THR Campervan's recovery

My PT told me to put my shoulders back and engage my core whenever I stand up to walk. It helped me stop rocking from side to side. Also, I have a bad shoulder and huge bleeding blisters on the heels of my hands. She recommended that I ditch the walker and use trekking poles for balance so I don’t lean on the poles. I still sometimes use a cane but try not to lean on it. Best wishes ona smooth recovery.

Hi! You seem to be doing really well! My surgery was a week behind you I think.

My recovery was improving rapidly each day for the first 11 days but for the past 3 days there's no change. My knees recoveries were the same and I would be stuck for days or sometimes a couple of weeks before any further improvement.

Today is Xray and tomorrow first review with surgeon.

Yes, @Campervan. That up-and-down track is how almost all of us progress. Those little plateaus and backward steps are a reminder that this is a long, slow recovery and we can't rush things.

Do let us know how your appointment goes!

Getting the pre review xray has been a nightmare. I went to lab last Fri 9am and it's usually no appointment required. I was told there was no radiographer on site and to come back at 12.30pm and this was an appointment. At 12.27 as we were parking my phone rings cancelling the booking and rescheduling 11.45am Tuesday. They were miving to new building Monday. I explained about my Wed appointment with surgeon and they assured me he would have the images around 10 MI s after xray.

I turn up for appointment today at new premises and its all new equipment and 4 people learning how to use it. They told me to lie flat on bed and I said isnt one to be done standing. Off they go and check and then tell me to stand in front of different machine. Then tell me to lie on surgical side. NO WAY I say. Anyway they work out a way to get the xray.

The best is yet to come...... they then tell me they aren't able to upload the images to their central system and don't know when that will happen. WHAT! I left and after a couple of phone calls find out they are being manually uploaded and HOPE to have them done before my appointment.

Surgeons PA is now monitoring it and liaising with her contact in the xray labs larger branch.

Oh no! I would not want to go through that! Document your experience in case you have to do it again- you should not have to pay for that at all. Sending prayers your doctor is able to work it out. Watch a good movie or do something else nice for you!

Wow. Very unprofessional all around.
I hope they do get it sorted and your xrays to your surgeon in time.

@Hippie Chick I'm going to read my book
@luvcats So do I! Fall back I guess is that they give me another form and I go next door to the surgeons to the bigger xray lab and get them done again. Not so keen given radiation but hey if it has to be, so be it.

Update re Xrays - the surgeon finally received them 30 minutes before my appointment time.

My two week review with surgeon went well. I'm way ahead for two weeks. He said given this be very careful not to overdo it. As regards physio, he said to see my usual physio once to get an exercise plan in place and then work through that at home. My physio is having a shoulder replacement in the middle of June and won't be doing treatments until September so I'm seeing him on 11 June.

I asked when I could ride my exercycle and he said "now as tolerated". I've ridden it tonight just for 3 minutes and it was easy.

This morning I overdid it a little with a few chores around the house and so this afternoon I was limping. I've spent time this afternoon icing, resting and this evening it feels quite a lot better. Whew!

I took the waterproof dressing off yesterday as instructed by surgeon when I saw him on Wednesday. All looks good.

And the XRay saga continued - I discovered they'd overcharged me. I paid $50 by credit card on Tuesday. Then I got notification from my insurance company of what they claimed and what insurer had paid them - the difference being $35. So yet again I've been on the phone to them and they are processing a $15 refund.

How frustrating when you have to be on phone trying to resolve these issues. I have no patience & I find many of the people you are talking to to be confused as well.
But happy your appt went well & you took care of yourself when you overdid it a little. That's all it takes, a few hours or maybe one day of dialing back activity & some ice & you are good to go.

Last Monday at exactly 3 weeks post op I went to choir practice. To get to our rehearsal room we have to go downstairs. We don't have stairs at home. I could walk down normally without holding handrail and I could walk up normally holding handrail. If I try to go up without handrail my quads are painful just like the were post TKR.

My husband dropped me off as I don't want to drive yet. My plan was that if I got tired he'd come and get me at teabreak time. But I stayed for the entire rehearsal.

I can now get up from low chairs and the toilet without using my hands.

One of my choir friends is a retired physio and she got me to walk away from her and sure enough I am dropping my right shoulder if I don't concentrate. It isn't so bad if I focus on what I'm doing.

Excellent milestones indeed! :wowspring:

Four weeks post op and yesterday I walked upstairs without holding handrail. I could go down a week ago without handrail.

I have physio review of hip this morning along with assessment of my shoulders which have been painful since a couple of weeks before hip replacement. Left is worse than right but both are getting worse.

Oooh boy good luck with the shoulders....
