TKR Blondie 58's recovery thread

Hi @Heybondie58, I had my LTKR on May 5th. Went to the OS today and he going to do my RTKR July 21st. I have not had the problems you have had but I am just about crippled from this bone on bone. I will be so glad to get this over and done with. I don't blame you for putting it off as long as you can. It's hard enough with out all the other problems to go with it. Keep me in your prayers.

Thanks for asking how I'm doing. My flexion was 120 the last day of PT and my extension was 0 -- I think the flexion has improved a bit more on its own since then but, since I'm not in PT anymore, I haven't measured. I think I'm doing pretty well. Still some sore spots, tightness and swelling -- pain if I overdo. I still ice and elevate quite a bit. My IT band was stretched out of shape prior to the surgery and now is back in place and figuring out where it's supposed to be again. That causes some problems now and then but, overall, I do think it's getting better.

The good news is that I can walk normally without a limp now. I haven't been able to heel-toe walk for a very long time and it feels good. I will eventually have to have my right knee done too but can function with it at this point.

Hang in there and thanks for the update!

Hi Ann, yes, I managed to find your thread about your 'Shiny New Knee', so if you have loads of 'alerts' it's me lol!! Wow, you certainly do have a really positive attittude towards this second TKR & that was how I went into this with the mindset of 'Well, it has to be done & I have to put in the effort, you can't expect the OS to put in a prosthetic knee & then go off merrily & expect it to function perfectly all by itself, that's not how this works!!' That's not to say I don't have bad days by myself when I get down (& even weep sometimes!!) despairing of ever being 'normal' again , because I do, we wouldn't be human otherwise, it's the frustration of things not happening as fast as we want them to & the Doctors (bless them!!) not being honest about the exact extent of the recovery from this major traumatic event!! :bawl:It may be a slower path this time around for you Ann, but I gave up worrying about ROM, flexion/extension etc; weeks ago after reading some of the lovely posts on here & the support & confidence it's given me has been invaluable. Even when I was letting the scar infection heal & resting up I was still reading if not contributing, it was a 'blip' but it really got me down. Now onwards & upwards, as they say!! Yes, we still have to ice, elevate, do our exercises, manage the stairs, go for walks etc; etc; but i've come to the conclusion that many have along this journey, that the knee is the Boss, listen to it, treat it well & it will respond (eventually for some of us!!) & just 'go with the flow' & stop obssessing about the 'numbers'?!! I do know what you mean about the other knee feeling 'broken' tho' Ann, that's exactly the words I used to my OS last time I saw him & he said it's very common for the other one to suffer drastically & rapidly with the first TKR. :holysheep:

Says she who went out to the Supermarket last night,(I prefer to go when it's quieter?), forgot her crutch & coudln't be bothered to go back fo it (I walk up & down the 15 stair flight outside my flat in the Communal Hall without it now to get the post etc;), regretted it bitterly on the walk back (operated knee was feeling 'heavy' & a tad wobbly, other one just bone on bone as usual & left ankle swollen & on fire) Another lesson learned, as I type this laid up resting watching tv, icing/heating/elevating etc; , all the usual lol, just for being, well, plain stooopid!! :bignono:

@Kansas Teacher @Bilbo @Angel1978, lovely to hear from you all, & Roxie, you seem to be doing extremely well, you've put in the work as I have read & it's certainly paid off-you're 2 wks behind me as I recall, so you're about 7/8 wks now & you've really done amazingly, your ROM is about as good as it gets, I still have a lot of internal bruising in & around my knee which is impeding my bend, but i'm not in the least bothered about it now, as I know i'll get there eventually, always think positive, it's all we have!! Btw, i'm intrigued, can I please ask what an IT band is, im baffled lol? :what:

Bilbo, many congrats on getting your sugery date for the other TKR, you & I both know it's going to be a tough road, but we also know it has to be done, we don't want it but we NEED it & you'll be in my thoughts, i'll be counting the days with you!! :fingersx:

Angel, thanks for your kind words, I hope you're recovering from your partial ok, & thinking of you too!!

