Electrical stimulation can help get the swelling down for most people, it is worth a try.
I agree the Docs do not tell the whole story, maybe they are afraid of losing business?

Good luck to you!!! (Hug) I hope they give u Best option for to get swelling down.

I be 3 months from 2nd sugury Tuesday and I have swelling to.

Each day is different. Praying for you. Xxx

My right knee was tight/stiff for up to 7 months. It felt like tight rubber bands around it. Some of us recover much slower than others and that was me three years ago with my right. My left which I had done almost two weeks ago doesn't have that tight band feeling.

No really. My ROM didn't steadily improve, it took 20 months to get to 125 and it would stick at some number for weeks or months and then jump. Here's the progression:

92 - 8 weeks post op
105 - 10 weeks
107 - 5 months
110 - 6 months
112 - 7 months
116 - 9 months
119 - 11 months
118 - 1 yr
120 - 1yr 2 months
125 - 1 yr 8 months

member: 538"]How many of you on here were still stiff and swollen at 6 Wks???...![/QUOTE]

Please don't worry- I was stiff and swollen at 16 weeks. Yes, 16! My OS prescribed an anti-inflammatory at 20 weeks, which helped. I just stopped taking it due to possible side effects. Even now -7 months post op- my knee still has a little firm swelling on the lateral side, and occasionally a band of edema across the front. It can take a full year for our TKR knees to look "normal", and healing continues for another year after that.

like all of you on here around the 6 week mark like myself-,l have all the same issue's with stiffness ,aching, not bending,l have a exercise bike and can't even get the peddle to go around backward or forward yet, so l read all your stories and it sounds like I'm where I'm suppose to be,,Here l was getting worried l was dropping behind, guess l will quit worrying and keep on reading, thanks for all the info

Had my 1st pt appt. today in 3 wks. . He thinks and I agree that my thigh and IT band and r so tight its preventing me from bending knee as far as I could . My ROM went up from 110 to 118!
I was surprised but pleased! I'm going to do one stretch per hr and ride the bike a few times a day for no more than 5 min. He said my swelling is better than most at 6 wks.
So all in all I'm feeling better!
Will only get to pt once a week but will do them at home. Along with icing and elevating !

I am beginning to think women heal faster then men?. I feel like I'm bringing up the rear never leading,,

Cried yesterday in the shower cried when I got to PT today and started talking to him.

Naynay,

I am so sorry you are having such a difficult recovery. My heart goes out to you. It does seem as though your swelling is what is causing the lack of ROM. When you elevate your leg, it is very important that your leg level is above your heart since you have so much swelling, which means that if you are in a sitting position when elevating, that is not being accomplished. Are you laying down with your head at the level of the bed or couch and your foot propped quite a bit up? I just thought I'd mention this, just in case that is not being done, especially since it's something that can so easily be changed. I am going to keep you in my prayers.

Yep that's how I elevate!
Like I said in post this morning pt therapist measured me and Ive gone from 110-118! He says my swelling is less than most patients he sees. We also figured out my thigh muscle is so tight that it has a lot to do with me not being able to bend. The muscle has shortened. My IT band has always been tight and that too is super tight! So I'm working on stretching those muscles along with one stretch an hr for ROM.

Dear naynay30, First, Congrats on your new knee!! I am 4 months out on a LTKR and certainly am no expert, but I have done a lot of reflecting on my experience so far and especially about comments from physical therapists, nurses, etc. and I am finding that all the scare tactics and pushing should be ignored for the most part. All the things they scare you about like ROM, timetables etc will be ignored by me next time around (I still need RTKR). All the things I worried about and fretted over came in due time! I was so worried about tightness-gone, swelling-gone, walking without walker then cane-gone, using stairs-gone. With most of my major worries gone I find myself obsessed about whether my scar is the right color for 4 months and will it fade completely!!Your knee will heal and you will be able to do all the things you are so worried about! Everything you read here about your knee being on its own timetable is exactly right! I am so proud of what my knee has gone through and what it can now do!
