Feeling pretty down today, feeling very tearful and sorry for myself, is this normal after 5 weeks? My arms are so painful it is really getting to me, haven't slept for days, wake up every hour still, an have to move position. I get up in the end as i think whats the point? It is coming to the point that i dread going to bed! I go and see my surgeon tomorrow so will speak to him about it see what he has to say. Have been on the internet and i am obviously not the only one suffering with this. It is so frustrating as my hip is doing so well, i can walk quite far now but can't because of my arms.I have tried sticks but really don't feel safe on them yet.:tantrum: I shouldn't moan really but I guess we can't be happy all the time:boohoo:Hope seeing my xray and my doctor will cheer me up and make me more positive tomorrow. :)

Good Morning Lesley, Must be in the air because for some reason I feel the same.. I'm gonna chuck it up to the weather change.. Cold and dreary.. Try going to youtube and do a search for make me laugh videos and see what you can up with.. I like to listen to music when I feel down.. I usually start with some thing mellow like Pink Floyd or a little Zeppelin, then I work my way into something modern.. It picks me up.. hope you feel better and at 5 weeks your about to make the great transition to Wellness.. I think I been trying to much lately and I'm gonna back off.. That way I dont feel so fatigued.. Hope you feel better and try to laugh today.. Watch the movie Brides Maids.. That will make you laugh out loud forsure.. Have a great day and LAUGH:spin::heehee::rotfl:

It must be the weather because I'm feeling the blues all the way over here too.

I am sorry to read that you guys are feeling down. I certainly agree with Bigozzie9er about the power of music. Whenever I go walking on my own I always take my iPod loaded with fav songs.

As my pix shows, my fav artist is Darren Hayes (former Savage Garden). I find it very uplifting not just to listen to his songs but to sing along with them as well. As I concentrate on getting the lyrics right and giving a great performance for my 60,000 imaginary fans, my mood always lifts. Singing along makes all the difference for me.

Maybe it is the weather, cold, dark and wet again in North Wales today.
Lol Ron, relaxing led zepplin, more like head banging, thats my fella steves favourite group. I love motown and soul and I sing my head off to that. I watched Ice age 3 , my grandson lent it to me, I laughed so much, it is a tonic.:rotfl:
I feel better today, actually managed a bit of sleep and didn't wake up so much, hope this is is a regular thing now, fingers crossed.
Yeah know what you mean Mike' I took my music into hospital and you have to remember that everyone can hear you when you have head phones on hehe. :happydance:
Go to see surgeon later today, have xray etc, everything should be ok I feel fine, just want to know how long I have to adhere to bending restrictions.
I really have to learn how to be more patient, I am not used to sitting round doing nothing. I learnt how to chill going coarse fishing, haven't been able to do that for a few years either but I look forward to next year when I am fit and healthy and can go again.
Have a great day everyone, or a good night sleep. :) Lesley

What can I say Lesley...

"Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you have never been hurt and live like it's heaven on Earth" - Mark Twain.

Post op blues are extremely common, it is an acknowledged medical symptom post surgery and goes hand in hand with sleep deprivation.

Go with the flow, not easy when you are feeling down, but it will get better.. Hang in there :)

Distraction is one of the best way to try and cope.. Comedy movies, yes, youtube funnies, Come visit BoneSmart, we will keep you company and cheer you up and try and make you laugh.. [Bonesmart.org] 9 days post op, new hip in and I feel good

Hi everyone, just got back from seeing my surgeon Mr Philips in Oswestry, he is so lovely, gives you plenty of time, doesn't rush you at all and makes sure you have all your questions answered.
My xray is great he was very happy with it. Have 2 screws which I didn't know I had , ceramic cup, plastic liner and titanium stem.
No infection, all clear.
I can go swimming when I feel I am ready, said it's good exercise after a hip op also could help my arms.
Can wean myself off the crutches when I feel ready, so ok to hobble round my flat, should hopefully find my arms will improve, if not go and see my Dr and maybe get physio.
Can drive when I feel able to do an emergency stop without pain.
Have to observe 90 degree rule below the knee for 12 weeks, lower down by my ankle and the floor for 6-9 mths, surprised by that but he knows best.
I can also lay on my operated side, when I can without it feeling tender, that could help my arm so might try that soon.
He was really pleased with my scar and said the swelling at the top of my leg should go down in time that it is perfectly normal.
See him again in September 2013 if no problems, which fingers crossed shouldn't have.
So all in all a very positive meeting and a lot happier today.
It's so nice to have people that understand when you are feeling a bit blue, I am very positive person usually but as you said Poppet it is a recognised condition and we can't smile all the time.:)
My man tries to be understanding but just feels so bad because he can't make the pain go away but a hug helps a lot sometimes.:console2:
So that was my day my BoneSmart friends.
So there you go 5 weeks post op and everything is looking good:happydance:

What a fantastic result Lesley!!

