Hello Gusteenie, I am also in Canada (BC) and am having bilateral THR on Sept 14, a few days before you.

My knees have started to bother me, particularly my right one. I hear this isn't unusual. I've been focusing on my gait to see what I'm doing and realized that I'm walking down almost the outside of my foot! Crazy. I used to land on outside of my heel and roll my foot in, always wearing down the outer heel of my shoes. It has become a lot worse now. I went to see a RMT and she found that my right IT band was really tight (and painful!) and where it joins down by my right knee it was very very sore there. She thinks it is more about my IT band than my knee, and suggested I really try and walk correctly from heel to toe without rolling my foot to the outside, as best as I can given that my hips are pretty uncomfortable. It does seem to help the knee pain.

The other point I want to mention, which I learned here on BoneSmart (and you may already know about), is that one should replace one's high wear shoes and boots, as we have worn the incorrect gait pattern in these shoes, so should replace them for post op.

Are you able to share the Canadian network you were referring too...."volunteers from Canadian based volunteer network that have been through bi-lateral replacements".

It will be nice to have a fellow bilat to share and exchange notes with :)
Wishing you a great weekend!

Hello 1stSurgery, How are you healing from your first THR? Hope it is going well as you approach your second surgery. You are brave, I have to get it over and done with in one go! :spin:

Hello @kevinax, I understand how you are feeling! I'm in BC Canada, and having bilateral THR, anterior approach, on Sept 14. I am nervous on one hand but really thrilled to be getting it done and behind me on the other. I take my hat off to those who have one done, wait three months and then have the other done. I'm not good at long term projects :heehee:

Hello @NMRJS, we are almost twins, my surgery (Sept 14) is the day after yours! I am thankful for this forum and it is much easier to go through THR with others going through the same thing, be able to exchange "notes" and support each other...makes it much easier I think!:)

Hello @Marcia61. I am having the anterior approach as well. Our soft tissue structures will be pulled aside and will be very sore and traumatized after the surgery. I read that first six weeks are easier in some ways for anterior patients as we don't have as many restrictions (check of course with your OS on this) due to the muscles sparing of the posterior muscle sparing. However the overall healing time for the bone to graft to the prosthesis, the soft tissue structures that have been pulled aside to heal, and our bodies to recover from the surgical trauma and to settle down is the same as other approaches. I read that the short term healing is three months and the long term is six months to a year, no matter what the approach. Everyone is different of course to some extent. What I do read is that those who push too hard early on end up with nasty tendonitis and bursitis type issues that really set them back. I hope to get the rehab right the first time! I may have to take some patience pills with my pain meds:heehee:

Hello @donnybasbl,

Sorry you are having so much pain but great that you can still play golf! My hips started going down hill quickly in 2015. In hind site there were earlier issues, but they didn't seem to stop me. I haven't been able to ride my horse since early in 2017, but somehow can still do barn chores (doesn't seem fair!), but with a lot of pain now. My surgeon says I can get back to riding as soon as I have healed and built up my strength again. I try to keep going but have had to drop regular pilates and yoga classes and feel my fitness level going down hill, which is a bit disconcerting to say the least. I understand about the feeling older and older!

I have OS in both hips so am having bilateral anterior on Sept 14th. I had a nasty fall off a horse in my twenties, and saw a great back surgeon at HSS in NYC! He sorted me out, taking a conservative approach (no surgery but three months off work!). I'm in Canada now and have a great surgeon here.

Hoping that you can be kept as comfortable as possible until your surgery date. The waiting is no fun I have to say. Folks who are on the healing side of BoneSmart say that the waiting is the hardest part!

Looks like we have a good group of folks having September surgeries, and a few returns for the second round folk who can give us some insight! Nice to have the company :).

Have a great weekend!

I have brought forward this month's list so that you can easily see who your surgical buddies are.

Welcome to our latest and all September Sapphires!

Feel free post your surgery date in this thread, and I will add you to the list. Start a thread of your own in the Pre-Op Hip Section to post comments and share your journey toward hip replacement. Here are the instructions you need to do this:

To start a new thread, hover your mouse "Hip" on the blue line at the top of the page for the drop down menu. Click on the "Pre Op".

On the upper right hand side under the "Joint Replacement Awareness Day" banner, you will see a black rectangle with the words "Post New Thread" in white. Click on this, enter whatever title you want for your thread, but do try to keep it short and sweet, then tab down to the dialogue box and start typing your post which can be as long as you need for it to be.

By starting your own thread, you and your questions and concerns will receive the attention they deserve.

No YOU are brave!! Bilateral is the big one! I had intended to do second one in the winter, maybe November/ December....but right hip has had her own ideas and made me call to schedule right away instead. Didn't realize that our second hips, if also arthritic, take quite a beating during recovery of the operated side and go downhill rapidly. All that additional weight bearing. That's what happened. Left/operated side feels great! Good luck to you in September!!

I am having revision surgery on my right hip on Sept. 19. The revision is to correct what the first OS did not do correctly in April in '17. The first surgery was an emergency replacement due to a fall breaking my hip. I came out of surgery with a partial replacement instead of a full replacement. So now I have arthritis - the metal ball is starting to rub on my bone. Adding to that, my rehab has been awful. Despite months and months of PT (easy stuff) and trying to move, I could not regain muscle strength. I am just now walking better but still with a slight limp. I have a wonderful new OS, Dr. S Kreuzer in Houston. Anterior apraoach. He plans to leave the existing stem and replace the ball and add a new socket. (I think that is the correct way to explain that) I'm scared but realize I must do this.

I’m not really sure how to navigate this forum, but have to start somewhere. I’ve been reading all over it for the past month. I had my right THR July 27, 2018 and am having my left done September 5, 2018. Recovery has gone very well and the doctor and PT’s are amazed. I’m 22 days post op and am only taking Tylenol for pain sometimes. The first 10 days were pretty painful at times but a piece of cake after that (I call pain under a level 6 just pressure). I can walk pretty well but use a cane for going places in public (for safety). I use my walker as a shark cage if I go outside to visit my large dogs. What I’m wondering is where I can find advice about how to follow precautions with surgeries so close together. I am very happy with the decision to do it this way and am mentally prepared for the pain and extra difficulty, but could use some tips on getting out of a chair, getting into bed, etc. The only really crappy thing I’ve found so far in all of this is sleeping on my back.

It's time to do my right hip. Anterior total left hip was done on 7/10 and went great.

Anterior total right hip scheduled for 9/11! Can't wait to be completely pain free!

Getting my left hip on 9/6. Can't believe I only heard of this about a month ago when the doc told me he could see it on the x-ray (I thought I tore a labrum). On the bright side, it probably explains a lot of my back pain, just didn't know what the cause was - so once it's fixed, maybe I'll feel like Superman! Haha. My birthday is 9/23, so my goal is to be able to go out to dinner by then
