Hello Friends!

How are you all doing?

I am doing well. Its been six months now. My PT is stopped. I have been advised to continue my exercises as my Right hip muscles are still weak ! I am continuing these exercises but still when I get tired..I start limping also my stamina has not increased significantly. I can walk distances as I have told you earlier but after those walks I get really tired and I start limping. Some times when I get out of the chair I limp a few steps... Is this normal.. or am way behind :what::what:????

Also, I may be traveling with my family to my home country in the mid of next month. Total fling time will be around 18 to 19 hrs.. 15-16 hrs one flight and then a stop over and then 3 hrs. What do you guys have to say?? What will be the suggestions for me? My next appointment with my OS is in June. I may be calling is office to check this out but definitely your opinion is what I am looking forward to.

Thank you :flowerysmile::flowerysmile: !!

I think you are doing just fine. The key point is that you are walking just fine until you get tired. Only then do you start to limp a little. It's going to take some significant time for you to regain muscle strength and stamina. You know, you didn't lose all that in a short period of time.....it won't be quick to come back either. Keep working on it and you'll be even better in the next 6 months!

One thing....do try to keep your workouts, walking and activity just to the point where you get so tired that you limp. Allow yourself a rest on alternate days when you go at it hard. That gives your body a chance to regroup and you'll steadily grow stronger that way. You don't want to be limping - ever.....it is counterproductive if you can avoid it.

Your planned trip would be a difficult one for a totally healthy person!!! Do a lot of planning ahead. Take items you might need....ice bags, zip lock bags to put ice in on the plane, a cane in case you need it when you're tired, pain medications just in case. Get up and move around frequently on the plane. Request transportation and wheel chairs in the airport just in case you need them. You need to do everything possible to conserve energy and keep pain at bay.

Hi SMA - congrats on the progress you have made. Sounds like you are doing just fine! Don't worry that everything is not perfect yet. It will come. As Jamie says, you still need to rest.

I am flying internationally at the end of this month as well. I agree with everything Jamie says - take everything you might need and even things you might not!

One other thing - you might want to consider wearing some flight socks. They are not as bad as the TEDs you got in hospital but they do help prevent DVT on long haul flights, I have alway worn them for the long journeys but will certainly have them for this one.

Also - ask for an aisle seat so you can move around whenever you need to. Get up and walk as much as possible so you don't arrive stiff.

Have a great trip!

Just met with some fellow "Hippies." One of the things everyone agreed on is the fact that when you're flying long distances, it's good to wear those TEDs. One thing you don't want to get from a long flight is a blood clot.

Am planning a short trip next month (2 1/2 hours) and, although I hate them, I plan to dig them out of the drawer and wear the TEDs under my jeans. Maybe this is being a little too cautious, but figure it's better to be safe than sorry.

And Jaycey hit the nail on the head!! Ask for an aisle seat so you can stretch out that leg. I always asked for aisle seats before surgery, and plan to continue to do so!

Have a great time!

Daybyday, buy yourself some flight socks. They are much more comfortable than the very tight TEDs and come in dark blue or black - perfect for wearing with jeans.

I was never given any socks after the surgery... but I try to get flight socks that you have suggested. Thanks for your help once again!

HI SMA!!! Sounds like you are doing pretty darn good! I agree with everyone else, muscles and the such need time. Its not like you went from good hip to bad hip overnight...right?!

Have fun on your trip!:THUMB:

Thanks Haldox! How are you doing? I am looking forward to my trip.. we have now re-scheduled it on an earlier date. We will be now travelling end of this month :dancy:!

A quick question... last night while working in the kitchen I almost burnt my hand with the steam (nothing serious at all)... when steam touched my hand I totally forgot about everything and I just jumped out of pain ; and then I realised that I shouldn't have jumped.. since then I am feeling little pain in the joint and my entire leg... Is there anything to worry about ?? Do I now need to do something? I have taken pain killer but I can't see any difference. Should I take heat or do I need to consult my GP?? I can't meet my OS before June :skeptical:!!

Thanks!

SMA, the pain you are feeling is soft tissue pain from making that unplanned emergency response to the burn. Just take it easy for a week or so....not too much exercise. Ice and elevate your leg and take pain meds on a schedule (either prescription or over-the-counter meds). I thinjk you'll find it feeling better soon.

Hi SMA,

I think we must be twins :) I had my surgery the day after you, and I'm still working on improving my walking. I've had hip problems my whole life, I've basically never walked properly, so I've had a lot of catching up to do. I'm still limping a bit, I walk around the house without my cane, but am using it for most other walking. So you're not alone!

I'm also planning on going back home soon (UK), I just had my 6 month checkup and completely forgot to ask about it. I was assuming there would be no issues, although getting the DVT socks is a good idea. Doing the post surgery exercises (foot pumps, etc) will probably be useful too.

sma, as Jamie suggested just take it easy for a few days. I had a fall at about 6 months and experienced the same thing. Be sure and take something for the pain as well.

Have fun on your trip!

Hi sma. Good to see you again and know how you are getting along. Sorry you still have problems but there ya go - that's life.
