THR Campervan's recovery

Physio impressed with hip recovery. Im to keep going with exercise programme.

Left shoulder may have a tear. Need to get xray and ultrasound. He's given me isometric exercises to do and hopefully avoid frozen shoulder.

How long does sore quad muscles down front of thigh last? That's pretty much the only issue that's left and it's giving me start up pain around my knee.

I had sore muscles off and on until around 6 or 6.5 weeks. The soreness would move around - sometimes it would be the quad, sometimes the groin, and sometimes even in the back of my upper leg. I'm at 7 weeks now, but about a week ago suddenly my soreness went way down. I still have some residual soreness if I move a certain way, but it's way down.

Having said that, I think this is a highly individual thing. It likely depends on your conditioning before the surgery, how much they need to manipulate you during the surgery, how much swelling you had, and just how each of us is put together. Some people seem to have more soreness early on, and for others it lingers.

Something that may (or may not) have helped me was to gently massage my upper leg. I have some hard plastic things with balls, roughly the size of my thumb, on the end. They are made for massage, and are easily held in the hand. The day before I had my breakthrough day with much reduced pain, I was carefully massaging my leg with these. I'd find a painful spot, and gently push the ball into that spot and move it around slightly. Maybe I was breaking up some scar tissue, or realigning the muscle, or maybe it had no benefit - I don't know - but it might be something to try.

Happy One Month Anniversary!
At one month post op, pain is certainly not uncommon and many times occurs in relation to our activity level, including any PT or exercises you may be engaged in. In addition, sometimes early on as your body is adjusting to the prosthetic, the stiff stem of the implant presses into the bone which is more flexible causing pain known as femoral stem pain, which does ease over time. If what you're experiencing increases in frequency or intensity, consider checking in with your surgeon's care team for their thoughts and advice. Keep in mind, it's still very early days into a recovery that most often lasts a full year. I hope you have a good day and weekend, Campervan!

I saw surgeon for review yesterday. I'll be 8 weeks post op next Monday. He's pleased with how I'm doing. He twisted my hip in all directions and I didn't flinch at all. I'm discharged unless I feel I need to see him. He'll be sending me recovery questionnaires periodically and if he sees anything amiss in those he'll call me back in.

I mentioned to him that when I lie in bed at night I feel a throbbing in my butt cheek. He said a lot of patients mention this, its inflammation and it does resolve.

I got his clearance to go into pools and spa pools. He does still want me to wait at least three months post op before we go out on the jetski.

I asked him about my other hip and he checked my xrays and tested it and said it definitely isn't ready for replacement and unlikely to be so for quite some time.

I'm walking about 3km each day, doing my exercises with some strengthening now added.

As well as travelling and hour and a half to see him we also did some shopping while in the bigger town, took the jetski to be serviced and got our ears suctioned. So a big day. Today I'm absolutely whacked, no energy at all. So taking it easy but did go to physio for my shoulder this morning.

Sounds like you're doing great! So happy for you!

Happy Two Month Anniversary!
Great update above! You’re doing very well.
I hope you have a wonderful week! :)

My RTHR is doing well but my left hip is now painful in the groin. I did get the surgeon to check it when I saw him 3 weeks ago but the pain has come since then. I'm hoping I've only strained/pulled something. If I bend over I get a sharp pain in the groin. It started about a week ago. Its limiting how far I can walk and stopping me doing some of my exercises. I have an appointment with my physiotherapist next week so I'll get her to take a look if its no better.

Most here (including myself) will advise to lay off some of the exercise for a couple of days, ice & see if it resolves.

It may be overworking to help your new hip. I found days I was out doing errands to be very tiresome. The day I was out was fine until bedtime and then the next day was needed for resting up. Listening to the clues has helped me tremendously.

I saw my physio yesterday and she is almost certain the left hip is tense muscles. She did a deep massage and dry needling and today it does feel about 50% better. Praying she's right.

As regards the RTHR, that's doing really well. It'll be three months on 13 August. I have good range of movement, can put my shoes and socks on, climb stairs etc. The pain in my buttocks still appears every few days but have mostly gone.

Today I had to sit for a couple of hours sitting a my desk doing volunteer work. When I stood up it was painful all down the outside of my THR leg. Once I had walked around for a couple of minutes it eased off. I took paracetemol. Note to self - take breaks if need to work at desk for prolonged period of time.

I found my hip was stiff and painful when I went back to work after 12 weeks That and the driving took it out of me.
Your recovery sounds great though. Now is the time to exercise a little patience!

Happy Three Month Anniversary!
I hope you're taking breaks with your volunteer work and its becoming easier for you. This recovery takes a lot of time and patience, for sure.
Best Wishes and Happy Tuesday!

The surgeon told me I could go out on the water on our big jetski after at least 3 months. Last Wednesday was 3 months and 1 day and the weather and sea coditions were amazing. So we went out. My new hip performed brilliantly.

The on Friday we walked 5kms - 2.5 kms into town, had lunch and walked back. The most previously was just over 3kms without a break.

Life is good.

My right hip is now 8 months old and doing well. However, my left hip isn't. The young physio at beginning of August thought it was all muscular but it isnt. I saw my surgeon late November and I need left hip replacement and planning it for June this year.

Not related to my hips or knees, but I have been getting hives since mid December and wondering if I've now got a reaction to the diclofenac I take most days. GP thought I had allergies/hay fever and as hadn't improved today I've had skin prick tests for a bunch of airborne and food stuff. All negative. I've googled the side effects of long term use of diclofenac and it seems it can give urticaria/hives. Anybody else experienced or heard of this? When my GP calls me to talk through the allergy test results I'll ask him and I'll also ask my physio, who I'm seeing tomorrow for my continuing shoulder problem. I'm now seeing my older physio who is the one who diagnosed my right hip needing to be replaced.

It's possible for us to develop sensitivity/allergy to almost anything throughout our lives, even things we've tolerated for decades. So yes the diclofenac is a possible suspect and discussing with your GP is the best next step.

Let us know about that as well as your path forward with leftie!

I'm still getting hives. I'm now going down another rabbit hole, and wondering if I have a metal allergy to my new hip. But if I did, wouldn't the hip hurt, be unstable etc? The hives come up everywhere, and hardly every around the hip area.
