TKR both knees

Darned if you do and darned if you don't! Try being a little less intense with it and do fewer reps. And space it out during the day so your knee gets plenty of rest in between. That might give you some relief.

Take care, keep us posted, we care.

Kaye, plastic surgery for knee scars may not be needed. If you go to the recovery forum and look on the second entry "Knee scars" and look at the pics of my scars I posted lately--you'll see what I mean.

I figure that in a couple of years, my scars will be barely discernible. It may be a combination of my OS's skill, the under the skin dissolvable stitches, and just the way my body heals.

To tag someone so they know you want a response from them you must type @their user name (be sure to spell is correctly) and then a semi-colon. When you post the name turns blue and the semi-colon becomes a colon and they are notified.

Take care.

My mom had a knee replacement a few years back and unless you really look for it you can't see her scar. Just a little bit of a pale line.

Thanks. I did look over the photos, squeamish but doable.

I didn't know how to "tag" or know what it is, but I do now.

I got accepted to the Mayo Clinic for an initial appointment with x-rays on July 10th which happens to be our 41st anniversary. It's at 7 am so we have to either get up at 4 am and drive 2 hours or stay overnight in Rochester. I think I will take the drive since I would still have to get up early to get there.

Hello Kaye!

Before I had my first knee done I weighed 435 pounds and am 5'9,! It makes me sick when doctors use weight as an excuse. After having both knees replaced two months apart I am proud to say I have lost over 140 pounds because I could exercise again! My surgeon put it something like this " Do you want to live a life of quality, or just quantity ?". Of course I chose quality and even though I have had a few little bumps in the road of life since then, I would not change a thing! I love living again and being active!

Rest Assured thanks for sharing that. It makes me feel very assured, you sure have the right sign name, :) Congrats on the weight loss, that's amazing! Mine has been really slow but I have changed my whole way of eating. It sure wouldn't hurt to be able to walk around or maybe go swimming but I can't with all the pain I am in. I'm lucky if I can stand long enough to make a couple eggs in the morning. We have a couple hour car ride today to see our daughter and I'm wondering how that is going to go.

Congratulations! Les us all hope that everything goes well and that you soon will have the surgery that will help you reclaim your life!

Thanks referee54 I am excited and of course more than a bit scared...

Watching a re run of Monk "Mr. Monk on Wheels" where he is shot in the leg and in a wheel chair. Trying to walk from the couch to the wheel chair and no one really being careful. It actually had me laughing. When I had my foot surgery years ago that was me. 16 weeks of no walking or weight bearing at all. I hope the knee surgery is not that long before I can stand. From what I've read of others recovery it seems to be better than that.

Went on a 2 hour ride today for fathers day to meet our daughter. She took us to a restaurant that had booths in a step up and it was so nice to not have to bend my knee getting in and out of the booth. I must say I had a good day pain-wise. Hope it continues and I can sleep. I wonder if all the exercises I've been doing have helped make my leg stronger. I was really given up and doing nothing because of the pain until I found the advice on this forum.

We're so glad that the forum has given you information and advice that is helping you prepare for TKR. And you'll be up and walking on the new knee at least by the next day if you have no problems---like low BP that makes you feel faint.

The really hard part for most is the waiting for the surgery. Once it's done, then recovery starts and you must do it! And you will be so glad you did. Take care, keep us posted, we care.

:)Thank you so much! I exercise regularly now, and have changed the way I eat. I love life and the fact that I am so much lighter has given me more confidence again. I am ready to get the rest of the weight off, and get back to a healthy weight! I am proud of you for the accomplishments you have made already! Just remember, when you are able to start exercising, no matter what type of exercise, the weight will come off more easily!

Thanks RestAssured I will watch it.
Bottomshollow low bp is no fun sorry you had/have that.

