Bilateral THR Double in December - Done!

I didn't have staples but just getting rid of the tape felt soo good, I'm sure getting the staples out will feel great. The opioid thing is a real big deal here, the pharmacy won't even fill what the Dr. prescribes if it's too much. Can't blame them as it;s such a problem around here.
You're in Brooklyn, I have pizza envy along with every other type of food.

@jenTjenT oh the wonderful staples! Hopefully the nurse has already been there and you are having that wonderful relief of those :censored: staples being gone!

I know the walker can be frustrating, especially in small spaces but don't hurry to push assistive devices aside. Definitely keep it close by the bed for those night trips to the bathroom, gives you some added stability.
:friends:

Hello and Happy Friday! :hi:

45 staples :yikes: Yikes! I'll bet you're relieved to have them out.
I didn't have staples and honestly they scare me and look
Frankenstein-ish. :scaredycat:Let's say, I sympathize with your jitters over the removal. Thankfully it's now behind you.

Happy Two Week Anniversary!

I was so fed up with the walker this morning, I grabbed the crutches for moving about my tiny apartment

Your comment above made me laugh and reminded me of my mom who at 81 had her second THR and within a week threw the walker to the curb telling us IT GOT IN HER WAY! :heehee:

Hope you have a nice weekend!

You are doing great @jenTjenT Please be careful on your stoop. Sounds like you avoided swelling so wonderful news there. I can’t imagine 2 at a time, but agree the revision is less disruptive to muscle tissue. I don’t have a hard area on my revision side and no numbness either this go around. Delighted to hear how well you are doing. Remember all the walking you do, going to and from kitchen, bathrooms all provide “exercise”. Nothing magical about waking outside.

@RinTinTin
Thank you! You were right, it really didn't hurt at all!
The visiting nurse said "okay, thins is gong to hurt" which didn't reassure me, luckily she was wrong
I took a walk outside on Thursday with the physical therapist using crutches, it went pretty wetd with the therapist using only a cane! I took it slow, apparently my gait is a wreck (no surprise) but we went 4-5 blocks and back, which is the farthest I've walked with the new equipment installed.
I'm going to go read your thread - I see you’re a bilateral too! I'm curious to read how your reccovery has gone, with a few months in between.
Cheers!

I FINALLY TOOK A SHOWER YESTERDAY!
IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

@djklaugh
Yes PT was all for using crutches and even the cane (just a little). I went outside yesterday with my daughter and as per PT used the walker, just for safety as it was my first time outside without PT.
All went well and she wasn't even too embarrassed by me, but she did take us on the quietest block possible !:umm:

@Fit4Family
I've been keeping my phone in my pocket all the time, so I'm recording how many steps I take each day. (also for safety god forbid anything happens) It's astonishng how much walking I do around this tiny apartment! Tiding up after a 12 year old boy slob earns me a lot of steps, having one hand on a cane or crutch makes moving his **** into his room even more challenging!
And he is on good behavior!
Honestly two hips at a time hasn't been that bad, partially because the revision side was much stronger to begin with. I did not imagine I would be this mobile at 2 weeks post op!

jen,

You're doing great - NYC must be a tough place to recover, though :) Be careful with the steps and the sometimes crowded sidewalks.

May 2019 - here's what I found to be helpful:
- elevate (with one hip it is easy to roll one up, but with two op hips ya have to take turns, I guess)
- ice (I used silicon bags - takes at least two so you can keep one freezing for the next usage - at least 30-45 minutes each time)
- Tylenol ( I substituted 1000 mg, 4 times a day vs narcotics - it worked well as I really didn't like the way the narcotics made me feel on my first hip replacement)
- walk in between each icing evolution
- I did no PT other than stretching and walking
- did I mention icing and elevating and walking? :-)

You will be amazed how great you feel and how mobile you are in about a week!!

