SuperPath/Olsen/dysplasia

Hipmama, I have just gotten caught up with your thread. I had Dr. Olsen for both of my THR my last one was April 12th. I would recommend him to everyone. He was my man from the very first visit. I had gone to one other OS at the Minnesota Orthopedic Clinic. He was recommended to me by someone who had their hip replaced by this doctor and one of the first things he said was " You're pretty young to be looking at both hips being replaced". He wanted me to try some medication and come back in 6 weeks....what medication was going to do for me walking around with bone spurs and bone on bone, I had no idea. I knew he wasn't the doctor for me so I continued to look around and research that's when I found Dr. Olsen on the internet. I read about the superpath technique. The more I read the more I liked it and found out that he's here in Minnesota so I called and got an appointment. Dr. Olsen came into my first consult with a prosthesis and showed us what it looks like and explained how he does the surgery. He looked at the x-rays and MRI that I had brought and told me exactly how he could help me. He examined me for pain levels and flexibility which was really bad. That day I scheduled the dates for both of my surgeries and from then on I felt so much better about having surgery. The surgery had gone exactly as he said he would. If I had a question for him he would call me, not his assistant. He is very skilled and has a good bedside manner. Do you have an appointment with him?

Oh thank you thank you thank you sandybeach! This makes me feel so much better! I am 39 and I know its awfully young for this but its also too young to live in crazy pain. I can't grocery shop, clean my house, properly parent my six and ten year old children or even work at this point. He sounded so supportive when he emailed. I've had three preservation surgeries and have no improvement.
Which hospital were you at for surgery? Do you feel like he is advertising or kind of promoting surgery at all or his he selective in who he can help? I don't want to sound rude or ungrateful about him at all but I also don't want someone who says he's willing just for his business sake. I hope that doesn't sound awful... I am really guessing he's not that way but would feel better hearing it! Does he do anything besides SuperPath?
I would love to talk on the phone sometime if you are willing? I'm so nervous and speaking is often easier. I can't figure out if there is a way to privately or not so I could give you my number?
I see Dr. Olsen tomorrow at 4:00. He had me schedule at the end of the day due to the "complex nature of my situation" as he said. He sounded so genuine and caring. I see a Summit ortho doctor tomorrow as well and then another surgeon at twin cities ortho later this month. I will be curious how they suggest we handle the partial union of my trochanter and will also be seeing my spine surgeon because of those screws in my back affecting my glutes. So much going on, I'm really drained and scared. I want to address things and do my research. What I fear the most is that replacements won't take away my pain. I've had injections so I know the bulk of my pain is joint but I worry about the instability and how this will be handled with replacements.
Thanks a million for writing. I feel better already and I'm so happy you're doing so well now and speak so highly of Dr. Olsen. It's just what I wanted to hear!!

Hipmama It was the Twin Cities Ortho that I went not Minnesota Ortho.. I went to the one in Anoka. I wasn't impressed at all. I live north of the twin cities so going to Dr. Olsen was a trip but it was well worth it. I had my surgery in St. Francis hospital. I think that's the only one he operates out of. You can private message me your phone number and I will give you a call. Just let me know what time is good. Let me know how your appointment goes.

Wonderful. I sent a PM with my info :) thanks a lot!

Hipmama, Someone who was a classical ballerina does NOT have a low pain threshhold! Being a ballerina involves a lot of pain, from what I have heard. I think it is good that you are going to different doctors to find out what can be done. I hope that you find the right surgeon to deal with the issues you are facing.

Hipmama, SuperPATH is an approach, and it can be adapted as needed to deal with a variety of problems. It is true, as Jo said, that the modifications will mean that it isn't "minimally invasive" any longer, but one of the strengths of SuperPATH is that these modifications can be made, surgeons can use whatever kind of implant is best for the patient, etc. As an orthopedic surgeon/joint replacement specialist, Dr. Olson should be thoroughly qualified to deal with the whole range of problems that can arise. There was a big article about him in the Univ of Minnesota alumni magazine recently. (My husband got three degrees from Minnesota.) They are very proud to have someone of his caliber operating in Minnesota.

Thanks BeckyR! I agree, ballet is brutal! I can deal with pain pretty well. The comment is coming from a surgeon who allowed oral oxycodone as the only post op pain control for my open dislocation and debridements. Never a drip or IV meds and says people should be med free within a week of surgery! Ya right. You broke my bone and shaved a bunch of stuff and then screwed me back together. I didn't use more than the oral meds but that is not a typical post op system for pain control in my experience. I got more after my csection which wasn't nearly as painful!
Anyway, I have a good feelings about Olsen. I think he will be very helpful. I've learned so much about hips recently and have lots of questions for him but I think he will be a great option. I'm just hoping he agrees that there is an option for me other than living this way.
Thanks again for your reply!!

Hipmama, I'm sure there is an option -- Jo said so, too -- but it is a matter of finding the right surgeon. The best surgeons will refer you to someone else if it calls for something outside their areas of expertise.

BeckyR is there a link for that article from the U of M? I would be interested in reading.....I work as a County Employee for the U of M so I have a connection with them.

sandybeach, I don't know if there is a link. We get the magazine in the form of a hard copy. The article's focus was on SuperPath, that there are only 10 surgeons worldwide who use it, and that Dr. Olson is one of them. I wish I still had the issue to tell you more, but it was their most recent issue. You can probably check online and find a link.

Hi, sandybeach, I looked online and found the alumni magazines, but couldn't find the article in question. I did see it in one of those we received, but for some reason can't find it now. So sorry!
