Abby,
Happy to hear you have an appointment with a revisionist, then you will have some answers.
I am having a revision April 15th, and yes I am nervous! and relieved to know there is something causing my pain, laxity, and there is an answer, revision. They will be replacing all my components. @skigirl just had her spacer replaced. Both are called revisions.
Wishing you all the best as you move forward,

Abby.....YOU ROCK!!!! You made the first and biggest step toward getting a resolution to the appointment. All steps beyond this one will be easier. You have an appointment now.

Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting more than one opinion. Since your daughters live near Charlottesville, you could plan a little visit and see one of the doctors there too. Or maybe try one of the others recommended by your PT.

Dr. Ebert is a revision specialist, so he may be a great choice for you. Please do give us feedback as we are always looking to find those wonderful surgeons we know are out there.

Don't worry.....we'll be here to give you whatever support you need. As previous posters have said, a revision does involve taking out the old hardware and replacing it with new. But....there is less cutting of bone and the recovery is no worse than the original TKR - sometimes even easier. And, if it's what it takes to fix your problem....well, then.....some temporary discomfort would be worth it, wouldn't it?

Jamie is right. Getting another second opinion is a good idea. You certainly don't want revision, but it seems like a possibility. Don't you want to "get it right" this time? I looked up Dr. Ebert and he does have impressive credentials and apparently does revisions, but his bio doesn't stress the revision aspect so just be sure to ask how many revisions he performs each year. I kinda think the Charlottesville connection (a recommended doctor near your daughers) was Kismet.

Thanks Jamie for the encouragement. I'm one of those people who, when I know something has to be done, no matter how scared I am, I want to get it over with. Unfortunately, I won't see him until June 19 because that is his first appointment ..... bad for me, but it does speak well of him and his expertise.
I don't want to go to Charlottesville for a lot of reasons, even though my girls live west of there off of Rt. 81.
So, that's the story. Guess I'll be chatting with you all for quite awhile longer.

I do have one question .... do you think I should wear that elastic support brace or even the shortrunner until I see him? It feels good with the elastic one on, but I don't want to make matters worse. Thanks for any replies.

If it feels better it is OK, worse don't do it.
I agree, I would want to have that appointment on Monday, in our dreams.
Good luck,

It does make it feel better ..... maybe when I'm out and about I'll put it on but when I'm just around home I won't.
Yes, I'd love to be able to get in immediately, but no such luck. But, like I said, it does show he's well thought of and speaks well of his work ..... Union Memorial Hosp. is also linked with Georgetown Univ. Hosp. in D.C.
I mentioned in an earlier post this evening (on the first page) that I wore the elastic today and it really helped. I took it off this evening and it was OK for awhile and then it started up again ... same thing, trouble getting our of a chair, going down steps, and getting in my car. I'm wondering if the whole thing hasn't slipped to the right side. Guess I'll find out.

Mine was a total knee revision but as scared as I was I knew that I had to do it and as it turned out it was not near as bad as the original TKR. I could not be any happier that I had it done.

Hi RunA .... yep, if I could get in Monday to see him and have it done Tuesday, I would. But, it will come around
quickly. For some reason warm weather - Spring and Summer - seem to fly by while Winter seems to go on forever. Well, I guess this year it HAS gone on forever! :tada:

Good to hear you have an appointment with a revisionist. As far as inconveniencing your son by having him take you--think of it this way, getting this revision will help keep you independent and then causing less inconvenience down the road.
If not a Lifeline you might want to at least carry a cell phone around with you. I always carry one when I go outside in the winter--in case I fall on the ice and need to call for help.

I don't see any problem with wearing the brace if it helps you get around better. If there is a problem with the joint itself, a brace will not make it worse. And if the problem is with soft tissue, keeping the area in less pain and irritation should be a positive.

Good to "see" you again kneeper. I did wear the elastic brace today and it really helps. Makes me wonder if the whole thing sort of slid out of place. But then, what do I know. I've asked a girlfriend to go with me when I go to the doctor in Baltimore. I have a lot of trouble asking anyone for help. And, my son's life is so busy, and I hate to ask him and hear, "well, hmmmmm .... I don't know ...... I'll have to see when the time comes." Then I feel like I'm an imposition. I know he's really busy at work and with clients and he never knows what's going to come up ..... but ........ :sorry:
Thanks for checking in with me ..... good to hear from friendly folks.

