Thanks Kevin. I'm so glad both hips are done! You know the feeling :-) Thanks for checking in and especially posting that video of waterskiing. When dianemarie and I got together earlier in the week, we talked about how we hoped that people would be checking back in every once in a while to let us know how they were doing--good to hear from one of the "old friends." :-)

Dorothy

Gosh sorry that I missed out on the hippie lunch !! Did I read Syracuse ? My wife and I just drove thru SYR on the way from Lake George (my original hometown) to Chicago (current). We were vacationing in LG in fact that is where the water skiing video was taken. Chi-town is nice but we DO miss Upstate NY, especially in the fall.

Hi Dorothy

Great to hear that you had a wonderful get together with Di.. that would be awesome to catch up with a BS friend.. Aussies, seem to dissapear off the forum as soon as recovery and life takes off - exactly as it should be though..

I am looking forward to a photo of that first horse ride xx

"For me, it's like the sun came back out and I was able to start living again!"

Amen, Sister!

Forget about the number of lbs.... we all have our own separate story, you know?

I'm delighted to be MOVING and reading and connecting with others who have experienced a similar surgery. I remember walking into the "pre-op class" and looking around the room at very large people who hadn't made an attempt at losing a pound, and were not in chronic pain, as I had been in for the last year. Sigh. Everyone has their own "style."

YOU ARE DOING FABULOUS!

Hugs,

Alicia

For me, it's like the sun came back out and I was able to start living again!

Amen!

We're all at a different pace.

Have a lovely weekend.

Alicia

Hey, Dorothy,

How are you? Hopefully feeling better each day and healing that muscle tear. They take a long time to heal. The days are a tiny bit cooler and makes it easier to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Hope doggies and horses are enjoying it too!

Hi Diane, Thanks for thinking of me. I hope you are doing well and your hip/leg are improving even more as time goes by. I was very impressed when I saw you walk without your cane limp-free at the restaurant :-)

Unfortunately, I'm having a "downer" time. I'm tired of the leg hurting in front from the muscle tear and I'm tired of my back hurting, along with referred pain from both. Everything hurts from the waist down on my right side--not horrible pain, but it is there 24/7 and increases with the smallest little thing I do, so it's really getting on my nerves.

I was able to get in to see the back/pain clinic yesterday and I think I finally have convinced them that a lot of my back pain is coming from my SI joint and they are going to inject that. Unfortunately the earliest opening is October 3rd--I was like HUH!!!??? I talked with the nurse practitioner I saw and asked her if she would talk with someone to see if they can squeeze me in earlier--much earlier, I hope. She, too, seemed upset by the schedule and said she will call the other office where these are done and kind of beg them to fit me in earlier. I was grateful for that. She said she will call me when she knows more, but to call her by Wednesday if I haven't heard from her. I think if I can get the back feeling better I can wait out the healing on the hip flexor tear. It's just the the two problems together are getting very difficult to tolerate day in and day out ... The PT has given me stretches and exercises for the back, but they don't do anything. He thinks I just have so much inflammation there that it's going to be tough to quiet it down. He was in favor of trying the injection into the joint.

Speaking of PT, I saw the him today and he is frustrated (for me) that the back is bugging me more and the hip flexor healing is slow slow slow ... and I can't even do the stuff we started with a couple of weeks ago. That's depressing. The pain clinic had suggested trying a TENS unit for the back at PT and then buying one for home if it worked. He put that on me--actually it was an IF kind of TENS that gives more of a pulsating electrical stimulation that he likes better than the regular TENS--I liked it better too and thought it was more effective than the TENS straight current. In the past, TENS really hasn't done much for my back, but today I did feel better afterwards and I still feel somewhat better later in the day now. I think I'll have him use it one more time next week and then start pursuing purchasing a home unit through my insurance company if it gives me relief again. They cover TENS units by I don't know if they cover the IF unit specifically. They told me to get the billing code and call them back and they would tell me if it's covered.

