Re: Two picture of me once home

Latest update - 7 weeks + 3 days since THR operation.
Doing twice weekly physiotherapy gym based 'Lower limb rehab' sessions. The first was pretty scary, as they resistance machines challenged me. Completed third session today and already feeling the improvement and increased resistances by 5lb today on some machines. Yay! Needed ice, a sleep and lots of cups of tea to recover the first time, but only ice and tea the second, and just tea today!
Its interesting being with 6 other people who have leg problems of some sort, we all have different regimes to follow and look very serious a lot of the time. Of course there is always a bottleneck on one machine or other and it seems to be the leg press one at this week. Its like a Pilates Reformer, and if I had the space I'd consider getting one of those. I have done Pilates for many years - mat-based more recently, but loved the Reformer sessions.
I have bought some ankle weights - and a thicker Pilates mat (my yoga one was to thin) and together with the Therabands from the physio I am all set for home work outs to complete the three a week that are recommended by my physio.
The hospital here buys into this gym in some way so we get the 8 sessions for free, then we can join the council run gym at a discount for another 3 months. Its a great system, and has inspired me to consider joining a local gym (with pool , spa and sauna as well of course - lets not be to sweaty and keen about this, and remember the little luxuries in life) for a year to really give myself the opportunity to rehab myself at my own speed - which includes rest and relaxation as well - (see above).
What else has changed?
Oh yes, I can now walk into the town, about 25-30 minutes down a steep hill and back again to include a bit of shopping -- :thumb: of course. I bought a dress for my 55th birthday party - am so pleased with it, can't wait to accessorise it!
My first time into town was last week, and coming back up the hill was a bit sore, but have done it 4 times now and each time its easier.
As a few people have mentioned, I get a bit of pain on the front top of my right thigh when I raise my leg. I think this is my hip flexor, and having chatted to my physion and read a great book about stretching I am working on gently relaxing into a stretch to work on this. Apparently tight hip flexors stop the gluteals doing their job properly, which leads - amongst other things to impinged hip movement and lower back pain - all of which I recognise as being things that grew worse alongside my hip pain pre-op. So I want to try to stop them re-developing by baby-stretching my hip flexor(s). I've had tight hip flexors for years- especially on my arthritic side and no amount of stretching loosened it, so I hope now it will.
Other things
L
ove the walking - my husband says I am so much more 'fluid' this week - and its not all the red wine at the weekend, I promise! :cheers_wine:
Truly though it is a good description. Partly because I am learning to walk with a longer stride once again - and to 'heel and toe' rather than walk as if in a hobble skirt.

I get stabbing pains in my thigh sometimes, and the area below my incision is tender, both respond to massage quite well. Still can't really lie on my side at night comfortably - even with a pillow between my legs, and roll onto my back by default. I tried lying on my operated side a few time and that is most uncomfortable.
Still can't get into the bath either as its got really high sides. Can't wait to manage that as I love a deep bath by candle light with a good book....:bathtub:

I'm going to ice, elevate and rest now whilst I watch TV, so will love you all and leave you.:sleepz:
Best wishes to all

Re: Two picture of me once home

Glad things are improving, Vikki.....just don't "leave us" for too long! I love reading your progress reports!

Re: Two picture of me once home

Thanks Jamie,
Latest is that I got into the bath last night... lovely and relaxing. I was surprised how sensitve my scar was to the heat, so didn't stay in too long.
I have been walking a lot, and have a pedometer to keep track. On Saturday I walked 10,000 + steps, and was so thrilled. Only got tired in the last 10 minutes. This was aggrevated by the fact that I had forgotten where I had parked the car. We were walking up a gorgeous river valley and the river twists and turns whilst the road is straight. To avoid walking along the road we had to follow all the long bends of the riverside which made it a lot longer to find the correct lay-by in which I had parked!
I am now able to use my 'kneeling stool' comforably again. I find it great when using a PC as you don't lean from the hips so much, although it can be hard on the knees.
I've got a bit of tenderness below my scar which I am watching, but hope it is part of the healing process.
Off for a walk now before it rains.
:yay:

Re: Two picture of me once home

You are my inspiration and hope Vikki - thank you

Re: Two picture of me once home

What a recovery Vikki, congratulations!

