Katlover13 last night I posted here, but for some reason, there was an error so here goes again, I have never read JD Robb but I did search the authors....and yes...I think I will like his books! 50 shades is not a mystery series.. But a rather raunchy, racy, sleezy series that most people in my area were reading. They were good but extremely racy. Something I usually do mot read.
I've been reading some books by Lisa Gardner! I like the books that have the same main characters in them , have you ever read any of the books with the character Alex Cross? I think the author is Patterson.
I was ore after PT and continues to be all night! She as moving my leg around like it was a tree trunk! Even though they iced my hip after therapy. I iced twice during the evening. It was funny because while I was there, I met a woman who had knee replacement the same day, same hosp. , same floor, same OS, and same at home physical therapist! She eased some of my fears concerning knee replacement.

I went out to dinner with some of my lady friends. We get together monthly for dinner!! It was a new German rest. Even though my friend called and requested a table with chairs, and they said no problem, that restaurant does not have tables with chairs, it has benches! I managed by sitting on the end!

Today will probably be unventilated! They are talking about show...ugh! Maybe I'll try to venture out to target today! I'm curious as to how I will do! Have you ever used the motorized cart available in some stores? I'm not going to, but I wonder how that is?

Enjoy your visit with your brother!

Please DO NOT use the motorized cart! I have heard from more than one source that they do not work well with hip patient's restrictions and have caused dislocations!
I love Lisa Gardner and James Patterson is one of my favorite authors. He also writes the Woman's Murder Club series. He also writes the Maximum Ride books which are geared towards teenagers but are still entertaining light reading. JD Robb is Nora Roberts psudonym for the In Death series.
Sounds like fun going out to dinner with lady friends. I don't often get to do things like that. My husbands care was taking up all of my time and between moving and trying to manage all that had to be done this past year there wasn't much time for anything extra. I hope this year will be different, there is nothing so much fun as a girls night out!
Glad you had the opportunity to chat with the lady who had the knee replacement. It' so much better to talk in person with someone who has been there.
That reminds me of something that happened a few months ago at work. A woman came in to ask directions. She was limping badly anI I said to her, "You walk just like me.". She started to tell me that she was going to have her hip replaced the following week and she was scared to death! I was able to tell her my story and hopefully put her mind at ease somewhat. I have always regretted that I didn't get some contact information from her. Serendipity ?
I hope your PT doesn't keep hurting you so much. Does it feel like its just sore muscles from using them more than usual?

[Bonesmart.org] 2nd Hip Done! Time to enjoy life! Sue with your take on electric scooters (carts). I had a small three wheel scooter that I used in the house the first 6 weeks of my recovery from my hip replacement. I had all the usual restrictions along with only 20% weight bearing. I used the scooter because I was not only recovering but still had a semi-invalid hubby to care for. If I had had to walk every time it was necessary to get up, I would have been in overdoer's agony for most of the first part of my recovery. I also used the electric carts at the grocery and Wal-Mart until I got my knees replaced 11 months after my hip. Never had a hint of any problem.

Following the 90 degree rule is more a matter of paying attention than anything. Also if you go slightly past 90 degrees on occasion and gently, there's not much likelihood of dislocation. And keep in mind that a lot of things we've heard turn out, upon investigation, to be extremely unreliable information.

Thanks for the information and your take on the motorized cart. It was just something I wondered about. If I venture out, it's to check my walking stamina and independence. I probably would ram into something and know everything down! I have not been on my own since my surgery and I really want to. Tomorrow, we are supposed to get a snow storm (actually tonight) so I want to try to do this today. In fact, I'm worried about going to PT tomorrow if it is bad out. I use a cane, but if there is snow on the ground, I'm going to use my walker so that I will have a little more to hold onto. I would just want to die if I fell! I do not know what I would do!!!!

It was great to chat with the knee lady. She had such a positive attitude. If I see her again, I'm going to tell her about Bonesmart! I have heard so many horror stories about knees, but she really said it was not that bad. I know everyone is different, but it sure was nice to hear that it was not that bad.

Sue, we like the same books! GREAT!! I have not read the Woman's Murder Club mysteries. I think I'll look into them. Do you read books or do you use an e-reader?