The back/pain clinic also encouraged me to up my Percocet/oxycodone frequency. I had cut back on it a while back because I thought I was building a tolerance--the dose I was taking after the hip replacement just didn't seem to be doing much any more as time went on. So, I was only taking it once or twice a day and decreasing the dose as well, and had planned to just discontinue it soon. I thought I could get by with over the counter pain meds. But, I can see that's not going to work. I started taking it on a regular basis again after I got home from my appointment yesterday, and it does help quite a bit and I feel like I can cope better. I couldn't take it too close to my drive to physical therapy this morning, so I was very eager to take it after I arrived home. It seems like my response to it is back and it's working again. I do have to be careful that I don't over do, though, and aggravate the muscle tear further, just because I don't feel as much pain. But, I'll be careful.

The weather has been cooler and you are right--the dogs and horses are very happy with that. Especially the horses. I think they got so bored hiding from the heat and flies in the barn most of the day. My mare, Babe, absolutely hates the heat and flies and she gets a bit depressed when we have a hot spell. She'll take snow and cold over heat and flies any day. When I went out to take care of them earlier I gave her a good, long scratching-massage in some of her favorite places and she was pretty happy about that. It's so good for me to spend time with the horses--just being near them, touching them, and taking in their beauty makes the day better no matter how I'm feeling. Babe and I have a strong bond and she's pretty in tune with how I'm feeling--sometimes she looks at me with an "I'm sorry you feel bad, Mom" look that kind of melts my heart. She's a good girl. That's why I was determined to start walking out to see them as soon as I could after surgery--I made my first trip out to see them less than a week post op (walker through the grassy yard!) and I haven't missed a day yet!

Hope everyone is doing well in Bonesmart Land!

Dorothy

Hi Dorothy

So sorry honey, that you are having a downer... it is tough when you have an injury on top of the surgery and recovery is not straight forward.... my heart goes out to you :) I wish I could give you a real hug ((( hug ))).. sending lots of love xoxoxoxoxox

Hi Dorothy,

I hope you'll get some relief from the SI pain and the flexor, soon. In the meantime, would it help you to keep a small journal of daily reports on how you feel, what stretches or exercises you are able to do that day, any out and about time, meds. -- whatever is going on that is hip related at that time. While you seem to have a remarkable capacity to remember details about your hip & back really well, a small journal might help you to see progress differently and also make connections when things seem a little out of whack. It's also good for reflection as you get further and further out and your progress changes.

I spent a lot of time yo-yoing in the months out from surgery -- having days where many things ached, feeling like I couldn't take care of what needed to be done around the house, needing the cane, etc., then there would be a little break and I'd feel a smidge better (with no real conclusive reason why). It took a long time to get wider breaks from the yo-yoing and much of that has to do with ongoing healing accompanied by deliberate periods of rest. Also, as an extrovert if you can arrange for some people time -- phone or in person, that can be a spirit lifter when you've been feeling secluded.

Is your jewelry on etsy? just curious...
Hope you feel a bit better soon,
Cardie

Dorothy, you are too positive to remain down for long. So this too shall pass. And return. And pass. And so it goes. Which is why Cardie's idea about journaling is so good, if you aren't already doing it. I am continually turning back to my journal of my first THR, and I'm continually surprised by it. What I remember in general is that it was a quick, easy recovery. But the day to day ups and downs and backs and forths are not quite so straightforward. So this new sore spot I seem to have for the last two days also showed up last time, and I see that it lasted a few days and then was gone. Only to be replaced by a new sore spot. I see that I tinkered with meds here and there probably too often. Find a sweet spot and stick with it for a while is what I learned this time around.

Of course this time around, you have an entirely new wrinkle to iron out....the damage from the early PT. And there will be no more hips to benefit from whatever lessons you are learning this time. But the journalling is still a great idea, because we process so much when we write. It's a way of thinking out loud....much like some of our posts here on Bonesmart. Many of us go beyond just the questions and answers about our surgeries. We learn about ourselves and others; we discover new passions to make up for the old ones we might have to let go of; we discover the meaning of our lives as we live out the frustration of waiting for those lives to begin again.