Re: Two picture of me once home

That's a great report, Vikki!!! So glad to hear it. Just take things slow and easy and you're going to be really surprised at the progress you make in the coming weeks and months.

Re: Two picture of me once home

Hi All, Its now about 10 weeks since my surgery and I see my OS on the 31st October for a review. I went into work for an Occupational Health Assessment today (its probably only available in bigger institutions/companies?), to decide if I was able to take up my original job, or return temporarily on limited duties - either way on a phased return to work. Its been decided that as my job is physically demanding and I am not very good at saying 'no' when asked to do things, I may be better to wait a little longer. I've been sent home to think about it and consider how I managed today. I was shattered after only 3 hours in the work environment, and that was not even doing the job, just getting up and down stairs, grappling with fire doors, long corridors and concentrating on talking to multiple people!
I feel a little bit of a fraud as I can actually walk a long way now and cope quite well with things.

Things I can't do yet:
Put my right sock on
Bend to the floor without putting my operated leg out to the back
Do this repetitively
Reach up far or across things (slightly twisting I suppose), without my hip area feeling uncomfortably stretched
Squat
Lift my foot higher than a low chair seat
Sit comfortably in a sofa for long - even harder getting up out of it!
Pull on tight fitting long boots
Wear heels

Things I can do now:
Sit on a 'normal' height lavatory seat
Tie my right shoe lace (just - but not every time is successful yet)
Take my right sock off - using left toes to slide it off my right foot
Kneel/ lie on the floor AND get up again (slowly)
Stand at the counter to prepare a meal without having to sit down part way through
Drive an automatic car
Ride a bike (an exercise one - not tried my real one yet)
Dance - carefully! :4_1_112:
So I am going to think about when I should return to work, and wait to talk to my surgeon before commiting myself. I think I am very fortunate to work for an institution that allows me this flexibility and recognises the need for a slow return to achieve long term productivity. I'll post again after seeing my OS on 31st.

best wishes

Vikki

Vikki....your two statements are at odds with each other!!! You are NOT a fraud. What you ARE is still recovering, as witnessed by the list of things you can and cannot do yet. You are not ready to go back to work yet...even part time. Allow yourself the time you need to properly heal and resist the urge to feel any guilt about it. You will be a much better emploiyee when you DO go back if you do it this way.

Vikki

What an interesting checklist; it almost matches exactly where I am in the recovery process - except maybe the "Wear heels".

I can add a couple to the Can't Do list - things that annoy me

Wash/dry my feet properly
Cut my toenails
Pick things up off the floor without holding on. :sigh:

I guess I have been a bit 'stiff' in the lumbar region ever since my spinal decompression so maybe that is the problem more than the hips. I am reluctant to push the bending too much, though, for fear of 'breaking' the 90 degree rule.

Are there any 'safe' stretches that would help a stiff back?

Great list of things you can do Vikki! Real progress.

I agree with Jamie - wait on the work return. Time to really get this recovery done. Then work won't be so hard.

Roger - do you do any core stability exercises for your back? I suggest you get referred to PT by your GP. They can work to get that back stiffness under control but it is important you do the exercises correctly. I asked my GP for a referral and it really did help.

Great news Vikki but I echo Jamie and Jaycey. I went straight back to full time work last week at 12 weeks post op and after a mixed first week which improved as it went on I've found this week tougher in emotional terms - I'm a grumpy old woman by the time I get home and my general hip area is quite sore in different places - I think it's because I'm sitting down so much at a computer whereas at home I was on the go for most of the day. Also not helped by a damaged/trapped radial nerve in my right arm.Definitely wished I'd taken a couple of weeks more.

Hi Jaycey

No core stability exercises now, I'm sorry to say. I did some in 2007 but, of course, I've forgotten them all.