Have a great day!

Mostly I download then on to my I-Pad but I still enjoy the feel of a good old fashioned book! The library is one of my favorite places. I also get books on CD at the library and listen to them going back and forth to work. They are great when I drive to visit my kids, too. The one thing I miss about using the e-books is that you can't pass them around.

I love the feeling of getting out by myself. Almost every time I say I'm going to go somewhere my husband says he wants to come along. Sometimes I just need to get out alone! I was SO glad when my OS said I could drive after two weeks! maybe it's selfish but with my husband not beig well and my mother in law with macular degeneration living with us sometimes I want to go somewhere that I won't feel like a caregiver.

We will probably be getting the same storm as you are getting tomorrow. I guess it's good that we don't have to go out tomorrow but I still hope to escape at some point. Even to get out and do mall laps. The walker might be a good idea for getting to PT. I wouldn't be so upset to fall but I'm scared to death of dislocating! No setbacks allowed!

Had a good time with my brother today. He gave me a tour of the place he works, they test all kinds of appliances there and it was really interesting. The time I was gone from home was only about two hours but when I got home I had eight orders to process and a couple of quotes to do in my e-mail. That's more then I have done the whole time I've been off! Not complaining, it's great to be busy.

I have heard many good stories about knees. Our neighbor had hers done in early November and was doing well when they left for Their FL home just after Christmas. There was a man in PT in the hospital who had his knee surgery the same day as us. He was doing very well and was walking as well as I was. As you say, everyone is different.

Take care if the weather is nasty tomorrow.

Katlover13

I can understand why you need your own space, you certainly have your hands full being a 'caregiver' but it is very important for you to recover... You are still very early weeks in your second THR :)

bottomshollow I'm glad to hear how well the scooter worked out for you. The first person to tell me they were not good was the woman who did my PT last year. The people at the place where I was going for PT all seemed to have that idea of them. Perhaps they had a patient who was careless and dislocated on one. It's good to know they are not so bad. Ever since last year I have assumed the people I see riding them were not hip replacement patients.

I am assuming these scooters are supplied by the stores?

Don't see many here in OZ.

Mbone, we have a thread in the social room that discusses books.. have you seen it? Might be interesting for you :)

Katlover13 I can understand you needing some "you" time! My trip to venture was exhausting! I used a cart and that was difficult. When pushing, I was limping....when leaning...my back hurt! It was hard to walk with the cane and push the cart at the same time! I did manage to walk around the whole store and up and down many aisles! It felt good to be out, but tiring at the same time. When I got home I prepared dinner, so needless to say, I was pooped! I iced and elevated and rested!

The trip made me realize that I am not ready to go back to work and walk around a school building!

Tomorrow my husband will work from home so he can take me to PT if its bad out. I'm afraid of dislocation also! I hear it is extremely painful! My daughter and I are also planning on visiting a banquet hall for her wedding. Of course this is weather permitting.

I think PT Is having me use muscles that have not been used and stretching things that are in need of stretching.

Do you have anything planned for the weekend? Hope we both do not get a lot of snow!

Mary

Poppet many of the stores here supply moterized scooters. There are usually 4-5 at the entrence of stores like Walmart and most grocery stores. They seem to get a lot of use and I'm sure there are people that would not be able to shop if they were not available.
I have really been wondering why the PT facility I went to last year was so against them. When I go to PT Monday (Different place), I am going to ask if they have ever heard anything about them.

Thanks for that info.. interesting.. we don't seem to cater for that here. :)

Katlover13 how was your day today? I swear, PT does me in! It makes me tired and sore! I took a nap when I got back. Do you find yourself tired and sore at the end of the day! I really loose my stamina as the day goes on. Are you a little stiff upon getting up after sitting a while? I am! I certainly hope my stamina comes back. Do you just use your cane all day or do you swap between the walker and the cane?

We did not get as much snow as was predicted! Did you?