Here's my story - https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/thr-a-doing-well.54206/

You sound to be doing splendid!!!:happydance:
Don't get too ambitious... still early days and your body is sucking up those precious energy stores for healing.
Great Update my Both at Once Pal!

@Eman85

Somehow I missed a bunch of comments, including yours?!
That's crazy that the pharmacy won't even fill what the Dr. prescribes! I guess I understand based on the severity of the epidemic, but (in my opinion) lack of regulation for 2 decades has led to over regulation now.
Anyway, yes we have amazing food everywhere here! Even the street food is amazing! I've lived here for close to 30 years and all the walking (I don't own a car) is what keeps the eating in check! :loll:

I'm really really really ready to stop sleeping on my back, anyone have any idea when that will be?
I don't even mind the folded pillow between my knees, but not being able to move at night is awful.
I'm actually a stomach sleeper, and I tried to "log roll" with the pillow in place to my stomach a few nights ago... It made me a little nervous, especially when I had to right myself to go to the bathroom. With incisions on both sides still sore, side sleeping doesn't seem like an option at all.
I'm not scheduled to see my surgeon for a follow up until Feb 11th, maybe ask the PT when I start outpatient next week?

Another question - how long until you went to the movies? I'm heading outside by myself later today (PT approved) for the first time. My kids will be away all weekend and I'm afraid I might go INSANE all alone in this tiny apartment with just my cat! There is a theater just a few blocks from my apartment and I have the cushion riser thing... Thoughts?? Thank you!

@jenTjenT I'm well aware of the food, I'm from LINY originally. What section of Brooklyn are you in? My parents were from Queens and I spent a lot of time there.
The pharmacy limits the amount of pills, you can refill to get the rest. The pill epidemic in rural areas is incredible. It's slowed down a little in my county, now being replaced with heroin. We have a large meth problem here too. I remember the big heroin problem in NYC back in the 70's to 80's.
You're a double so I really feel for you as far as back sleeping. My left is tender at times from multiple surgery incisions but I could still get comfortable on that side or roll further to my stomach.
A movie theater within walking distance, that's really nice. I'd say the sitting shouldn't be a problem. The flip up seat might be a little dicey but they do have arm rests to lift yourself with. I'd say as long as you don't have to use the bathroom you'd be OK.

As far as sleeping, can you turn part ways up and put a pillow behind you and keeping the pillow between your legs so at least it's a small change in position but not totally on your incision?

Is there any way you can send an email to your surgeon's office and ask about the back sleeping? Or give them a call? I know a lot of us are told 6 weeks, some 9, it really varies by surgeon. The stomach sleeping is definitely something you need to clear with the surgeon, especially being double hippy recovery.

I had a wedge pillow that I got from Wal-Mart for $20. It was about 4 inches high on one end and sloped down to almost flat at the other end. It was as wide as my bed pillows. I basically put it at the head of the bed and they set my regular bed pillows on it. Took a little playing around to get everything to a comfortable position but it was a life saver as I am not a back sleeper. You can Google the pillow, was trying to copy and paste a picture of it but my kindle says nope! :heehee:

Great to here you're doing well outside the sleeping part. Not sure I'd not want to go to the theater alone right after TKR surgery. Too dark and 12 years ago or so I fell forward, cascading down on both knees at once (that along with other injuries being the prerequisites for osteo I feel). Be careful.

I'm in Cobble Hill, close to Borough Hall and downtown Brooklyn, kind of an aging yuppie area, but at least it's not hipsters!
I've read so much about the meth problem everywhere, but there's almost none of that here.
NYC is such a bubble, for better and for worse! I have tons of friends in Queens and when I have to move out of my current apartment I will probably move there too. Aside from Astoria, it's one of the few places that hasn't been overrun with gentrification.
I'm on the fence about the movies, maybe if I can get a friend to go with me. I do tend to get over confident sometimes and think "I'm fine" when I'm not. Still trying to work on being reasonable :loll:
