2018 September Sapphires - Are you having hip surgery in September?

Do you quilt @Going4fun ? I’ve been quilting up a storm this summer - afraid I’m going to lose my mojo after surgery (at least for awhile)

I have brought forward this month's list so that you can easily see who your surgical buddies are.

Welcome to our latest and all September Sapphires!

Feel free post your surgery date in this thread, and I will add you to the list. Start a thread of your own in the Pre-Op Hip Section to post comments and share your journey toward hip replacement. Here are the instructions you need to do this:

To start a new thread, hover your mouse "Hip" on the blue line at the top of the page for the drop down menu. Click on the "Pre Op".

On the upper right hand side under the "Joint Replacement Awareness Day" banner, you will see a black rectangle with the words "Post New Thread" in white. Click on this, enter whatever title you want for your thread, but do try to keep it short and sweet, then tab down to the dialogue box and start typing your post which can be as long as you need for it to be.

By starting your own thread, you and your questions and concerns will receive the attention they deserve.

For additional help, look in the white heading under the blue, click on "Help & Info", then click on "How to Use This Forum". Lots of info there to help you navigate the forum.

@Knitquilt, I don't knit, but I have a good friend who knits up a storm ... My thing is swing dancing and Lindy Hop.

There is no way you're going to lose your mojo for quilting after the surgery. Maybe a temporary pause ... I went out dancing a few weeks back ... just to give myself another "taste" of fun in order to keep my mind on what I'm hoping for after the hip surgery. I was out of shape, and I happened to ask these amazing fast dancers to dance with me. They were lightning-speed.

I kept up for about 25 minutes and then had to take a break ... Later I hobbled to my car ... and my hip ached for a few days ... But it was the fun I wanted ... the reminder I wanted of what I'm looking forward to doing without aching pain afterwards.

Funny: 25 minutes didn't sound like a lot at the time ... the dances go for like 2 hours ... but writing this out now, I'm like wow, 25 minutes was a lot of dancing on my hip!

@Kmhefner Hello fellow Sapphire! I have been living on Meloxicam and Tylenol while trying to keep up with our horse farm chores. Can no longer ride. Having bilateral THR Sept 14. I am reading up on your journey.....not fun
So sorry for the late response! My meds are the same as yours except I'm not doing farm chores! I really hope your bilateral replacement will make life better for you.

@Going4fun Wow!!! Swing dancing and Lindy Hop (heard of this one, but need to look it up) And for 25 minutes - I don’t know if I can walk for 25 minutes right now!

All your dancing will bode well for your recovery - no atrophied muscles for you! When I had my right hip replaced, I didn’t feel like doing anything for about a month and that is very unusual for me - maybe this time will be different.

And I just noticed you are a male - don’t know if I would have asked if you quilt had I known :egypdance::egypdance:

@Knitquilt, no problem with the quilting question. Good luck on your second hip ... I'm trying to brace myself for recovery ... BTW: my surgeon got excited when I told him how important swing dance is to me. That meant so much for feeling in sync with him.

@Kmhefner Wishing you comfort and as little pain as possible leading up to your surgery...you are a few days after me. Thinking of you on this journey and sending tons of positive vibes. Just think of how much we will be able to do when we are through it all. I'm writing a list of all that I'm looking forward to doing again :)

Is anyone of the Sapphire gems having trouble with knees now? I assume my knees are talking to me, as my posture with bad hips is sending messages south... Had several conversations with volunteers from Canadian based volunteer network that have been through bi-lateral replacements. All have very positive comments and reiterate that healing will be "as it should" with each individual...

@Alitm well wishes to you on your recovery as well! Hopefully we can cheer each other on once we're on the other side!

Hello! Sept 13th is my day for a right total hip (posterior). The countdown is on! I was born with hip dysplasia (totally dislocated) had them surgically repaired at age 3. I am now at end stage osteoarthritis in my right hip and moderate/severe osteoarthritis in my left. The plan is to have the left side done in Dec. I hope to make some friends here! Let's do this together. That sounds so cheesy haha

Hello, I have severe osteoarthritis, I had a knee replacement in February and having my right hip done on September 5th I am having it anterior so everyone says it's a lot easier than posterior, I sure hope so.

Hi @NMRJS I’m having my left hip replaced 3 days before you. My right was replaced last October. I wish I had scheduled mine to be done closer together like you, so it’s more like one recovery - by next summer you’ll be dancing!

Hi how bad was your pain? Did you have posterior ir anterior? Mine is going to be anterior, they say hip surgery isn't as bad as knee surgery, my knee surgery was rough! I'm clueless when it comes to my hip so I'm pretty nervous.

Hi @Marcia61 I’ve also heard that hip surgery is easier than knee replacement. I had anterior last October and it will be anterior again for my left. I have to say it wasn’t all that bad - the worst for me was low blood pressure and getting sick in the hospital- you can read my first thread Knitquilt’s Little Bumpy Recovery - very riveting reading, I’m sure :loll:

Once I got home, my recovery was very smooth and the main thing I remember was the boredom. I always thought I was a patient person, but there’s an awlful lot of time spent on the couch elevating and icing.

There really wasn’t horrible pain - the first few weeks were managed with Tramadol and Tylenol.

OH thank you @bottomshollow ! I'm still in denial about the September one so thought this was a typo!! :)

Nice to be a sapphire. Told my surgeon I had so much fun the first time that I wanted to do it all again.