I'll try asking the (hip) physio lady on Monday. :thumb:

Thanks

Been busy for a while - and trying ot catch up with everyone a bit. I return to work on Monday so making the most of my freedom. Been carrying on with the gym resistance exercises twice a week and went to Pilates class for the first time since well before operation this Sunday. Found it OK, limited which exercises I did and told the instructor I would be doing this and why. He was not particularly helpful, but left me to it. He is not my old instructor as she works from a different place, and as this class is part of my gym subscription I thought I'd try it.
Getting some pain after exercise just on my scar really, so rubbing in that Bio Oil to release the scar tissue. Some ice helps to. I tried an 'elliptical cross-trainer' at the gym, hysterical, the 'paddles' slid away from me as I got on the nearest on, I grabbed the handles, which smartly wiggled backwards and forwards, unbalanced me further and slapped me on in the face. I then managed to get the other foot onto the floating 'paddle' and hovered with flailing arms until the handles came near enough to grab. FInally, my dignity in tatters, I tried to work the machine. Are they designed by sadists with a sense of humour? I must have looked so funny - but did get it to work eventually, and actually quite enjoyed it.
Its my birthday this Saturday and my husband has organised a party for me at a local pub - should be great fun. He was inspired to do this because he met a post THR friend at a party who was dancing madly 6 months post operatively, and he thought - 'that could be Vikki'!
We'll see, I hope so!
Have been reading the threads and will come back soon!

xx

Sounds like you are doing brillantly Vikki! You description of the cross trainer made me laugh. But once you get the hang of it that is a very good workout.

Enjoy your party Saturday. You are celebrating your new pain free life as well as a Birthday!

Good luck with returning to work Vikki. You have come a long way since surgery, and using the eliptical sounds great. Wishing you a Happy Birthday with your new hip, and enjoy your party!

Happy Hippy Birthday on Saturday Vikki and best of luck with your return to work :dancy:

Happy birthday Sat Vikki, have a great time

Hello everyone, I've been away for a while and its nice to read everyone's posts. I went back to work on 14th November and have been exhausted ever since. The University I work at has been very supportive, letting me do half days and doing work place assessments of my chair, working environment and activities so its been a great help.
I don't know about other people, but I find interacting with other people exhausting since my operation. Not sure why. Anyway the last two weeks I did full weeks and although tired after the first (which was 6 days actually), I found the second easier. My husband says I look tired, but I don't feel so absolutely worn out as I did.
I'm on leave now for Christmas, I'm taking a week of my holiday to make it a 2 week break whilst my eldest son who is back from University, as I want this to be a good Christmas since I had flu last year and was in bed when it was his 21st birthday on Boxing Day.
OK, since last posting I have had a great 55th birthday party - danced and had a lovely evening.
Then on Saturday did more dancing - its amazing, just a little stiff the next day, and thats in my lower back not my hip. I managed to wear moderately high heels as well for some of the time - had to take them off after a few hours and kick them under the table, but felt good having managed it!
I went to London last week for work - not been to that building since before THR, and it was magical being able to walk from the Tube down the Strand without dosing myself on painkillers beforehand and worrying how far it was and whether I would be able to make it.
I have lost one and a half stone overall now, which has made me feel so much better, and joined the gym, which I go to twice a week at least. Apart from nasty cold/cough which has dogged me for the last few weeks I feel so much better its wonderful.
At my follow up check I told my OS that he had 'given me my life back'and kept pumping his hand. He was quite pleased actually and although it was a bit dramatic, it was from the heart.
We've just returned from a mammoth Christmas shop around the town - and my hip doesn't even ache or feel stiff.
I can now tie my shoe laces and put a sock on most days. Still can't do my toe nails - but thats not to bad. I just need to work on my psoas to loosen it, which is a slow and steady process I am discovering - after years of it being out of proper use. Same with my left (non-operated) leg, which has muscle twinges occasionally. I think it is having to lengthen as it no longer takes all the strain. I find a tennis ball rubbed on my outer-upper quad on that leg relieved some of the symptoms.
I am so pleased to see how those of us who had replacements in the summer are all progressing and re-claiming our lives.

A very Happy Christmas and a joyful New Year to everyone on the forum.

What a delightful post Vikki! Thank you for sharing. I am so glad that yours is such a wonderful success story! I just two days ago cut my toenails for the first time so it will happen for you too!

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
