THR Double Hippie Now

@Layla- if you could change title to “double hippie now”

Hi all,
Thought I’d give you an update on my second THR, left side this time on Wednesday. Last one was 8 weeks ago.

Let’s just say I guess I had amnesia as to how painful it was the first time? Hmmm. I’m on the exact same pain meds, but it’s really more painful this time. Sigh. I’m more surprised than anyone. The good part is I’m not scared or worried how to move, that is old hat. Good thing as hubby and daughter are out of town this weekend, they had a previous commitment. My dear friend and neighbor is helping me.

The Home nurse that comes around said she doesn’t know why, but more of the double hip people hurt worse on second go around. Maybe it’s not in my head! Lol.

I’ll never get why people become addicted to opioids. I absolutely can not stand how they make me feel- yes they help with pain but oh my. I’m all gorked out on them, not to mention nausea and general body itch. Normal side effects, but yucky.

I’m doing well with my 5 dogs, at least I have a fenced in backyard they can just go out the door when I let them out. They are very well trained in that mom can’t be tripped, bumped, etc.

So I’m a body taking up space for the next few weeks. Ha ha. Just have to let our bodies heal.

Have a lovely Mother’s Day all!

I forgot to add, the fracture blisters are just beginning. Again. Grrrrrrrrr.

Oh my @Kikki
So good to hear you came through and are now home! Sorry this one is a more painful go around though.
The pills do dull that but I couldn't wait to get off them because I felt so awful on them.
I'm not liking what your nurse said about the second hurting more. Yikes! At least you are familiar with the drill
Ice, elevate, medicate.
When is you family back to help you? Nice that your friend is able to help. Is she staying with you or stopping by.
Please keep posting I am watching because I scheduled my left hip for aug 17! Want it sooner!

Hi Bebe,
Family comes home tomorrow. Best friend lives across the street, she comes in many times a day. She’s a life saver. She’s taking care of the horses also.

So your second hip is in August. I hear you about wanting it done sooner!
Of course I think this LTHR is going to feel like one LONG recovery since they were so close together. Haven’t got to really enjoy the first, as second sibling hip was a cry baby. Lol. At least it’s done and over. I know it’ll be good in a couple months, but oh boy. This one is rough. The OS said each hip surgery on same patient is different. One could take longer to recover or shorter. I guess I (cough, cough) assumed I’d be in the earlier recovery for the second. My bad. Assumptions and expectations set us up when they don’t meet our goals.

I knew better, but a girl can hope can’t she?!! Either way, I know I’ll heal up fine in the long game.

Nighty nite.

Hi @Kikki ....well done on the second hip.....like BeBe I might be going for the second round about August, so I'll also be watching your progress :) Sorry you're having a worse time with this one.....I have so little actual pain with this first one I think the next one is bound to be worse, as it can't be much better! Still, I'm glad it's this way round as it's probably easier to cope with a more difficult recovery when you know what you're doing. As my left isn't actually very painful at the moment I could leave it for longer and wait for a 'sign' but I really feel as if I just want to get them both done and dusted instead of having it hanging over me, so I'm halfway to making my mind up (I think....maybe... :sigh: :heehee:) You're only a few days on, so hope this rough period is just temporary for you.....no need to remind you to ice, is there?....I bet your freezer has never worked so hard! :ice::sleep:

Thanks @anny. Yes, I sure loves me some ice gel packs. I have three and rotate them. They are a blessing and give amazing relief.

I know it’s early, I’m sure it will calm down. Thanks for all good thoughts. I’ll post my experience along the way. . Nice to have this forum for middle of night can’t sleep times!

Just waving hi I had my LTHR done on Tuesday. Harder going than I expected that’s for sure. All good healing thoughts to you.

Hi @Kikki looks like we are going down similar paths had my right done 31st Jan and just on Friday had left done can relate to so much in your posts except the blistering never had that my right healed quickly and I wad able to drive after 8 days and virtually off painkillers by then you do forget the pain from the first one the thought of being able to drive in 7 days just doesn't seem possible today but it is amazing how quickly things hopefully improve but we certainly can't take for granted that both will be the same be intrested to follow your progress as a fellow double hippy :yay:

:hi:One of the moderators will change your title.
I agree with you on the pain meds, just general feeling of yucky. But necessary, at least for me.
Won't be too much longer I hope before things take a turn for the better.
Hope today is peaceful.:friends:

Hi @Kikki
Brave soul you are returning for a repeat performance after only 8 weeks.
Don't know if I could do that. It makes sense to have one seemingly long recovery and put it behind you though. I'm sorry this one is more of a challenge than the first. Just think how wonderful you'll feel by the end of Summer. With months behind you at that point, you'll feel like a new woman! I'm excited for you!

Wishing you a Happy Mothers Day and a peaceful week as you continue healing!

