Hi CatLady1,
You are 3 weeks post op. How is your recovery going? I'm wondering how long before I want to ride in the car to join the family on various outings. Surgery is Wednesday (tomorrow). Grandkids coming for ski lesson on Sunday…I'm thinking I might not be able to go watch, but sure would love to. We play Trivia on Wednesday night…that would be 1 week post op. 12 days post op, we're planning to go north for 3 days of snowmobiling…not me…I'll stay behind and read, do puzzles and rest…friends will snowmobile with my DH. Am I crazy?

Hi Fore! I'm not a golfer, but sure hope you can meet your target! Our surgeries are the same day, so we can compare notes on recovery. I expect to come home tomorrow, post surgery, with a long acting novacaine in my hip to keep pain away for 3 days. Visiting Nurses will come to house and start PT as well as checking incision. Our house is pretty well set with raised toilet seat, 1st floor bedroom, friends bringing meals, devoted hubby…I am blessed.

How are you set? It's bound to be better than this pain, eh?

@Kyniska - I've ridden in a car about 3 times now - the first time about a week out, about a 30 minute ride, then at the 2nd week mark took an hour ride to the Dr's office for a two week follow up, and the 3rd time around our neighborhood. The doctor advised me to get up and move - don't sit around, when I asked how much he said move every hour. You'll want to sit / lay and ice your hip / leg to reduce swelling - it will probably be a lot easier to do that at home than off on a trip. If it were me, I'd maybe go play trivia, but would decline the snow mobile trip. At the start, the getting in and out of the car was uncomfortable - sliding in sideways without bending and rotating. That said - getting up and walking has been the easy part. I think you'll be more ready to move around after week 2 -3.

Your pain / discomfort will be your guide. The first week I spent a lot of time sleeping (pain meds did that) so if I had gone somewhere, I'd really not be much company. Plus, I wanted to be near my elevated chair, pillows and elevated toilet seat, etc. Good luck tomorrow!

Thanks Catlady! Snowmobile trip is for DH…but if I go, I'll be sure to take toilet seat and pillows…We have a house rented, so I can be comfy while the rest are out playing…tho last year, I think total snowmobile time was just a few hours…it's much more a change of scenery and being together.

I am a big fan of pain meds and I'm able to tolerate them quite well…I feel blessed…and I'm able to give them up just as fast when no longer needed.

Thanks for the good advice from one who has been there, done that!!!

@Kyniska - I think you really need to make decisions about going away once the op is done, I am 3 weeks post op and would definitely not consider going on a long car journey now let alone actually going away, I think you are going to be very surprised how much this will take from you, don't forget this is major surgery and as quoted by my Physio "it is basically humans carpentry and you will not recover overnight" it is a long old journey and my consultant has signed me off work 13 weeks in all! Please take care and good luck ❤️ x
