TKR Still pain at 10 weeks po

I’m so depressed today. I try so hard to stay positive but some days it’s so hard to be positive. Sometimes i feel i’ll never walk normally or without pain again.
I'm so sorry to hear you are struggling physically and emotionally. I empathize: for a long time, I felt like every step forward was followed immediately by a step backward!

Depression is such a common part of recovery that we have an article about it: Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it. I know it's hard to do positive self-talk when you are feeling down about your recovery. Give yourself the grace to be sad. Then, treat yourself to something that makes you happy.

You will get through this. In the meantime, we are all here for you!

I appreciate everyone’s advice and encouragement on this website so much.

I'm so sorry you are having a setback. This is so common in this up and down recovery. You start feeling better and then overdo it, only to end back up possibly worse than you were before. We are here for you, we've all done it! I just wanted to agree about the going down stairs, that habit of going one at a time is so strong that it takes a long time to overcome it, even when you are feeling great. After I was able to finally go downstairs with each leg, often the next few times I tried it, I might have pain again and have to take it one at a time. I truly zig-zagged up and down with this. For every time I could go down fine, the next couple of times I couldn't. It will come with time. You might find one day you are just doing it without thinking and by the time you get to the bottom of the stairs you are surprised!

Hoping each day will see little improvements and that the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter each day.

I’m back whining again lol. In everyone’s experience, how long does it take before you could sit down for more than 20 minutes without your leg aching so that you have to get up abs walk. abs when you get up and walk and it hurts to walk for a while. I’m 15 weeks tomorrow. I’m doing gentle stretches and some walking snd that’s it. is this normal ?

While everyone is different, yes, this is normal. I remember with my first TKR not being able to sit at a desk for very long before my knee would complain about it. This second knee is different. I'm able to sit for extended periods of time with it bent. Go figure! Stiffness when you get up is normal too for several months, I still have it if I've sat for awhile on the couch. I'm 5+months post-op.

Time is your best ally..... believe it or not, at 3.5 months post-op, you are still healing. I still have tender areas around my knee at 5+ months.

I have tender spots at my knee. My ROM is slowly improving though. What concerns me is that I still get pain too when walking. It’s only bad when i first get up after sitting a while and still some pain while walking. Should I be pain free while walking at this stage? A lot of people have no pain at my stage. Thanks so much for responding to me.

Should I be pain free while walking at this stage?
Short answer - not necessarily. Yes, some people are. But plenty are not. Please don't compare your recovery to any other recovery. That knee will heal at its own pace.

The time it takes you to "start up" after you've been sitting for a while will gradually decrease. For me, it was sort of a painful stiffness at first, and then just stiffness, and then nothing.

That’s encouraging. Thanks so much.

Hi there!! I’m getting around more but i’m having a lot of muscle pain in both calves in back of my knees. What does this mean and what could i do about it?

It probably means your legs are trying to unlearn behaviors from before surgery when they were doing what they could to ease your pain. I found it was almost like having to learn to walk all over again. And I thought I was doing great … then had knee #2 done and started all over again!! I found gently massaging my leg muscles to be helpful.

Hi @FourCats , my thoughts exactly. Training the right leg and foot to step in a straight line, heel to toe motion took a lot of focus early on. My left leg struggled to adjust to the repaired, straightened leg and it continues to struggle as my right leg gaims in strength, stability and capability. Then, come mid April, the left gets repaired and it'll be square zero again! Massaging does wonders!

@Anniefannie , I'm sure you'll continue to experience knee start up periods for a while longer. I'm almost 14 weeks out and after sitting for an hour or so, the knee needs a few gingery steps to get going. The crank up time and effort does decrease over time ... and for me, is a lot less than with the old bad knee!

Hi @Anniefannie Just checking in to see how you are feeling. Hope that calf pain improved and that you are finding it easier to get around.
Do let us know how you are doing! Sending positive thoughts your way.

Hi snd thank you for asking. I’m getting around better. My range of motion has improved a lot but i still have soreness when i walk. The problem now is that is misstepped while going downstairs and hurt my non surgical leg. it hurts when i walk on it. i had an mri last week and saw the report on my portal but haven’t spoken to doctor yet. I have what they call hoffas syndrome. It’s the fat pad impingement of the knee. i’m so frustrated. i’ll speak to doctor next week about what to do. i was making good progress on my surgery knee but now im
putting pressure on it. can’t win.

Hang in there. It’s discouraging when we experience a setback but keep thinking positive!
