I had the same experience with hip # 2. Pain meds (oxycodone) worked really well for hip # 1 and I took them for about 10 days including a tapered half dose at the end, BUT I hated the way I felt on them in addition to the constipation and brain fog. The meds didn't seem to totally eliminate the pain this time for hip#2 but it was certainly tolerable and I did need them. I am off them at the end of week 2 and just taking tylenol now . I think everyone reacts differently to pain meds , and the length of time you're on them seems to differ vastly as well.
I have written here that I had different expectations and immediate rewards for hip # 1 and was thrilled with each step forward. I am impatient with hip # 2 and expect process too soon. I am following someone's advice here to view my progress weekly and not daily. I just finished week 2 and already everything hurts less, there is much less swelling , better walking (with a walker still until my gait is smoother) and stamina is increasing. The emotional part of hip# 2 is the impatience to finally have it over with as, like you, this has been going on with me ( pre-and post surgery) for a year now. Fortunately, this is a busy time of year to distract us and it is too cold where I live to be going out although I did walk on my block with my PT the other day. I just noticed today that I was able to bend my knee more easily while walking which I was very excited about because I haven't been walking well for over a year.
My advice echos everyone else's here: get plenty of rest in the beginning and don't try to push yourself. Your body has had a trauma and needs time to recover. Eat well with plenty of protein. I followed BS activity guidelines, resting most of the day and taking short walks down my hallway every hour or two to feel like I was exercising. I did a lot of foot pumps, iced and elevated all the time while laying on the sofa. I did need help getting on/off the sofa/bed from my husband but now I am able to do it myself. YAY.
I listen to books on tape at night to help with sleep and am binge watching lots of shows that have 10+ seasons if I wake up at night. I am more comfortable in bed now though than I was with hip # 1 so I am happy about that. I get chunks of sleep and if I fall asleep during the day, my husband just leaves me wherever I am and unplugs the phone.
I don't know about you but a lot about hip #1 recovery is a blur even though it was March .
Let me know how you're doing. I also am following hippies who are 1-2 weeks ahead of me for their success stories. All in All, I have improved so much in these first 2 weeks but my energy is just not there.