@Kikki
Family home yet? You will probably rest a bit easier even thought the dear friend is indeed a dear friend!
I forgot you had horses! Me too. Five. That's a whole nother conversation right?
I feel so bad you are having more pain this time. My OS said the same thing; every joint different. You get what you get.
Hoping your new one settles down soon. How is your first one doing? Any issues?
I'm calling the OS to see about moving my date up ASAP.

@BeBe
Family just got home, daughter does eventing with her horse. Of course there is drama here, had to withdraw from last third portion of the event due to lameness issue.
Glad someone is home with me. Kinda sketchy by myself. Wouldn’t recommend it. Lol. Also when I was in hospital I was informed my water heater was broke. So as I’m laying there after surgery I was able to arrange for a plumber to come the next morning and install a new one. When it rains it pours.
So RTHR from eight weeks ago is wonderful! A little muscle weakness and some odd twinges, but boy I’m tickled pink! I know my new left one will get there too. I like your OS’s phrase you get what you get. That’s correct!!

I remembered someone had horses- now I’ll remember it’s you. We’ve got 5 also. Yes that is a whole other conversation.
@Layla- wish I could say I was brave, but actually it was fear that motivated me. The fear of left hip coming anywhere near the pain level of right. Plus I could enjoy the good hip with 1/2 that was wonky. Now I’ll heal, and still enjoy the pool and a late summer vacation somewhere!

What a great group here. We can vent, crab, talk about our situations, and cheer others on. Not that misery loves company, but to not feel so alone in what we experience. Peoples attention span runs out quickly. As soon as they know you’ve made it through surgery, busy lives take over. Plus they don’t what to hear ad naseuem all we are feeling and experiencing.

Kikki

Hi,
I understand you moving forward before the pain became too severe. I'll do the same if my other hip begins bothering me. Thinking back on limping and suffering sporadic pain for months on end seems ridiculous in hindsight.

We do have a great group here and we all get it! We have a common bond. Just because it's over (surgery) doesn't mean we don't need to sort through emotions, physical sensations and issues. It's major surgery, life changing and this journey affects us in more ways than just the physical. You're safe here and we'll always be here. Take comfort in that....
@Kikki

@Kikki
I was wondering what previous engagement would keep your family away while you were fresh home from surgery.
Well your daughter eventing explains everything! Ha! Ha! Been there done that!
My kids too! Daughter more than Son though.
That is from a previous chapter in our lives and the retirees are happily munching grass in the back pasture as I type. Just hate to hear of a lameness. Hope it is not serious and just needs a rest up. Such an athletic sport for horse and rider.
Maybe we should move to PM and discuss eventing details. I miss it! Several on the forum are horse people

Hoping your newest hip has settled down painwise - I hate to imagine more pain the second time around yikes!
My OS came through and my new surgery date is June 22!!

@BeBe
How neat, you’ll have your other hip done in 5 1/2 weeks. It will go quick!! I’m happy for you. Get it done and over with.

Yeah, nutty horse people. Priorities you know, Lol. I was fine with it, knowing they would only be gone for 3 days. Vet is coming out tomorrow so we will see. Sad if she’s to be retired. My daughter has 2 years left in high school and I don’t want any more horses.

Hip is starting to calm down, so that is quite positive. Just hanging out letting it heal. Patience is not my strong point.

Kikki

So happy that you are finally double hippy DONE.
Could've done without all the extra drama...water heater, horse, etc...
But oh life does keep going on.

I've had alot of drama the last 6 months myself and I just had a massive event at work expecting over 50 volunteers and only had half of that.
But, my hips were the only thing that didn't hurt at the end of the day...and I do SO remember how that chronic pain affected my life in so many ways!
Hopefully you will stay patient, as the payoff is HUGE!

@Mojo333
Isn’t that amazing how your new bionic hips were the only unpainful body part. Gosh I sure like hearing that!!! There is always drama or something going on in life- just the way it goes. I just roll with it. Doesn’t do any good in getting worked up. I’ll going to try and be very patient and am just so grateful of having a problem that could be surgically fixed.

I feel blessed. I love hearing how your quality of life has improved since a year ago.

Wahoo!!!!

Hi @Kikki .....you and BeBe are setting a bit of a precedent for us other Musketeers with your second ones so quickly! Glad to hear you're doing well, hope your first AND second recoveries are uneventful :fingersx: and don't tax your patience too much :heehee:

:wave: hope you are hanging in there.
I know these first days can be awfully rough so I hope you are spending alot of time icing and are able to get some sleep in.
It gets better...:friends:

Anyone ever have knee issues after a hip replacement?
My knee cap seems to be “catching” in my newest left hip side. Now I’ve never ever had any kind of issues with my knees before.
The first right hip from March 9-that right knee started to hurt only going up stairs about 3 weeks after hip replacement. It has since resolved.

Just wondering if others experienced knee issues AFTER surgery.

So it’s not too painful, more irritating. I know the poor body has had to compensate for several years. Sigh. I just want a break.

Lol, if it’s not one thing it’s another!