Much love to you all

@Heyblondie58 I did okay with my partial until December 18 2014 and then it started locking pop lock caused me a lot of pain. And I went back to the OS and well needless to say I had to have a revision on March 2, 2015. But I never would've got my revision if it had not been for the sight. Xxxxxx

Sue, The IT (ileotibial) band is a thick band of fiber that runs from the outside of your hip down to the outside of your knee and then curves around to the front of the bottom of your knee. When I was at my OS for my 6-week check-up, I told him it was still bothering some and, he pulled up my old pre-surgery x-rays where you could see how the IT band had been pulled over and was rubbing against my knee where it shouldn't have been. He said it had been stretched out as my knee basically collapsed onto itself due to lack of cartilage. Then he showed me the new x-ray he had taken that day that shows the IT band back in place perfectly. But, he said it would take some time for it to "shrink" back to its normal size and "figure out what it's supposed to be doing!" I have seen some improvement over the past week. I think there's a link on here somewhere that explains it much better than I just did! I still have internal and external swelling and tightness too in spite of my good ROM and will be glad when that's gone. It's more annoying than painful. I have one little area to the right of my incision that is still a bit discolored that causes twinges of pain now and then but I asked him about that too and he said that was exactly where a major inner cut was made and my soft tissue has a lot of healing to do there.

So yes, I am doing well but I am still dealing with little issues along the way as I recover. I guess we'll all know we're truly healed when these little issues are finally laid to rest once and for all!

I am glad to hear that you are moving along in your recovery too. Wish it were shorter but it just isn't and we should all be more patient people eventually with all the practice we are having!

Hi @Kansas Teacher,

Have just Googled 'Iliotibial band syndrome', you actually explained it extremely well, & it sounds very painful indeed, very common in runners, i'm assuming you were one in a former life Roxie? :running:. I'm glad it seems to be settling down, lets hope it stays that way? :fingersx:

I know what you mean about niggling little issues, I never had a single bruise externally post op or since, all my bruising was internal which made the swelling that much more obvious, my operated knee (as someone else mentioned somewhere) was, literally 3 times the size of the other one (& that's swollen!!) It has gone down some with constant icing & a lot of rest/painklillers etc; still at 9 wks, but I have various lump, bumps & areas of swelling that are palpable. I think like you say it's just doing more of the same & patience, but we WILL get there!! :yes!:

QUESTION: If anyone else out there is reading & can identify....I have had (at times agonising!!) a tearing sensation just under the main incision, the only way I can describe it is it's like there's another scar under the main one & when i've rested for even a short time, as soon as I bend the knee it feels like this 'other' scar is bursting open, & ive had this since day 1. My OS says it's all the damaged tissues & nerve endings trying to repair themselves & that it's perfectly normal, but it really scares me sometimes it's so painful, I really feel like my incision is going to rip open one day!! Anyone else experience this please?!! :banghead:

Best wishes to all.....

@Heyblondie58 Hey Sue. Thanks for checking in on me :) It has been a very busy month with a few ups and lots of downs (relative funeral) so I was not on my computer much and not doing my exercises as religiously as I should have. Getting a bit discouraged but my physiotherapist indicates I am progressing well. It is 2 months now and my ROM is only 93/4. I still have so much inflammation in the knee so bending is the real challenge. I started last week walking our dogs (with my husband) every morning (no cane or walking stick) and actually I go pretty fast for about a 15 - 20 minut

....15 - 20 minutes walk. I guess my discouragement is not in getting around (because I do that with ease) it with the inflammation and bend of the knee.
Love reading all the posts coming in. It is great therapy! Blessings and smiles

Hi there,

So sorry to read about your relatives' funeral Pookie, i'm very sorry for your loss, I hope it hasn't held back your recovery, I know only too well how stressful life events can?

