Hi all, thanks for your words of encouragement. I,m going ok so far, the few niggling problems I have had are I,m sure of my own doing.
The main one that bugs my walking is soreness under the ball of my foot, hard to explain but every step feels like I,m treading on a golf ball, my guess is it,s probably just the way I,m throwing my weight when I walk.

The light headed ness from the anaesthetic slowly wearing off, I didn't,t have spinal but think I might discuss it with Dr for next time. The actual hip feels good, it's all these little side issues that has impeded my walking.

This forums a wealth of info and believe me I am forever grateful for it and the dedication of the people on here. Hugs to you all.

Tibs Great to hear that the anaesthesia effects are wearing off.....completely agree that is all those little niggly feelings and/ or pains that can make you a bit unhappy just after getting home. Is that ball feeling under your non operated foot..if so I had the same for the first two weeks....but it gradually went off and is fine now... Of course it was superseded by other niggly problems and they too disappeared!!!
Each day will see you getting stronger and stronger.....thinking of you and sending very best wishes your way...take care....Chrissie xxxx

Happy Nanny, no it is the operated one, thanks for your well wishes.:)

Tibs, there is so much twisting and mangling of the torso that goes on during surgery, it is very easy for things to be out of alignment. Also make sure you're using your fully allowed dosage of pain meds. If your directions say one or two every 4-6 hours, then for now take two every four.

Hi there Julie Tibs how are you today ?

You are on Paracetamol aren't you? Pretty much par for the course with our surgeons here in OZ :)

Hugs from the mainland xx

Thanks for replies ,yes taking Panadol 4 hourly, the lumpy feeling under my foot is slowly subsiding, leg and foot has been swelling so I,m spending most of the time with leg elevated.

Hi Tibs. Glad to see you on the other side. I hope you are on more than just Panadol? I was on targin (sp) Celebrex panadine forte and all the blood thinners, iron and stool softeneners!!!!!!

I hope you continue to go well

hi Vetgirl , only panadol at this stage i was on Naprosyn but only for 5 days post op. Pain is ok but leg , ankle and foot swelling for some reason. Thanks for your well wishes.. :)

Tibs hope your swelling goes down soon....I found my knee and leg swelled and was very hard.....I put it down to those awful compression tights!! I found sitting down for long periods didn't help...so it was a good excuse to nip back to bed with my legs up!! My knee still swells a bit after too much activity.....over here in the UK we only take paracetamol with codeine in the first week after the op. After that paracetamol alone....which sometimes I found not enough. Hope you continue to improve........it's certainly a bit of a roller coaster!! Cheers Chrissie xxx

Hi Julie Tibs

Swelling is quite normal for the first 3 to 6 months after surgery for some folk.

Swelling from your thigh right down to, and including your foot is also quite common.

I found that a very short walk around the house every hour using my walking aide, really helped to keep the fluid moving.

Elevating your leg slightly and apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, a few times a day is the trick. I pretty much had my icepacks on all the time, even slept with them.

Hugs xx

Thanks Hoppy Nanny & Poppet, nice to know it is part and parcel of the healing process , I imagine and hope it will subside as I get more active, my body certainly isn't used to resting this much ... heehee:

It is hard Julie Tibs when you are normally so active to have to take it easy - no doubt about it recovery is a marathon not a sprint, at least that is how it has felt for me :) - good times ahead though my good friend.

Hugs from the mainland xx

Tibs, Remember to go slow and make sure that you do eat. I'm happy that you are doing so good. Take care, tashia

Thanks tashia, I am doing well I think, the only thing I,m not sure about is when to go from two crutches to one then to sticks etc, I walk ok one one crutch but not sure if I should be doing it two weeks post op, I wasn't ordered any physio so not sure about it.

Tibs I had to do two crutches until 4 weeks then am still on one crutch st 10 weeks because of a limp. But I've absorbed all the advice on this site and I'm going to use it until the limp goes, without worrying or beating myself up about it (yah...I'm learning). I can walk about indoors for about 50% of the time without it but get uncomfortable. I think, if you need them use them.......take care and hope all else going well......Chrissie xxxx

@Hoppyadvice on the site, thanks for sharing your experience too. The other day we had a front page story in our local newspaper about the anterior approach, it photographed a youngish Mum and her toddler, and the story was about the procedure but it made it sound like she just had the THR then took her toddler out and was able to run around with him.

It didn't mention anything about walking aids at all, and literally said people were up and about only hours after their surgery. while i know the anterior approach is a lot less invasive i do feel the story was exaggerated to the extent that i had somebody that read it say to me "How come you need crutches if you had that same approach"?

Tibs yes I know so well how people make you feel inadequate.... A celebrity on our Strictly Come Dancing , Craig Revel Horwoods said he had hip replacement and was pirouetting around the stage at 4 weeks.... Failed to mention he had hip resurfacing not replacement . But even so he set such a bad example as he was back to work in a week....so everyone else feels like a malingerer..... I've stopped reading all the hype now and progress as well as I can...... Keep smiling! Chrissie x
