TKR VW's new joint venture

Hmm, I'm just speculating, but imagine the ankle swelling is directly related to your TKR and activity versus your old issues pre-TKR? You did a lot!

I am thinking along the same lines as Pheebs. You did do a lot. I hope you are able to get the swelling down and get comfortable.

Looks like I joined the IOD club celebrating my 1 month kneeversary. Too many times in and out of small car. Too long a ride both to and from venue. 1 hour each way.
Knee is stiff and painful and thigh reels like it may cramp.
Icing and to bed now. Am beat.

(((VW54))) that just stinks! But, we've all done it and will probably do it again....and again over the course of a year. Sending some healing vibes your way.

Unfortunately, it's so easy to overdo when this early in your recovery. All of us have been to the ODIC at least once. Normally, that's all it takes! You are doing the right thing now. You'll probably have to do it for a few days before your knee calms down.

Been reading about hot tubs and warnings on other threads. What is the recommended first time post op?
Smart DH said to wait till my appointment on July 17 and ask OS.
(But as we know, not all OS know such answers.) Anyone here?

We have a few members that tried a hot tub too early and heat brought on more swelling that took a week or 2 to recover from. It's also a bacteria hazard as germs love that hot water. My OS said 3 months, but I know every doc is different.

I always recommend avoiding public hot tubs. I used to have my own which I was fastidious about, but have seen and smelled far too many in public that I knew were just a bacterial soup. Even if your knee has clearance from the OS, (and I don't know when that will happen,) you most likely don't want a UTI. Yeah, you don't.

  • @VW54 I checked with my OS at my six week check up and she said as long as my wound was completely waterproof which is was at it was glued on surface rather than stitched then it was perfectly ok to go to swimming pool or use hot tub. I decided to give it another two weeks before I ventured into the hot tub. I hear where you're coming from re bacteria @ KarriB but I'm manic about making sure the tub is chemically adjusted if needed every day plus before and after using it so bacteria is at a minimum plus always shower before getting in and so far no probs. Now at five months my knee loves the hot water and doesn't ache or swell afterwards, thank goodness!:happydance:

I have also read that steam rooms harbor bacteria. We can't be too careful!

Bacteria just love warm, moist environments, period. The warmer and wetter, the better.

Do you find hot tubs helpful for your fibro @VW54 ? I know sometimes using a heating pad helps my muscles feel better. But I did not go in any water (pool) until at least 3 months.

i would love to swim in a cool cenote in mexico on a hot day. felt so good on my knee back in january before surgery. dreaming!:sigh:

I was cleared to swim at 5.5 weeks and went into the hot tub on vacation at 6w. I took it easy, like 5 mins and made sure my swelling didn't increase. It felt great on my back, hips, lower legs. The cooler pool felt better on the knee joint.

The reason I ask is because the insurance payed-for rehab's venue is at a spa at the edge of the city and it would be so nice to join DH for a soak in the thermal waters after whatever gymnastics they put me through. After all, it takes half an hour to drive there so recently retired DH would go there, (to the spa or sauna) when I have to stay for 3 or more hours.
I know that part of the rehab is water therapy, but that's in cooler water.

I'd like to think your OS will provide you with the appropriate guidelines for hot-tubbing? It wouldn't say much for him if he couldn't answer such a basic question, right? If you don't feel comfortable with his answer, a sauna might be a safer bet initially? At least it's not a wet environment, so that's a plus. My concern beyond bacteria (though that's the big one) would be swelling; ugh! How many weeks post-op will you be by the time you start rehab?

how many weeks post op will you be by the time you start rehab?
8 weeks.
Almost standard procedure I'm told. There are exceptions but that's what most insurance societies here do.
My OS insisted 8 weeks post op should be the earliest. He suggested I do it on outpatient basis.
Most people go away to a rehab place for 3 to 4 weeks. He said that might be too much. Too much at once. As an outpatient I go for 6 weeks! Mon to Thursday, some days 2 hours, some 3, some 4 hours.
I heartily agreed.

That's a new perspective on recovery! What do they do with you at rehab?

Beware of doing too much exercise. If they help with balance and gait, that is good, but lots of exercise to encourage ROM could be counter-productive.

Count me amongst the people who avoid public hot pools. I'd use a public swimming pool after my wound was completely healed, but not a hot pool. It's too small and too hot and it's always seemed like a breeding ground for infection to me.

Interesting mode of recovery -- I"ll look forward to hearing how it goes for you. I have a hot tub at home that is a beacon of cleanliness but have avoided soaking the knee for fear of swelling which seems to happen for me rather easily. I have soaked in it with my new knee elevated out of the water which allows me to get heat on the quad and hamstring which they like. I don't think I would be comfortable in a public hot tub for fear of infection.