A good tip tho' for those of you having problems with the normal PT exercise for flexion/bending due to swelling at the back of the knee: :thumb:

A very useful tip I was given by my new PT at the Knee Club that I go to on a Monday afternoon. Instead of the dreaded 'heel slides' I now use a 'resistance band' (I used one for my ankle when I was having intense Physio for that 5 yrs ago?). You can get them from your PT, they look like a huge thick broken elastic band, & you lie resting up on your bed/the floor etc; whichever is more comfortable, then slide the middle of it under the foot of the operated knee, wrap the ends tightly round both hands & pull the knee (against the resistance of the band) upwards & towards your chest (don't force it, just as far as it will go), it should be mildly uncomfortable, but not into pain mode. Stop, hold for 5 seconds, then gently extend the leg (still with the band around the foot) & lower it down flat again. Repeat 5 times 3/4 times a day or just whenever you feel able, again let the knee be your guide I gave up with the knee slides at around 3 wks when I realised I wasn't getting anywhere & found wall lunges actually easier for a couple of weeks until my PT came up with this & i'm finding it's helping my bending tremendously, :dancy: try it if you're not getting anywhere with the 'slides', you never know!! :fingersx:

Love & best wishes

I can relate to your lack of bend. It does get discouraging, doesn't it? Today I listened to my favorite music when I'm angry, followed by upbeat songs from the same artist...I've been rather upbeat since!

Sorry about your loss. I'm still waiting for a date from Arlington cemetery for my dad (who passed away in March!) and am so happy we still don't have a date so I'll be ever more mobile!

I do this with a rolled up beach towel. Also with the same rolled up towel, lay on back, good leg bent for support! put towel
behind thigh of surgical leg, hold towel on both sides and lift leg and let gravity do the bending, max of two minutes or until it hurts. Hope I explained well enough.

I like both of these exercise even if they haven't helped my ROM. LOL

I totally can relate to your lack of bend. It makes me sad. Sometimes weeks vary I can get higher than other. But here recently I have been going down and makes me sad. But I know that it will come to us. Just have to be patient and hang in there.

Xxx we all are in this together. Best of luck!!

Thanks everyone for your support. Trying the band exercises right now. Just to clarify do you mean pull your leg up with the band as if you're putting on a pair of pants laying down?

This may seem like an odd question but what actually makes the inflammation go away or go down ?

Inflammation and swelling is your body reacting to injury. Swelling is liquid protection error inflammation is body fighting an infection or an invasive injury. I think so anyway but thinking isn't my forte

I've had to get medicane to get it go away. And icing more often helps..: But we must take it a day at time. It's hard for me as well as all of us.

I was told swelling is last 6 months or more xxxx

@Pookie2015

Hiya,

Yes, pull your knee up towards your chest as if you were pulling on underwear or trousers on laying down, in one smooth motion, i.e. just bend it but upwards as well naturally against the resistance of the band?

@Angel1978

@Legin You are both correct, swelling (especially oedema), is a natural reaction to the trauma of a joint/bone etc; & is the bodys way of trying to protect that joint/bone by cushioning it resulting in the swelling & bruising. :iagree:

I'm not entirely sure that you can get rid of it yourself, but icing, elevation & rest can do a lot towards reducing it temporarily until it decides to subside naturally. :ice: My OS also told me that it would take at LEAST 6 months for it all to settle down, that it takes up to a year to heal completely, but that swelling could still flare up at any time in the future, especially after doing too much-sounds pretty depressing when you look at the facts, but at least we don't have that chronic' bone on bone' grinding, burning, agonising pain that's necessitated this surgery in the first place & I feel as if i've got half of my life back already-here's to the next chapter now, fingers crossed, i'm speaking to my OS' Secretary on Monday, I have to get this other RTKR in motion, I cant bear the pain & grinding any longer?!! :fingersx:

Firstly shocked me correct? I think once you start this journey the, completion of it grows stronger. Good luck in getting other sorted.

As my OS said 6 months to year. Each day I have swelling to. But also if I am on feet a lot it swells more. Good luck on other knee... Mine be in August... Not sure date yet... Xxx

Everyone's swelling (visible and invisible) goes down at an individual pace. For many of us the worst of it is done by 12 weeks but as others have said, some will linger for months. Ice(gel pacs, ice machine, whatever method you use) and elevation help a lot.
Glad your doc is very up front with you @Heyblondie58 :thumb:
