TKR Webbie's saga

Best news ever regarding your husband!!
Great work on the knee and your weight.
I keep waiting for that loss of appetite, but it ain't happening :heehee:

Woke up this morning with blood in my urine. After a trip to a free standing clinic I am on antibiotics for a UTI.

PT continues to progress!

I'm glad you were able to make it to the clinic. I hope you're feeling well soon

I have been feeling sick. Clinic called to see how I was doing and when I told them my symptoms they switched my antibiotic. One step forward and 2 back!

Oh my. First, wonderful news about your husband! Second, I am sorry about the UTI! Are you on a blood thinner? Could that be causing some blood in your urine? Thankfully, the anitbiotic should do its work quickly and you will be on your way to a more peaceful recovery. :console2:

Today was my 4 week follow up with the OS. He was pleased with my extension and the 95* bend although it was a very stiff tough 95. He wants me to start out patient PT by next week. Ugh. I just hope I can drive, tomorrow I head out to the garage to see if I can ge my foot from the gas to the brake.

On the way home from my appointment we stopped at our little grocery store. I decided I would attempt to go in with hubby. Grabbed ahold of the cart and went about my shopping. Felt good t be doing something!

This morning before my appointment I was feeling pretty good. I had to go back upstairs to get dressed. I started up the stairs and attempted to put one foot over the other...normal way to walk upstairs. I was surprised that I could do it....not very pretty but I did it.

OS once again was adamant about bending the knee.....what does he think I have been doing. Well, in my head I did answer him in some very not so nice language.

Improvement is needed with sleep, knee bend and strength. Spirits are much better today so I am hoping this is the beginning of better times.

Don't worry if you can't drive yet, or go to PT for a week or two. In this year-long recovery, a couple of weeks isn't significant.
Concentrate on rest, ice and elevation, so that you reduce the swelling - and the bend will appear.

First---that is great news about your husband!!

Secondly, with your UTI, you might want to ease back on your own PT---listen to your body. It is OK to take some time off here and there.
Concentrate on rest, ice and elevation, so that you reduce the swelling - and the bend will appear.
Again, I agree---sometimes a little bit of rest and icing (while we feel that we should be working!) is really what works best.

Hi, Kathy! You are doing great! I started driving 3 1/2 weeks post RTKR after driving around the block a few times with my teenage son riding shotgun just in case. It felt good to be able to drive to the local supermarket and pick up my own prescriptions at the same place. My store has nice ride-in electric carts, which I used. But WALKING across the parking lot and into the store, then back to the car- was super exhausting. You may encounter similar, so keep your early "out & abouts" short and to the point.

This time around I did not begin any sort of formal PT until 6 weeks post op, and am progressing better and in much more comfort vs. my first TKR, where I started PT right away.

Congratulations on the steps. It's good when you see you can do something. Just take it slowly but surely and you'll keep improving.

I agreed with PT to only do the stairs once a day for now...and earlier in the day.

I was discharged from home PT today. I am at 5 weeks. Started home PT with -5/65*. Today I was 0/100*. Monday morning I start out patient PT.

Kathy, that is great! You were lucky to have home PT so long. I was only allowed 2 weeks and started outpatient last week.

I had 2 week home PT too. I was wondering what the norm is. Just make sure outpatient doesn't push you harder than what you've been doing because your numbers are great!!

As far as PT goes, I don't think there is a norm. A lot depends on your surgeon's protocols.

While many people in the US have home PT and then outpatient PT, people in the UK and NZ don't have home PT and many don't go to outpatient PT either. They may be shown a few exercises in hospital and then follow printed suggestions.

In spite of the different approaches, our knees all recover equally well. Go figure!

I was in rehab for 15 days and then had home PT for 3 weeks so I was very lucky. I had having to confront people so I am hoping that on Monday I get a PT who will respect my wishes. If they are any good at their job all they have to do is place their hands on my leg and they will feel my problem muscles and IT band. I will NOT allow aggressive PT. slow but steady is my motto.

Tomorrow afternoon I will get to go to my first college basketball game. It is a really long walk and crowded so I will be using a transport chair. Don't need being knocked and fall. I have a reservation for handicap seating.

Off to do my exercises. Have a good day everyone with little pain.

I hope you have a great time at the basketball game! Nothing like some distraction to make you feel normal.
