Rich, I'm glad the MRI didn't show anything, but I wish you had a definitive answer. Hope the easing of the pain continues....

double the dose would be twice a s good - NOT!
no! :-(

LOL!

Saw my NEW OS today. Even after lots of painful PT I still have "medflexion laxity". I was told that a revision is the only fix - it's my choice. UGH!
Been getting some pain in that joint - guess it's fluid build up. Does that make sense?

@Jamie - I was told that you may know some good revisionists. I'm considering it...
If you could suggest someone I'd really appreciate it.
I live in the Philadelphia area.

thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich im not much good with the nerve problem. However i did have lax lateral ligament after my TKR. I knew at 3 months post op something was wrong. Had horrible pain up the back of my leg and a burning pain in the knee whilst bending. Swelling never resolved and i had a max rom of 110. At 43 i felt like i had disabled myself after this op. The surgeon mentioned the laxity when i complained at 3 months out with 70 rom and said it would tighten up. Now i know that cannot happen. I kept hoping it would get better but 5 mins of walking left me in so much pain. 1 year post op i had a second opinion and the knee was slipping out of its joint at times. The surgeon said either live with it until i no longer can or have a revision to a rotating hinged joint. I am currently 5 weeks post op from the revision and its a totally different experience. The recovery last time never really happened. I am doing great so far. Already hitting 100 rom and my knee is half the size it was pre revision. Sorry for waffling. I know a revision is a hard choice to make and there were times i seriously thought of backing out.

chereb,

one of the things about my laxity is that, since I have such a gap in my knee, my ROM has always been good. 120 out of operation and now almost 140! getting to zero was tough though..
glad you're doing better now!!

I was told that a revision is the only fix

Hi Rich, Oh no, not the `R' word. Can't tell you how sorry I am that you are having to consider a revision. I know its childish, but I get so angry with surgeons sometimes. Nobody says `Sorry'. Nobody says `It was my fault'. Its just `oh yes, the only option is revision, your call'. I guess if the pain is bad enough it makes the decision easier. Where does it leave you re insurance and your job?

Rich have any of the doctors you've seen explained why this laxity has occurred. I tend to operate on the basis that its important to know why something went wrong, otherwise what's to stop it happening again.

It small consolation, but the vast majority of people who have undergone a revision seem to get a good outcome. Keep me posted.

Well - I know I've been away for a while - but it's been a busy summer.

I go into surgery net week - September 15th - to replace the poly spacer - a "poly swap".

Very nervous!!!! Wish me luck bonesmarties!!!!

:-)

Rich, I just read your last post---it is so funny because that is what happened to me and I was going to suggest it to you. I had my spacer replaced due to laxity. In my case my OS admitted that it was too lax. He said that it is always subjective when in the OR and choosing a spacer.

After my surgery, it was amazing. The first time I stood on it, I knew that it was so much more stable!!! I stayed in the hospital for one night and had about a week or so of pain. By the end of the week, I could see that things were much better!!!

I would never have a femoral nerve block---I think they are necessary since you can block the pain with oral pain meds. Especially after reading Camper Van's story!!! I hope your surgery goes well, I think you will be happy you did it. here is an article for you not he proper way to elevate!!!!!

Elevating your leg to control swelling and pain
Using ice

Rich I sure hope this does the trick! So sorry you have to go through all of this! Could you check on the "pre-op" side? Someone was asking the other day about a surgeon/hospital that I believe was your original surgeon. She was wondering if anyone had used him. The name seemed awfully familiar and I was thinking t was your surgeon.

Well,
@skigirl Is correct! It's the day after my operation and already I'm not in Anywhere near as much pain.
Doc used the orthosense system for My new spacer and there isn't and instability in my knee from laxity I suppose. It still feelS a bit unstable but, its really too soon to tell. MY leg length dIs repent is still an issue

But, So far it...it's not too bad.
Thanks evEryone. EsPeciaLly My bud @Lovestoread

Rich, I'm glad to hear you're not in as much pain. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you are finally on the road to recovery! Sorry you had to go through all of this. You did go to a different surgeon this time, didn't you? Hang in there, my friend!

Glad everything went well Rich! I hope this finds you some much needed relief... Hang in there

Oh, Rich! My goodness...you've been through so much. For some reason I didn't see your tag from months ago asking about help with a revision surgeon. I'm so glad you were able to find someone who could properly diagnose and help you. If you'd like to share some information about who you selected and how things went, I'd appreciate knowing another good revision doctor.

I'm thrilled to hear things are going well so far. Here's to finally getting to this point!!! Now, let's get the real recovery going!!

thanks for all the well wishes everyone. I'm doing well! Still have some pain (this time the doc DID cut into the quad tendon) but otherwise - I'm recovering much better than the TKR! I have a much larger scar and this doc used staples not skin glue. So it looks a bit like Frankenstein's monster down there - but that's ok with me!

The only "instability", if we want to call it that, I'm having now is a bit on forward slipping on full extension. PT tells me this is either due to weak quad muscles from surgery and/or some swelling. The swelling is minimal compared to TKR - eh! 'tis nothing! I don't think I'm recovering quite as fast as @skigirl but I'm doing well. I have a nurse and a PT guy coming to my house for this week and next and I'm teleworking!

My band has a gig this Saturday afternoon which I'm going to hopefully make. I have people to help carry and set up my equipment (not real roadies, just friends) and I'm bringing a chair. I may have to play mostly sitting down but - as long as I get to play - I'm good!!! Can't wait! We played out four days before my surgery and had a blast! It was still hard to stand and my knee was sore but - the show must go on! :-)

Leg length will be the next hurdle. About an inch difference still and I have to wear my special shoes with the right side raised an inch ugh! I suppose the only thing to correct that is.... dare I say it.... get the other knee done. YIKES!

Anyway - doing well guys! Thanks everyone!!!!

Rich

Great to hear that you're making good progress, @rah2435 .

Don't overdo it with the band!

Be really careful with the band---the result of over activity is horrendous pain!!! I only had to experience it once ---it made quite an impression on me.

If you can do it---wear long pants and wear compression hose during the playing. It will really help with the swelling!! I am glad you are doing so well.

So glad to read your good report Rich! Remember to take it easy.....
