TKR 10 week check up

Yes, it's normal to still feel stiff and swollen at 9 weeks.

A knee replacement is major surgery and your knee has been wounded and traumatised. The poor knee takes a long time to recover - and so it should.

My op was the same day as yours, Polarbear, and it sounds as though we're at exactly the same stage - must be doing something right!

9 weeks Tue. My knee still swollen and stiff,,l still need a walker or crutch, still can't drive, but the hurting has let up so I'm debating whether to keep taking the Tylenol or not,,depressing, yes it gets to be,l kinda know how you feel,,l live alone so some of the days seem pretty long,,it can't be much longer before we both see some big difference l hoped, hang in there. Its all we can do,,l tried the Saran wrap thing last night, the jury still out on that,

I'm very stiff today at my 8 week anniversary...definitely overdid it yesterday with some shopping and out to dinner to celebrate Father's Day. Didn't feel like I was overdoing it at the time though.

At 13 weeks still some swelling and some stiffness but it is a minor nuisance. First thing in the morning though I feel normal some days. I'll take it. Maybe next month there will be some other moment during the day when that happens. I didn't go into this to regain my youth, I just want to function better than I could. Without the bionic knee I would be mostly house bound.

KYata, I am at 14 weeks today, and I am still stiff and swell every day. But, I am walking independently and have little or no pain; so I am grateful! Josephine and Pumpkin and others have given me some really great advice! Keep going, I am grateful that thise site is available!

Anyone from San Diego?
Looking to borrow a ice machine for knee. Mine just started leaking.
At 10 wks still stiff and swollen although ROM is 125 extension 0. Activity level low I tire easily and can't be on leg more than 3o min. Ice and elevate a lot . Depressed over this very long hard recovery

I've been wondering how you're doing, Jana, so it's good to get an update. Yep, I still have have stiffness and swelling too -- along with some pain in one area mostly -- and I'm only two weeks behind you. While it's getting better, I sure don't have my stamina back yet either. Yes, it's a long long recovery -- longer than most people probably like -- but take it a day at a time and we will get there!

Hi Jana,
If you're not successful in borrowing an ice machine, you can use frozen gel packs. I had four of these, and I kept them all frozen, so that I always had cold ones to replace the one in use.

Your energy will come back gradually, but most of it is still going towards healing that knee.

I know this is a long and tedious recovery, but it really is worth it in the end. Hang in there!

Does your ice machine have a cuff that attaches to the bucket that holds the ice the the iced water is gravity fed into the cuff/sleeve? You can fill the cuff with water and then put it in the fridge to get cold. My hospital has single person use cuffs for CryoCuff and then I got to bring the cuff home with the water already in it.

l can not help out with a ice machine but l have been using the Saran wrap at night and think it helps ,my knee feels the best when l wake up in the morning,at least in my mind it does,l rub my knee with vit.E oil first, call me crazy,,lol

Excellent ROM !

Yes, I think you could cut back on those exercises. Once an hour is a bit much. You've got the bend and flex now. you won't lose it.

Saw doc yesterday . 10 wk post op. Knee still swollen and very stiff a little warm.
Doc says more swollen than most at 10wks but I was stiff along time with scope too.
He did blood wk for infection 6 wks ago. Everything fine.
He wants to wait 2 mos and see if swelling continues to go down. He said it has gone down in the last 6 wks even tho I can't tell.
It's warm pinkish and swollen . Just emailed doc. If there's a chance of infection I want it checked now!
ROM 125 extension almost 0 although yesterday in docs office knee was to stiff in morning so didn't want him to push on it. Frustrating!

You may notice that I have merged your two threads. We like to keep our members' recovery posts all in a single thread. That way it's easy for us to go back and read your history before responding to a question or concern. In addition, the thread becomes a journal of your recovery for those who come along later and want to read about you. So, please post in this thread from now on when you want to give an update or ask a question. If you decide you'd like a different thread title at any point, just post what you want here and we'll get it changed for you.

The "bumps" you saw were an administrative tool to accomplish the merge. Once the merge is complete those "bump" posts are removed.
