TKR TKR problems after 6 years

By the way, @keith55 , since you haven't yet seen a surgeon and have no surgery date, I have moved this thread to the Knee Surgery Pre-Op area.

@keith55
I've merged your newest thread with your previous one about you knee playing up. Let's keep them all in one thread, please.

@keith55, I'm sorry to read that you're having trouble with your TKR more than six years after your surgery. I'm even sorrier that you have to wait so long for appointments to have it checked out. On January 9 you said you'd made a GP appointment, which wasn't until today (4 weeks later). Now you have to wait another 2 or 3 weeks to get an x-ray? I guess these are normal wait times in the United Kingdom? I'm just used to much shorter wait times here when you have an actual problem (it can take long to get an appointment for a checkup, though, or to see a specialist); I feel bad that so much time has to pass while you wait and worry about what's going on with your knee. Good luck!

I've got an x-ray appointment quicker than expected - this Tuesday 11 Feb

We like the principle of the NHS (the burden is shared, no one has to go bankrupt) but we don't like the lack of government funding and lack of recruitment.

I'm hoping it won't need surgery!

Maybe "TKR problems after 6 years" is a better title.

Good luck Keith. Whilst we all know the NHS is starved of cash at the moment, they often surprise us.
Where are you going to get mended?

Thanks Tykey. You live where both my parents came from. I'm in Cheltenham.
Managed the supermarket shop ok today pm - I parked near the trolleys.
Rested up afterwards (!) and the knee became warm again - back to icing and elevating now.

(Wednesday or United?)

My father was an avid Owls supporter and I have followed him but I also have a soft spot for Liverpool given what happened in that FA Cup match v Notts Forest

Help!

I just had a sharp increase in localised pain and warmth at the lower outside of my kneecap where there is persistent swelling - I had my leg up at the time.

I remember my first surgeon said with arthritis it changes "slowly" and "you can't damage it".
I guess that isn't true when you have an implant that may be loose.

Can the pain with a loose TKR (if that is what it is) get worse quickly?

I have my x-ray tomorrow - getting there and back is going to be a challenge.

I hope the X-ray shows what’s going on. It must be maddening to have these pains, this inflammation, and not have answers yet. I hope the pain eases up.

I had the X-ray ok. Need to wait for radiologists report now,

Just when I got back the severe catching pain struck again. Just on the outside (right) of my left kneecap towards the base. Any ideas what might cause that?

I just rang the GP surgery reception to see if the knee x-ray had come through. This was a receptionist, not a doctor, and I was told "normal - no further action required". I have a doctor's appointment next week (4 March) to discuss this.

The persistent swelling outside and below the kneecap is still there along with the feeling of stiffness. I've reduced the sharp pains by doing less e.g. having food shopping delivered. The other right knee (which has some arthritis) is beginning to complain, maybe because I'm relying on it more.

Earlier last year (late summer or early autumn) I tripped on a rough pavement and fell on the left TKR knee - right on the left kneecap! it hurt at the time, of course, but I thought I had got away with it. Towards the end of the year I noticed an increase in the giving way feeling. My left leg is now a bit longer (after TKR) and previously (after TKR) the knee would kind of leap forward if I misjudged an up slope and drove my left foot into the slope. Maybe misjudging the slope is to do with the body's positioning system. This happened quite rarely - about once a month with no pain.

But more recently the giving way feeling was becoming daily and happening even when walking inside. This was before the step ups exercise (Jan 4) which triggered the pain and swelling in the left knee. So, despite this x-ray result I will want to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

I live in Cheltenham, UK. The first surgeon I saw (in late 2010) was Mr Harminder Gosal. He didn't want to operate on me because of my age. I was able to get about a bit even visiting some cathedrals in the summer, for the architecture, but I couldn't stand for any length of time - browsing bookshelves meant grabbing book(s) and finding a chair to sit on - not always available. This was due to arthritis. And there was the constant grinds you down arthritis pain.

After trying a cortisone injection (little change) Gosal suggested a second opinion and I had seen Mr John Mackinnon once by mistake so I saw him and he went ahead with the operation. Mackinnon has retired now and I have since found out that he was marginally more of a hip man than a knee man: Gosal is a knee specialist. However I don't think Gosal would say (or mean) "told you so" but it would be at the back of my mind.

edit:
Having the operation meant I could go on holidays again: Australia (twice), Istanbul, Madrid and Naples/Sorrento plus Hadrian's Wall, Yorks Dales, Isle of Wight and mid Wales - and I could do country walks again though I found out the left knee complained after about 4 miles so that was when to break for lunch.

The only other Cheltenham surgeon with more knee revisions (than Gosal) is Gennadii Kalap but I've never met him and I'm not sure I can demand to see a particular surgeon? I don't want to travel further for surgery.

Sorry for the length of this and please don't ask me to defend NHS delays.