I have two sons. They are very caring and sensitive but at the same time they're big lugs. I've lately realized that even though they are in their late 20s, they still need a little "pruning" from mom from time to time. Otherwise I get pushed around or put off. One of them started bringing up some perceived flaw of me as a parent recently -- and I cut him short and rattled off a few things about me as a mom he could and ought to appreciate. Oh well, baby steps forward. Glad you have a friend to join you and an appointment lined up.

I hear ya' ..... I've got 3 kids and one of them and her husband would do anything to help me out. And she lives 5 hours away. The other two don't seem to have accepted the fact that "Mom isn't getting any younger," or ..... maybe they just ignore it so they don't feel obligated. Somehow there's always that hemming and hawwing about things.

I hated---absolutely hated---the waiting!!! I am sure that the spring and summer will bring you thes necessary change that you desire so much!

You're right .... waiting is the hardest part. I'd just like to do it and get it over with. But, if I have to wait
2-1/2 months for an appt. with the doctor, I imagine it could be another 2 months before he does the surgery, if it's necessary. I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse because I have not even seen him yet, so who knows. I'm wondering if it somehow has slightly slid out of place. I wore my elastic brace today, and that really makes it feel so much better. After I take it off, it's still good for about an hour ..... then I'm back to where I started. I don't know what I would have done to cause that, if that is what's wrong.

One of my sons announced that he looked forward to the day when he'd take away my driving privileges! I have a tendency to look out the side window at things that interest me and start hitting the shoulder of the road, and he's always hated that.

Wow Mary .... that would upset me if one of my kids said that.

I just told one of my daughters today, phrasing it in such a way that "I might not have to have anything done ..... I might just have strained something." She's the sensitive one and worries. Well, you would think I told her I was having an amputation! She got so upset and asked so many questions.
I've read a lot of websites, but is there one that says what a revision is, why it's done, symptoms, etc. that I could send her. Actually, there might be one right on here. Maybe I'd better look.
She did get me upset I must admit. I don't cherish the thought of this, but neither do I want this pain and balance problem either.

Hi Amber . Just read your thread . Sorry to hear about your knee. Like you said a few post back , "dont put the carriage in front of the horse. " I mean , we wont know till you see the revisionist in 2 months if you will need a revision or not . I can only imagine how frustrated you must be , and your daughters reaction was classic to the news about your knee. I would drive 50 miles each way to take my Dad to appointments during his last 2 years . He never drove and close to the end , he would fall on the buses. So I would ask him when he needed a ride. He would never asked !! I would go with him and make his appointments. It was funny to me , when I picked him up , he would be all dressed up , brushing his few hairs he had on his head. Im like REALLY !! Vanity I guess. But it made me feel great to help him and to show him how I matured and grew as a man . I would even buy him clothes, slippers , underwear, pots and pans. I had a guilt trip because I was a huge dissapointment to him as a high schooler and a young man . I wanted to prove to him that I made it . So it was a honor for me to take him to his appointments and to purchase him underwear and jackets etc. Just to show him !! So dont ever think that you will bother or burden your children , especially your son !! Its very emotional for me typing this because both my parents are gone . I will follow your progress . BTW im 7 weeks out from tkr .

Thanks for responding icep. Your story and mine are very similar. I was an only child in a very sick family (all alcoholics) so I very quickly learned not to ask for anything .... I did it myself. I also took care of my parents before they died .... it was just something you did then. It seems there's always excuses ... my oldest daughter "has 2 kids and can't come" .... my next oldest daughter would come if I asked her to - she and her husband are very tender-hearted, my son took me to the hospital for the TKR but it took so long he had to leave for his job .... he's a Patent Lawyer in D.C.. Friends took me to the Rehab. place and then home. My oldest daughter never did come up to see me during the entire recuperation time ...... I was to come to her! Interesting. So I pretty much just set everything up myself. The longer I wait to go to the doctor the more nervous I get. I guess it's because I don't know what to expect. I just want to know what lies ahead, then I can start to plan for it and be ready to go when the time comes. I honestly don't know what it could be except needing a revision because the symptoms seem to be just like mine. Oh well .... we'll find out soon enough.