The 2 hour ride there and back didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Had the seat pushed all the way back and my legs stretched out, my husband did all the driving. Our daughter took us to a nice restaurant that had the booths on a one step platform, perfect for me to just sit without any knee bending to get up from. I think my knees are calming down a bit from the twist I did 3 or 4 weeks ago. Still hurt a lot but not as bad when resting.

I'm still feeling a little overwhelmed. Seeing another doctor this week but he wanted my xrays and I didn't get them yet, I have one day to get them. ha wonder if I can pull that off. The internet service hasn't been working steady lately and I need to get them out again, so that is slowing me down with my work and with research. Boy can't even find a phone number anymore without the internet, no phone books.

Well the Twin City Othorpedics clinic messed up my appointment. I saw a doctor for my elbow in 2005 once,
who now works there, so somehow they automatically made my appointment with him, even though I asked for another one.

Then I made another appointment with another doctor and it turns out he is connected with TCO as well and they never made that appointment either.

Two different doctor appointments never recorded and made into one appointment with the WRONG doctor.

AND then I was told I had an appointment with ANOTHER doctor I've never heard of! So that made FOUR different doctors.
When I explained it the lady said it would be best for me to see previous one time elbow doctor! I told her but I needed a knee doctor and she said well this other previous elbow doctor is very good too. argh. But I could certainly see the doctor I want. So scheduled again, we'll see what happens.

Gives me a very bad feeling about the whole place. yikes. I think I will contact the clinic manager and alert them to this problem. Very odd.

Restassured asked me about my infections I got in previous surgeries so I am copying and pasting it here to keep track of it.

The first one was a Staph infection, is what they told me. It was when I had my cesarean. I knew one of the staples had pulled out but no one cared. They sent me and new baby home and later that night I was into a fever like crazy, hot and cold, rushed back to the hospital for another week. Then the cesarean was infected for three months until it finally closed, total bed rest.

The second one was my foot operation, that wound didn't close for 6 months but the doctor wouldn't confirm or tell me what it was. She was covering her but, I was not up on it and in sooooo much pain. I tried to switch doctors but when I went to them they would say she was a good doctor and a friend and refuse to see me again. My PT finally told me to stop taking so many Ibuprofen because she thought it impaired healing. The wound finally healed, but the foot has been painful since 2005 mostly due to Plantar fasciitis.

Hi KayKaye,
Sorry about the appointment craziness. Maybe the little bit of extra time is a good thing? It can give you a chance to sort out and compare? Best of luck. Hang in there.

Thanks Nyland, yes I think I will end up at the Mayo clinic anyhow. I just thought I should check out a few doctors as well.

Hi KayeKaye and welcome to this wonderful site. I have been reading your posts and want to go back to your question of tooth infection spreading to your knee replacement (once done of course). My friends husband had a tiny tooth infection that was not picked up on the blood tests in the pre-op and unfortunately this did affect his recovery. He spent an extra 2 weeks in hospital on anti -biotics and other things before they would release him.
I mentioned this to my surgeon and he shrugged and said "1-2% only are affected", this was enough for me anyway and made an appointment with my dentist just to be on the safe side. Sure enough there was a tooth that needed some root canal work and when I explained I was due for a TKR in a few weeks my dentist suggested extraction to be safe. It was a back tooth so I agreed straight away.
Speak to someone about all your worries as and when they arise or address them on here, believe me there will be quite a few people on this site who have experienced everything you are going through and will be able to allay your fears.
Best of luck, Viv xx

Thanks Coniglietta. Come to think of it, I did go to the Dentist a couple weeks after my foot surgery in 2005, pure agony foot in cast in wheelchair. Neither the Dentist or Podiatrist mentioned any concern with an infection. Wonder if it's a new discovery or if they both were just incompetent. I still have the same Dentist but will be seeing a specialist for this tooth. whew.

Custom Fit Total Knee Replacement Surgery

The doctor I am seeing Monday does Custom Fit Total Knee Replacement Surgery where they make the replacement according to your MRI so it is a custom fit. Sounds interesting, is this normal or a new procedure?

Has anyone gotten this?