Hi Mbone; Today was quiet because it was a treatment day for my husband and the weather we were expecting kept me from planning much. I did go out in the afternoon to sign up for a membership to use the local high school pool. We didn't get as much nasty weather as was predicted either. I did get the sheets washed. Wa-HOO! Clean sheet night!
The only time I use the cane any more is in public. I kept losing it in the house because I would get up and forget to take it. I did take it today when the parking lot could have been icy the extra stability seemed like a good idea. If I sit for longer than an hour I'm stiff for the first couple of steps. I think maybe I'm just weird. Everyone on this forum keeps saying rest and slow down but I have a lot of energy and have honestly not been tired or in pain even though I am keeping busy and exercising a lot. It was the same last time. Maybe it will hit me one of these days but I have to think it already would have. Sometimes I hesitate to post about how good I feel.
Do you think your PT is helping? Some of the things they give me to do are a little hard for the first couple of reps but than they get easier as I go. It seems like I have to warm the muscles up some and get them used to doing certain movements. Certain exercises feel like they are doing a lot of good. Do you have any that you particularly like? The ones they have me do on a stair stepper seem good.
Doing anything fun for the weekend?

Katlover13 I'm sorry to hear that your husband is sick ! I do hope he is doing okay! When you walk unassisted...do you still have a limp? I can waddle around if I had too, but I have a penguins gait and I don't want to do that. My arms hurt from using the cane. I asked the Physical therapist if I was on par with the norm for THR at 4 1/2 weeks and she said I was ahead of the norm. She gave me some new things to do at the facility. I like the machine that's like a stepper only you sit and the one where you lie on your back Abd push with your feet. It feels good to stretch those muscles. At home I like to lie with my pillow between my legs and rollbfrom side to side! She also has me balancing and stretching thr leg using a resistance band. I think it is great that you are progressing so quickly. I have never had pain above a 3 , most of the time I have no pain at all! Now it's more of a discomfort tan actual pain! They say ice, but can I use heat? My incision is healed! It sounds like you are an avid exerciser. Maybe tat my problem,,,I do not exercise enough ,,,I'm goining to try o be more diligent in doing my exercises. I had a bit of a sad moment last night! I sometimes till get a little depressed! After PT and going to a banquet hall and walking around there... I was pretty tired and disgusted that my stamina was so low!

I'm impressed that you did laundry. Do you need to go up or down steps? Mine is 13 steps down. I've been down there twice with my home PT but have not been down since.
The only thing I have planned is getting my hair done! The grey is really peeking out Abd has not been cut or close to three months! I'm looking forward to it ( but I worry about washroom)! My husband bought me this portsble foam toilet riser... But what happens when you sit on foam...... It smashes down!!! So it did not do any ood. We returned it and bought another hard plastic one. But can you see me walking into this little hair salon carting my box with a picture of a toilet on it??? I think I will just take my chances. If need be I'll just be careful and lean onto the sink to get up and d own!

We are also going o look at some other place for weddings.

How about you?

Oh, I'm sorry, I am so bad! Sitting here laughing at the mental picture of you marching in to the beauty salon with your toilet seat box! So funny! But not so funny if it were to become an issue. I have been sure to use the washroom before I leave to do anything. I know public restrooms around here have handicapped stalls that would work fine but I don't like public rest rooms at the best of times.

My laundry area is in the basement and there are 13 stairs down. I have been doing laundry since week two and only waited that long because my husband would have a kiniption when I suggested going downstairs. I guess he doesn't remember that we lived in a colonial home last year and I had to go up and down the stairs several times a day. This ranch has been easy! For the last several days I have been taking the stairs very slowly for exercise. I try to work the muscles by taking each step slowly with no jerking motions both up and down. Same principal as a stair stepper I would think. I have always enjoyed exercising and the past few years have been difficult because there was so little I could do. It is probably easier for me to get into a routine because it is something I used to always do and it makes me happy to be getting back to it. I have a long list of "can I do this now?" for my OS at my 6 week appointment on Tuesday.

My husband is not really sick in the usual way. He has chronic kidney disease and has to have dialysis treatments three times a week. He is usually pretty exhausted on the treatment days and we don't plan to do much.

It seems like it would be hard not to have bad moments when you are exhausted from PT. Also looking for banquet halls would be somewhat bittrersweet. It was very difficult for me when my boys went to college and again when I realized they would never be coming back to live in my home again. I am so proud of their independence and the lives they have made for themselves but I still miss them so much!

