TKR Webbie's saga

If your knee is sensitive through the night you can try this Saran Wrap trick.

That Saran wrap treatment works well for lots of people. You just need to be certain that the skin surface of your wound has completely healed (no scabs, no open areas) before you try it.

You have been through a lot of bullying so far in your recovery. I was so happy to walk into my own room after TKR. I left the hospital on the second day---and it was so much easier to control the pain meds in my house!! I did not have to wait 30 min for a tablet.

So many PTd are really not trained very well. Remember someone graduated at the bottom of the class too!!! With the home PT, just say right away that you do not want them to push on your leg to get the knee to bend. That causes more swelling and makes your rom worse!!! My husband had home health and I was impressed with the nurses---very gentle and kind.

I will have to wait to try the Saran Wrap. I still have drainage from my knee. It had stopped draining before the aggressive PT.

I am looking forward to a little gentle help getting my knee to where it needs to be.

I started to massage my muscles(not incision area) with some essential oils and it does seem to help.

Tomorrow/ today will be my first day home alone. I feel confident that I will be fine.i should be getting a call from home health care to set up an evaluation for services.

Thank you all for caring and offering encouragement....I need it. The events of the past year have caught up to me and I find myself very emotional. My list includes a heart catheterization, hubby's 6 months of chemo, hip replacement, surgery for a skin cancer, son in laws diagnosis of MD and now my knee replacement. A lot for one year but I will get through it. Thank you all again.

You have had a lot to contend with. You'll get through this, too, and we'll be here, to support, to listen, and to cheer you on. :friends:

Oh @webbie73 you have been through/going through so much. I was thinking yesterday that I can only deal with one thing at a time without overload. There you are dealing with so much (understatement). Look after yourself in the middle of all of this. Take care.

That's so much to be though in 1 year. I hope that things go much better from this point out. You and your family are in my prayers.

Had my in home PT evaluation today and finally someone gets what I have been saying for 6 years!!! The hip has never recovered!!(shortened and weakened muscles) Long story short is the hip is delaying the recovery of the knee but all is not lost. We are going to work on the hip and knee at the same time. I feel so encouraged today. It is going to be a long haul but I think we might get it done.

Also on a positive, no drainage for 24 hours! First time since my PT injury 2 weeks ago.

Tonight I am moving back upstairs to sleep.

Good luck sleeping in your bed! I hope you get a few hours at a time and happy to hear the PT seems to understand the problem.

Happy to report 4 straight hours of sleep before the pain woke me up. Being in a bigger bed really helped. I was in a twin bed down stirs. The twin bed is good for PT.
Happy to report my 10 pound weight loss is still holding strong.
I am still depressed and struggle with seeing "the end is in sight"

Little steps and looking at changes over a week instead of day is typical with a TKR. A week ago you were sleeping in the twin bed, next week you'll have made another small step toward full recovery.

Baby steps. As long as they are moving forward, you will eventually get to the place you had hoped to be when you started this verrrrry long journey. One day at a time.

It's normal to feel depressed after this surgery and you have had more to contend with than most people.
Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it
However, if it lingers and it's really getting you down, do ask your regular doctor for a sort course of medication to help.

Hang in there. Things are going to get better.

Weight loss. Better sleep. Sounds like improvement to me. It does get better. But like our friends above have said, easier to see it in weekly increments. As my second knee recovers I find it so useful to look back over my own thread to see where I was with my first. Your new knee is brand new. You will be surprised how much better you feel by Thanksgiving.

Excellent! Yes, at first when every movement overnight is a big production, it's nice to have room.

I'm so happy that you got four hours sleep. Sleep is a great healer in itself. You're doing fine honestly. Thanks for sharing your recovery so honestly. I wish you a speedy recovery. Please take care. Love Nana moon 27 x

@webbie73 I just read through your recovery thread. You have been through so much!! Good news is that as your thread progressed I was happy to read that things were getting better. Slow and steady does it.
I understand you feeling down and overwhelmed from all that you have been through in the past year. I too was fearful about having the surgery because of how difficult the past year has been, but decided fixing my knee would be a positive for myself. Positive but difficult.
Sticking with this forum is a huge help with wonderful support.

Monday is my follow up visit with the OS. Today I reached 90* not a very comfortable 90* but I can now say to the OS that I achieved it and don't have to listen to him lecture me.

I need a lot of strength training in that leg but I can now see some progress. Plus hubby had an oncology check up today. His CT scan is clear for the time being! Hoping for a long remission before the cancer returns. So things are looking up.

On another positive, the 9 pounds lost are still lost!!
