some buckling with new knee. That's why I usually have my cane with me. Now my opposite ankle has started buckling! Neverending circle! At pt they called me the ballerina when my knee would buckle, and my arms would go straight up to balance myself! Must've been quite a site to those watching! I did have a teenager ask me if I was okay. She couldn't get up to help, but I think she wanted to.

Day 28 - week 4. Progress so far I guess has been good. I am able to walk with no assistance, even to go out, although I do confiscate a scooter when I go grocery shopping. The last few days though, my knee feels stiffer and a little more sore, which is interesting because I know my ROM is improving as I can now go both ways with the pedals on my recumbent bike with no discomfort.

My unoperated right knee is bothering me more and more and it is very close to being as troublesome as the new knee. Its ROM is better, but probably as sore when walking. I guess I'll be ready for the new right knee in 2 weeks from today. The pain I'm having in the new knee is very mild and actually more of a discomfort - a level 1 probably. It is intermittent, not constant. Sometimes if I'm sitting in my recliner I completely forget my new knee. I am able to lie on my right side a little longer each day. Last night I actually dozed off that way, but woke right up.

I'm doing very little in the way of exercise. I go up and down 3 steps several times a day, do heel slides when I think about it, and various exercises that the PT showed me, but only 1 at a time, and very sporadically and mostly to keep tabs on my progress. It's hard to say what my ROM is but I'd say close to 100/5, but it hurts if I keep my knee flexed past about 80 degrees for any length of time.

You'll doing this recovery very smartly! Less is more.

Oh the joy of side-lying! :)

You sound great -- proof that the "less is more" works!

Another milestone - Last night I slept part of the night on my left side. So nice to get off my back. Still cannot do the right side comfortably. This morning when I got up I walked "normally" without thinking about it. My swelling is at the mild range except for a couple of bumps that I think are small hematomas that are slowly resolving. I still have that stiff/sore feeling with flexion, but I guess that's no surprise, is it? I'm guessing flexion is between 100 and 110.

Yippee! Getting off the back is a huge step! I sleep on my sides now, but still have to use a pillow between my knees most of the time. But, who cares? I'm off my back!
