TKR Feeling my new knee<

@Josephine Thank you for reassuring me and I sure will take my meds as prescribed.

@tigz I will keep in touch, but there is no Internet in the hospital so I will post all when I come back home.

I am back from hospital for a MUA and I had a femoral block for 3 days. Didn't sleep at all while in hospital and since I came back home Friday night. I was given Empracet 30 and It does not help at all with pain. Is it normal to have a crucial pain just below the knee cap and inside the knee. I just can't take it anymore. Can I have a cortisone injection in this area.

Please help!!!!!!!

Just want to explain what I meant by inside the knee : the pain comes from inside naturaly but it is located on the left side of the knee, it's like a sharp pain that comes and goes whether I move or not. Hope this is more understandable.
Thank you

Yes, because that's where your adhesions were! At least now you know your MUA was really necessary.
A cortisone injection is not going to help and is inappropriate anyway.

What pain meds do you have to hand?

Are you icing and elevating?

Thank you for your assurance and yes I rest, elevate and ice at least 4 to 6 time a day.

As for the meds, I was given Empracet 30 one ot two every 4 hours.

But for how long? If it's anything less than 40 minutes at a time, then it's not enough.

Empracet is just acetaminophen and codeine - nowhere near strong enough for an MUA. No wonder you are in such pain, my dear! You need Tramadol and paracetamol to manage this pain. Can you get some from your GP?

I ice up to one hour at a time, so I think I am ok. I do follow the BS mantra.

As for Tramadol, I took it when I had my TKR back in June and I felt like I was having the worst hangover of my life and before that I was given supeudol and didn't eat or drink for almost five days.

At that point I was given Empracet.

Since MUA, I went back to pt 3times a week. My ROM is stll at 115 and extension -5. They push me till I yell stop and now I am to a point where I have to take back more pain med. I can't walk very far wihtout hurting to a point that I have to stop, not even a half block. The swelling has not gone down at all. Where I had my TKR the pt was not working to a point of pain but where I have to go now they do not have the same philosophy, they push you too far and it's not working for me. Sometimes I cry to a point where
I would like to have my old bones back. I do regret my decision.

The way it works here, if I stop going, let say a week to see if it gts better, I am not allowed to go back. That is our health plan.

Any suggestion any one????? I feel like I am going for a nervous breakdown and this is the last thing I want. I have not got out once since TKR, no restaurant, no diner with friens or family. I can't stay at the diner table even with something to put under my feet.

Could you change to another PT practice more in line with less aggressive PT? If not, consider becoming a PT dropout, because it isn't helping you.

I agree--maybe you should just quit PT--I imagine that by now you pretty much know the routine anyway. I was considered finished at 9 wks., and have just continued with the exercises on my own--skipping busy days and doing the ones I feel benefit me on slow days. Personally I find that increased reps do more for me (more gently) than weights, bands etc.. If you don't want to give up completely on PT, then go only once a week and simply refuse to do anything that hurts and don't allow them to hurt you.

I am several weeks ahead of you and I still take 1/2 of a tylenol 3 at night most nights. I miss being able to get the regular tylenol with codeine. I lived in Canada for years but am back in the States and codeine is strictly prescription meds. here. I find the codeine works well for me.

PT to the point of making you cry is very bad for your knee. Don't put up with it.
Tell your therapist you will not stand for it any more. Remember that you are in charge. The therapist works for you, not the other way round. You don't have to please the therapist. He/she has to please you.

Thank you everyone. It seems it's unanimous : stop the pt and continue at home. I am seeing my OS next Wenesday, see what he has to say and most probably drop the pt. And I might take polarbear's advice and see a pt in the private sector for another advice and continue by my self.

What's making me hesitate is I am the only one there with those problems and the only one that's been there for so long. So, could I have a problem ??????

Thanks again and any other advice or suggestion are very welcome.

Yes. The problem is that your knee does not like the aggressive therapy and it is protesting.
Your knee is different from everyone else's knee, because no one else had exactly the same degree of damage before surgery and no one else's knee had exactly the same surgery as your knee. That's why we advise people not to compare their progress with anyone else's.

If you wind up paying privately, consider infrequent appointments to check on progress, get pointers for what you might want to do at home, or something minimal. Whomever you see should share the BoneSmart philosophy and will encourage you with appropriate treatments.

:yes!:@PolarBear60 thank you for the pointers because I will be paying and their fees are quite expensive but it might be worth the money.

For instance, as my PT was ending, I arranged access to a swimming pool. When I told them, they were ecstatic for me. I asked if they had pool exercises they could print out for me to do, and they happily did so. This is the type of practice with the patient foremost in their minds.

That is just a good idea specially that we are going down to Florida in December and there is a pool at my front door.
I already started to make inquirery at private pt center and the cost of one visit is over $100. But I would give anything to see improvement whitout having pain every day.

By the way, last night was my first night without waking up once. Wow!!!!

Consider waiting up to a month before pursuing that private solution. While you're waiting, write down your specific questions and concerns. Then, if you have something specific you think they can help you with, consider making that appointment.

I was able to go out to eat comfortably by asking for a booth and propping my leg ip on the booth beside me. I wasn't allowed to bend the knee for a month and I was already a month out of TKR surgery and going stir crazy. Of course I had a big brace on my leg, but putting my leg up in a restaurant meant I could eat and chat leisurely.

Hope you get some answers from your OS and can find a non-aggressive PT. My OS group had their own PTs in office to insure patients got the correct PT. I loved it there and didn't want to be released!