Well done you. So nice that you feel like you were truly listened to and came away feeling that your surgeon really understood where you were at and what you had been through. I am thrilled for you. Did he mention cracking a bottle of champagne to celebrate?

Best regards

Mike

LOL Mike you might have a good idea there, my hip deserves a celebration it's been so good and ,I might just help it out as i'm sure it couldn't manage a whole bottle on it's own hehe:cheers:.
Slept on my operated leg for a bit last night, I managed for a while but then became too tender but hey it's a good start.
Slept off and on, as usual still having to change positions but a bit more relaxed about my leg dislocating now after seeing my lovely surgeon.
Goin to trying walking round my flat without crutches and see how it goes, (the boss said I could) as long as i don't limp, will try it out later. Ive got to get off these crutches as i don't want damage in my arms, he did warn me this could happen, Can cause arthritis, dont want that i am not having it haha:beg:
Going to be a lovely day today so i am going for a walk see how far i can get(depends on my arms not my hip):happydance:
Its a lovely morning in North Wales today and the fresh air is calling out to me.
Have a great day all you hippies. :yay:
Hey how turned the sun off it's gone black out there now and raining how dare it? :heehee:
Lesley

What a fantastic poet you are meatfree... Thank you :)

So neat! I love when people can express their diary in rhyme!

Glad you like my poems, have always been able to write, they just pop in my head at strange times lol and if they make someone smile all the better. I have started writing a book but haven't been able to type much with my arms but it will come.
I went for a long walk yesterday, walking fine, so nice to be out. I live in a lovely welsh village, well it is really a town but you wouldn't believe it the size of it. It has a lot of history it's an interesting place and is so friendly too. As I was saying I walked for at least half an hour and really enjoyed it and saw a few locals and they told me how much better I looked. I also went to see my friends the llamas and we have an alpaca there too, Ethel, Gertie and Cocoa. They let you hand feed them and are so cute, you have to get ready to duck sometimes as they do tend to spit yuck!!!! haha
My arms hurt when I got back but who cares was worth it to be out.
After I got back i decided to try and walk round without my crutches to see if this would help my shoulders and arms. Well I wouldn't call it walking more a waddle, felt like quacking :heehee: . My surgeon said I could start weaning myself off the crutches so it must be ok.
* Advice my bonesmart friends* is this gait ok or is it best to wait until i can walk better, what do you think?
Steves face was funny as i went in the kitchen to get a coffee he had made me and i just picked it up and walked out, he shouted hey don't you want your crutches.
I found my shoulders and arms weren't as painful last nite, I took 200mg ibruprofen and actually slept whoohooo
Things are on the up up up:yay:
I have had few surgeries in the past and have found that 6 weeks seems to be a bench mark and i think this instance is going to be th same.
Going for my hair done today, that will help me feel better as all you ladies well know. I feel ready to sit in a chair for a bit and it is the right the height because the OT put a piece of tape on my crutch at the right height i have to observe, which was a very good idea saves you carrying a tape measure everywhere, you just put your crutch by it. So anyway i will be a new woman.:happydance:
I know I have a lot of internal healing to do but feeling better in yourself and being able to get around a bit makes life so much more enejoyable.
The sky is getting lighter now and I can see blue skies, so another nice day, have to make the most of them this time of year don't we my British hippies? and veryone else that has winter approaching around the globe.
Will go for my walk(with my crutches, i am not that brave yet) before i go to the hairdressers (thats in the village too) so I can rest while i am pampered.
Have a happy happy day all you lovely bonesmart hippies:) LESLEY X

Hi Lesley. Glad to hear the report from the doc is good.

As for the waddle....I assume you mean something resembling a limp. You don't want a limp. Limping is not good. So you continue using assistive devices to make sure you don't limp. When you can walk without the limp, you're ready to solo.

In the meantime, have you tried transitioning to a cane? This would give you the necessary support, but it's a lot kinder to your arms than the crutches.