I'm hoping to hear that the pills and the TENS and your own indomitable spirit have prevailed.

Sharon

Thanks. You are all really sweet and supportive. :-)

I took a 2 Percocet (strength 7.5 oxycodone-1 morning and one after lunch) and 10 mg of oxycodone in the evening yesterday (the most I've used in a few weeks) and it did make a big difference with my pain level and also my general feeling of well being. I guess I'm just not good at dealing with chronic pain, and having the pain in the front and the back on that side upsets me to no end! In addition to not physically feeling that great, I want it gone so I can do all the things I dreamed about doing after my hip replacements. Such a shame--the hip has not given me a lick of trouble; it's the muscle and back slowing me down. The hip itself hasn't even had a chance to shine and strut its stuff.

I walked around more yesterday, but it was all level ground and I went slowly and took lots of breaks. I spent a lot of time out with the horses and that is always nice. Mike was doing lawn mowing and some work around the barn, and he had the dogs' attention a lot of the time, which was nice. As much as I love them to pieces, their clingy, in-my-face nature gets a little wearing sometimes. It's nice to have someone else babysit them for a while. Gave me some time to reflect and relax without a cute dog nose appearing for attention :-)

I've been thinking, I'm going to talk with my PT about being a little more adventurous with my rehab. He is super cautious, and I do appreciate that. At the same time, I think I can do more than he has me doing without further injury. Some of what gets me down is that my functioning is so low compared to last hip. I'm still needing my cane all the time, especially at times when my pain medications have worn off. I think I need to build more strength and feel like I'm moving forward. At the same time, of course, I can't make the tear worse. It's fine line, but I think I want to push a little more. I would think that my body would let me know when I've reached the "this is too much" point, and as long as I pay attention to that I should be fine ... I think. I'll talk with my PT.

The idea about journaling is a good one and I will do that. I've been meaning to do it ... actually, I kind of do that here.

We had a very cool night and all my cats are inside huddled up to stay warm--lt's been a long time since they stayed inside at night--they love to play in the fenced cat yard at night (I've got a nice set up so they can use the dog door to go and out as they please, along with the dogs. They love it!). They turn into nocturnal animals during the summer and tend to sleep a lot during the day, so last night was a switch. My house is cool and it is feeling more and more like fall, not summer--YIKES!! At least the days are still warm. I love fall, but the dreaded winter isn't far behind! Super YIKES! ha ha

Hugs to all!

Dorothy

Good news! The back clinic can squeeze me in for an SI joint injection next week. Whew! The thought of waiting until October was a depressing thought. I'm hoping that will quiet down inflammation in there. I think it's been a problem for me long before the hips even started bothering me, but I just blew it off and kept going. Should have taken it more seriously back then.

I'm back to taking oxycodone/Percocet regularly throughout the day--averaging 3-4 times a day. I don't wait until I can't stand the pain any longer, as I was doing before. I feel so much better. I guess I will just have to take the "hard stuff" for a bit longer to feel better and to be able to be more mobile. I am still careful because of the muscle tear, but I do walk more than I was before and I think that is helping to build my strength in general, which is a good thing. I stop when I feel my pain is worsening or my leg gets fatigued.

I spent a lot of Sunday out with the horses (and my dogs too). They really are so sweet and being around them always makes me feel better.

A big thanks to everyone who keeps plugging along with me and supporting me during my recovery :-)

Dorothy

We are all in this together. Each of our individual experiences is piling up a whole lot of collective wisdom. SO GLAD to hear you have gotten control of the pain level. Good things ahead!

Sharon

Hi Dorothy, just checking in. You are so right that we need to be happy with whatever accomplishments there are. I am riding my bike and kayaking and can't get totally rid of the cane, someone else told me they lost the cane a long time ago but can't bike, someone doing yoga and the next person can't bend over. What a motley, wonderful crew we all are, aren't we?

