Revised PKR to TKR 12 months later but can’t find my thread

Wow. I just took my granddaughter to the dr. As I was walking slowly the dr asked why I explained I had a knee replacement 7 weeks ago. Apparently it shouldn't hurt at all now. SIGH

Now I'm having pain issues
You still need you pain medications if you are having pain. When you bend your knee, that is the tight rubber band feeling, it will go away as you heal.
7 weeks is early in TKR recovery, it can take up to a year or more to heal. Many people have pain 3 - 4 months after the surgery. Every recovery is different, don't let anyone else tell you how you should feel.

Thanks @pumpkin. I totally agree but you can't tell people that here. If you go to gp they think you should have no pain as it takes six weeks for bone to heal (maybe in the textbook it does). Pharmacists consider you an addict (I'm so not). I find this ridiculous and frustrating. Therefore it's easier to go without and put up with the pain using ice, elevation and massage.

Found there's a new 12 hour voltaren osteo gel. Hmmm thought I'd try it. Wow! Amazing stuff. It actually worked for me! Less pain, more sleep and does actually last!

@shelli22
Don't forget that Panadol (Paracetemol/Acetaminophen) taken regularly is quite an effective analgesic - and you can buy it over-the-counter.
Recommended dose is 1,000mg (1G) 4-6 hourly, to a total daily dose of 4,000mg (4G).

While bone may only take about 6 weeks to heal, there's been considerable soft tissue trauma, and that can take up to a full year to heal 100%. Healing is definitely not complete in 6 weeks.

Yes @Celle you're right. I'm trying to get that through to the personal trainer at present.

Week 8 yesterday. I've come to the conclusion that the tight ITB, sciatica and tight calf and hamstrings are hindering progress but there's not much I can do about it until it settles down, beside stretching and appropriate exercise. The muscle relaxant stopped the spasm in my quad so that's a bonus. I've been in the ODIC club plenty of times so now I haven't been doing much other than walking, heel slides and quad strengthening but will be going to personal trainer this evening. That should be interesting as I usually go in the morning and my knee is better then. By the end of the day it feels like a brick, no a truck load of cement. Ah well! Happy knees!

Nine weeks and still stiff. Knee Bends with difficulty. But I have found that pressure point massage works for tight ITB and hamstrings. Pity every time you walk or exercise they tighten again. Sigh

That's all saying to me that you are doing too much. I'd not start any more training until your knee settles down.

Sigh

No cortisone

Ok thank you

Maybe I should look for a chiropractor for deep tissue massage. I've never been to one before but as the physio is far from helpful perhaps that's the way to go hmmm

I know it probably feels like forever, but it's still really early in this long recovery process. Maybe it's time to apply the "less is more" philosophy and stop doing as much therapy?

A chiropractor can certainly help with tense and tight muscles, but I'd be cautious about deep tissue massage for a while longer. Those soft tissues are still healing.

Hmm about that soft tissue. I went to visit my son and his gf. We went to Costco (just new here so bit of a novelty). My parents went too. Well I picked the stuff out I needed but my parents were busy looking and buying. They were taking forever so my sons gf and I decided we'd had enough and left to wait in the car. Well I had a moment and completely forgot about my knee. So I hurled myself into the drivers seat like I used to do pre knee op. I felt the most excruciating pain kinda burning in the front of my knee as I bent it to get it in the car. Bends much better now and the front is no longer as tight and painful. Not sure what that's all about but note to self. Don't forget about the knee.

Ouch! :console2:
It sounds as if you gave yourself a Manipulation Without Anaesthetic. You probably tore some of the minor adhesions that usually go away spontaneously, but take a bit longer than you made them. You won't have damaged the implant.

Haha Celle. I did think that might be the case. Doesn't seem to have had any ill effect so I'll just soldier on lol

@Celle @Jamie. I'm putting this on my thread as I believe this forum is AMAZING

Wow reading this thread it just occurred to me how amazing this forum is! It has just dawned on me that I went into my arthroscopy, PKR, arthroscopy,TKR totally blind even though I work in health care. The PKR was required, as it was found I had rapid onset bone on bone osteoarthritis. I just put my trust in the OS and assumed he knew what he was doing, which I totally trust he does. I walked into it all blind. I will add that at that point the arthritis was confined to one compartment. I fell very un-ladylike-ly shortly after and for reasons unknown, it just wouldn't heal and I lived with chronic pain. The MRI showed a lateral meniscus tear and an odd spot on the bone that wasn't there previously. Eventually it was determined the partial was inappropriate and a revision was booked. I accepted it is what it is.

Having read all these pre-op threads, I would have been much more informed and prepared if I had known of this forum. Even thing like purchasing recliners etc, I never even thought about it. I just walked around in circles around the house until I found a comfy possie! I've had a fairly good recovery but did a lot of prehab and now rehab. You are all very lucky to have this forum. It provides a wealth of information and support to many and reading through nearly all of the threads there is a definite feel of support and camaraderie. If only I had found this forum a year ago!,