Also, this is not the time to skimp on pain meds. They will help you make the transition to walking without assistance. I don't mean drug yourself up so you can walk for three miles. I simply mean make sure you are taking enough meds to take the edge off of pain sufficiently to get you past the limp. Once you can walk completely unassisted without a limp, then cut back the pain meds...it's a good way to gauge whether you still need pain meds.

Does that help? It's so much trial and error, and only you know exactly how you feel. But honestly, every time you describe walking with your crutches, MY arms hurt!!!! :)

Sharon

Hi Sharon thanks for the advice. I know I am trying to rush this but the pain in my arms and now my hands is just getting worse and worse. I have tried all the painkillers going and nothing seems to really help other than ibuprofen but even that not that much. Rang my GP and he said not much that can be done other than get off the crutches asap and try the swimmng and come and see him if I need to for maybe PT. I am going to go swimming soon and hope that will help me, I love swimming used to do a mile at least 3 times a week, low impact on my hip and helping my arms and hands. I have tried a cane and pain just shot straight up my arm couldn't use it . I am so frustrated as my hip feels great and is ready to gogogo :loll:I know you are right and I shouldn't be waddling after all I am not a duck! I will continue with the crutches this week and see how my gait is and fingers crossed it improves so I can get off these THINGS!!! GRRR
I read of so many hippies that have given the crutches or sticks up soon after surgery and it is so frustrating for me but my case is a lot different but hey ho I will get there in the end. Have a great weekend everyone LESLEY :happydance:

Hi Lesley

Great report from your OS.. Sorry you are having arm issues with the crutches.. did you have a walker ? I. Know you probably wouldn't want to use one, but maybe to prevent an adverse gait happening, this maybe an option?

Love the sound of your Welsh village, SO and I spent some of our happiest holidays in Wales, retracing my Father's birth place..

Funny story..

SO wanted to hear someone speaking Welsh.. So we went to a Pub.. no one at the bar, so we went into a sitting room where they served tea and there was a gentleman there... We thought, this looks good, he is sure to speak Welsh.. We struck up a conversation, next minute he said, I don't like the British and dislike Australians even more, lol... we drove further into northern Wales into the Snowdonia mountains and ended up at a farm B € B with the most delightful Welsh speaking family... still friends to this day.. 20 years ago!

Grasping at straws for you, Lesley. Are you sure the cane you tried was properly adjusted for your height? If it wasn't, that might be why you had so much pain with it. You sure need an alternative to crutches asap!

Sharon

Hi Poppet, no I haven't got a walker and I would use one if I had but no point in getting one now.

LOL some of the older Welsh people can be very rude and don't like outsiders and I am glad you met some friendly people that changed your opinion of us. Snowdonia is a lovely place and can't wait to go walking there again!:)

Hi Sharon, I'm sorry I make you wince everytime you think of me on my crutches, bless you. I have a bit of improvement in my arms as I have been using the furniture to walk round but my hands are still sore and swollen.

I actually managed to take my dog for a walk this morning(only a short one and with my friend) I put a belt round my waist and hooked his lead on it and it worked great, he knows there is something wrong and didn't pull me, he was so good. I just love being out in the fresh air it makes me feel so much better.:happydance:

Six weeks post-op now , my how the weeks fly. My wound is brilliant and has healed sooo well, will post another picture up, the difference is amazing in 4 weeks, still can't believe how well it has done after being cut twice in 5 mths.

I took 2 paracetamol and ibuprofen and slept ok on and off last night. Managed to sleep on my operated side for a bit longer too and I think that is helping my arms and shoulders.

I am still not ready to give the crutches up, it is so frustrating that i can't but I can't walk yet without limping so I need to be patient a while longer. Am going to go swimming in a week or so am really looking forward to that, have missed it nearly as much as the walking, that will chill me out.:)

It is great to read how all the other hippies are doing that were near my surgery date and it proves that we all progress at different times and ways. It also proves we shouldn't compare ourselves to anyone else either, as we all have different cases and we all control pain and healing in different ways too.

The nights are drawing in now and the clocks go back an hour this weekend so it is going to get darker and darker earlier. Yuck I hate the winter but hopefully I will be a new person and progressed loads by the NEW YEAR. So NEW YEAR NEW LIFE!!!

Have a great day everyone or a good restful sleep whatever the case may be