... and though I guess I don't look like the pills bury dough boy, I sure do feel like him and I have gained a substantial amt of weight, enough that clothes don't fit etc. Actually got my WW tracker out yesterday to start tracking my food again. All this visiting and vacationing is over for a bit so it is time to get back on track. This weight has got to go and I do know that slow and steady will win that race too. it takes a while for it to all come together, healing, mood, motivation, but It will.

Glad the PT is being careful, sounds like you found a good one. Sounds like you've also come to grips a bit more with the "healing of the tear" being a slow process. Hope things continue to go smoothly.

(Pam, too funny about your day with the cap'n)

Cathy

Thanks Sharon and Cathy! Yes, I think I'm finally coming to terms with the slower recovery. It just burst my bubble because prior to surgery, I had this little timeline about how I was going to finally get my life back on track and do all these fun things soon afterwards ... reality check!!! Some times life doesn't go as we plan. I'm still not happy about the glitches, but dealing with them better.

Dorothy

I hear you sister. Those glitches take a while to adjust to, then we move on. I remember a few along the way that immediately brought my mood down. It takes a while in this process to be able to let go of all the control and follow our bodies lead. I had my own timeline too haha, that went out the window a while back. When I find myself getting frustrated, I. Say to myself " where are you? Here and what time is it" it is now, trying to get myself back in the moment and realizing that is all I can control.

I am so glad you got in for the shot. Hopefully that will help calm things down for you. I will keep my fingers crossed. [Bonesmart.org] Dorothy's 2nd hip recovery, June 22, 2012

Since you had been lusting after my Pennsylvania Peach jam and delicious blueberries etc, I thought I would share that I am back to a little canning. It is not like I am suzi homemaker or something, but I do small batches and we give them away (cept a few for us) over the holidays and birthdays etc. local peaches are in so I made a batch of my moms favorite peach-ginger chutney. Mmm it turned out good. I turned my mom onto chutney a while back and now she is addicted, she is so funny. She is in Wisconsin and I mail it to her. Also going to make peach salsa today. That is usually a big hit when we give it away. Actually on our way back from vacation we stopped at an apple orchard and picked a quick bag of early apples. Going to make some applesauce and freeze it for us. Nothing like pulling that out and heating it up in the middle of winter. I swear by the time winter gets to us our freezer (we have an extra one) is chuck full of fruit. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, applesauce, cherries, a few rasberries. Ok, enough about food. If we ever do hook up in the "cuse" I am definitely going to bring you a jar of something.

Interesting point that Sharon made about her journaling and that there are ups and downs she forgot about. Nice to know some of this won't even be a distant memory.
Make it a good day Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,

I hope you get some more relief from the injections next week. Glad that you are out and about with the dogs and horses and hope you are getting some nap time too, if you are able. Send Mike to all the Farmer's markets for fresh fruits and veggies for you, maybe those will help with healing -- and maybe Cathy will teach us how to can peaches, I am seeing them and early apples down our way too!

Take care,
Cardie

Hi Dorothy

So pleased you are getting some quality time with your horses and dogs... animals are so good for the soul.

Good luck with your injection :)

Hey Dorothy

Hope that shot does the trick. I have had two in my back this year, L5/S1 if I remember correcty, and both gave me relief. I am counting on your full recovery, 'cause you deserve to get back your full life back. I am sure it will be soon! Hope you, the dogs, and the horses continue to enjoy the summer.

Hugs
Suki

Hi there Dorothy,
Just checking in to see how you are doing. I am sad to hear that you are still feeling the effects from the over zealous early PT, but glad to know that you have been given a pain relief option in terms of pills which I hope are making your days sweeter. I also am keeping my fingers crossed for this up-coming shot (great news that they squeezed you in!).
Like Sharon, I know your spirit is going to get you through this!
I must say, I am startled to hear you talking about cooler days...already?!
Thinking about you and sending you warm hugs,
Elle