Today we are going to get several errands done like shopping and such. Some time this weekend I am going to put my living room/dining room back in order. My dining room table is shoved over to one side and the recliner I use is next to it. I have an surge protector on top of the table for laptop and various things and metal file organizers with my reference materials for work. A cozy little work station that I will no longer need as I am returning to work on Monday.

I hope you enjoy having your hair done, it always feels good to "correct" the gray out! I will probably do mine at home Sunday. I used to be a hairdresser way back in the late 70's and can still buy professional products at the beauty supply. Before the surgery I had it cut fairly short so I wouldn't have to mess with it much.

Sorry about getting so long winded! I'm on my PC instead of the I-Pad and it's so much easier to type that I got carried away!

Hi Sue, you are right it is easier to type on the computer, I'm using the ipad now! It's good to laugh at my visual of carrying in a toilet seat... I meant it to be funny. Right now, I'm sitting at the salon while my daughter is having her hair done. We always go together! The toilet seat is in my car...just in case!!!!

I have a membership at a Planet Fitness , which is a relatively cheep facility. However, I'm lazy when it comes to exercising. I asked about the Exercycle and the PT said not yet. Before the surgery that is what I did, but it got to the point that I couldn't lift my leg over the Exercycle!

I understand dialysis... My father went on it at 88years old. He was on it for 4 years , when he died at 93 years old. I would have to take him And bring him home! It was tough on an old man!!! He was so weak afterwards and my mom was not much better!!! She also died at 93.

My house is a mess!!! Hip aids everywhere!!! Stations set up everywhere with my chargers and devices and pillows and blankets!!!
My school stuff, Jackie's school stuff, my husbands stuff for working from home!!!

My husband has been doing the laundry... Shrunk a few things on me,,, but I can't complain...can I!

Tonight we invited my mother in law and her sister over. We will order pizza and play cards. They are both practically home bound so they enjoy the night out!

Have a nice day and we will talk later!

So how did you get your hair cut? It must be so fun to have a daughter to do things like that with. My son's have never been fans of going to the beauty shop....

I haven't heard of Planet Fitness, must not be in the Cleveland area. I'm surprised they don't have a recombinant exercise bike. We bought one just before Christmas and I couldn't wait to use it. I tried before the surgery but it really hurt and I couldn't peddle unless I put the seat all the way back and scooted my butt all the way up so I was practically laying down to use it. Very uncomfortable. My OS gave me the OK to use it at the two week followup appointment. I also like the machines where you lie on your back and push with your feet. Unfortunately the place I go to this year doesn't have one. I just purchased an aerobic stepper at Amazon. There are several exercises they have me do at PT that involve using one in several different ways and those things seem to help a lot. Also about the time my hips started getting really bad I purchased an exercise CD that was for a stepper. It has never been used so maybe in a few more weeks I will try it.

How great that your parents lived to 93! You must have good genes. My mom was only 68 and lost her battle with liver cancer. My dad was 86 and was healthy right up to the end. He used to do swim several times a week, volunteer at his local historical club and a multitude of other things. He had his hip replaced when he was 73. I think keeping busy is what kept him young.

We went running around all over the place today. Walmart and the grocery store first with my mother in law, then home to put stuff away. After that Frank and I went out to Kohls to take advantage of some sales then we went around to some sporting goods places to see if they had the stepper I wanted. After that we went to dinner at a Mexican place. I NEVER turn down Mexican! When we got home from that I took a quick walk around the block to burn off a few of the calories. Too bad it gets dark so early, I would have enjoyed walking more. It just feels good to be outside.

Hope you are enjoying your cards and Pizza!

Hi Sue,
Hair went well. We were all over the place today also. Hair, shopping, and banquet hall viewing (which was a bust today). I am so impressed as how well you are moving around. I wish I could move like you...I know everyone heals differently!

I love Mexican food also!!! We went out for that last weekend. Tonight will be low keyed evening with mom in law!
My parents were relatively well until about their late 80s! Then things started to go downhill.

Well mom just got here...talk to you later.
