2018 September Sapphires - Are you having hip surgery in September?

Hey @txlady60 we’re having hip replacement on the same day. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting more nervous by the day!

I don’t have a pre-op thread but did set up a recovery thread:
Second round ... and I sure hope it goes as well as the first

I did have my first hip done just about a year ago.

Are you ready???

Hello, Well I’m back. I had a THR anterior approach on right hip 3-24-2014. Best thing I ever did. now I’m doing the left one. This one is a FAI, cam, and torn labrum. Too old and too torn up for arthroscopic procedure. My surgery date is 9-26-2018. A little nervous, have many things to do before the date. Garden is coming in, and I’m trying to ride horses as much as possible before. Go in tomorrow for pre-op stuff.

I'm the day after you and txlady60 and I am Definitely getting more nervous.....somehow, previous experience is not having the desired effect, even tho it went well first time round. Maybe it's because the right was affecting me much more....leftie is being remarkably quiet, so I'm not going to be sighing in relief at an end to agonising pain....lol shouldn't grumble should I? :heehee: Fingers crossed for everyone in September for a successful op and easy recovery :fingersx::friends:

Hi, I am new. I got my LTH done on September 6. I am having problems with foot swelling.

Welcome @Engineer1 ! Super normal! Make sure you drink lots of water as well. Soon you will be welcomed by the “powers that be” (admins) with all sorts of info! But keep those legs elevated!

@Lmflora and @anny — I also had right done and left coming up 9/17. I am working through my "punch list" as well. The still-arthritic hip has been burning a bit. I'm hoping this time will be easier, because there have been times when climbing the stairs leading with my "good leg" did not feel all that good. Just trying to stay in the moment with it all. I already have a walker and crutches at hand, and enough surgical soap to last me a lifetime. And as of the day before yesterday, I've been walking unaided. Grateful for that! Best thoughts to you.

@EL11 boy I hear you, sometimes my “good hip” is Problematic. Turns out I have persistent adductor muscle inflammation since the RTHR 4 years ago. Other than that I am so thankful for the new hip, best thing I ever did. But the muscle issue is sometimes a problem. Been to PT, massage therapy, corrective training, heat etc. but always seems to come back. Only affects at certain positions, like putting on pants and socks I get a sharp twinge but I can walk and hike, and ride horses without any problem. Ortho says it’s not very common, but some people do have problems with muscle after the THR. I’m hoping I don’t have the same issue on the left side.

I had my left hip replaced on 9/5/2018. Prior to that, I had THR on right hip done 4 years ago. I had both knees replaced in 2013, four months apart. This site has been a help to me over the years, before and after surgeries. Since it's been 4 years since my last THR, I thought it would be good to update/remember what I should be doing in the recovery process, etc. My surgery went well (3 days ago) and I'm at home now. Trying to manage the pain and not have unrealistic objectives at this point.

Thanks for asking, Lmflora. I'm doing better today (about 10 days post-op). For the first week, I had a wound vac on my incision which really helped reduce the swelling. After it was removed however, my incision really swelled up. Trying to manage the pain - I got overconfident a few days ago and that was rough. Sleeping is a big problem as I've never been a back sleeper. Riding in the car is hard, all the jostling hurts more than it seems like it should.
I was in the hospital two nights.

@bottomshollow - my surgery date was changed from September 20 to September 21.... Surgeon had an emergency.... (golf tournament??) :)

Also, open invitation to a Sept Sapphire recovery party in my room on PM Sept 21 or Sept 22nd! Be there, you won't want to miss it... we've got @SurreyGirl on the violin (good post-op pain accompaniment music) @An54 - designer extraordinaire, is in charge of party decorations and beverages. Drop in and share the cheer!

@DonnieP, how does this THR compare to your first one? I’m starting to get nervous. Which kind of anesthesia did you do? We live out of town, so riding in a car is part of the program. :groan:I’m envious of the hippies who have PT home visits. Did you have a wound vac last time? I’m a side sleeper, and am not great on my back either. What kind of pain meds are you on?

I have brought forward this month's list so that you can easily see who your surgical buddies are.

Welcome to our latest and all September Sapphires!

Feel free post your surgery date in this thread, and I will add you to the list. Start a thread of your own in the Pre-Op Hip Section to post comments and share your journey toward hip replacement. Here are the instructions you need to do this:

To start a new thread, hover your mouse "Hip" on the blue line at the top of the page for the drop down menu. Click on the "Pre Op".

On the upper right hand side under the "Joint Replacement Awareness Day" banner, you will see a black rectangle with the words "Post New Thread" in white. Click on this, enter whatever title you want for your thread, but do try to keep it short and sweet, then tab down to the dialogue box and start typing your post which can be as long as you need for it to be.

By starting your own thread, you and your questions and concerns will receive the attention they deserve.

I’m having my right hip replaced for the first time 27th September. I had my left one done last October but it seems to be clunking hoping it settles, have put it down to strain from my limp as my right hip is really painful.. my left replacement has started to give some pain too.. Am a bit worried I will strain it even more while the right heals... I have a different surgeon as I’m having it done at the private hospital under the nhs and the other one wasn’t available..
