TKR Second time lucky for LTKR

Thanks, I can’t remember what all I ate back then. I did switch over to whole wheat bread and pasta from white, which I still do.

I hope all goes well with getting your staples out. I’m glad I had stitches! I couldn’t wait to get my stitches out, I innocently thought they were keeping the incision tight. I thought I’d feel so much better without them.

Then when they took them out they put a bunch of steri strips on them. They are little almost fabric-like bandaids. (I think it’s more a US thing) and they were worse than the stitches, they looked stupid and I couldn’t shower with them until Thursday (this was Monday) and I’d had a waterproof dressing so no shower restrictions from day one! I was so disappointed and my knee was no less stiff. I now realize it had been general swelling all along bothering me.

We do have steri strips here too. I was concerned as I was bleeding over the length of about an inch of me incision but this seems to have stopped in the last 24 hours. Hoping they will take the staples out and that will be it.

The hospital discharged me with waterproof dressings that I could shower in and they had the added bonus of being flexible so left hospital able to bend to 100 degrees. Since I have been using non waterproof ones which have restricted me so am now about 70-80. Like you say also limit the showering

Hopefully can get the flex back when they are removed.

My family are hoping I will get a shower so they can enter the same room as me :)

I eat (mostly) low carb because of diabetes and it's actually a pretty great way to go! When I first started doing it (a year before I decided to have knee surgery) I lost an obscene amount of weight but that tapered off when my body realized what I was doing. It's resisting my trickery at this point but I and my new pain-free knees are engaged in a walking program that still gets it to give up the pounds. :heehee: Whether or not my body is doing better at fighting inflammation I can't say. Maybe.

Don't worry about your flex. It's in there, in the knee, waiting to be liberated whenever you are ready. It's more important for your incision to heal well right now. Bending the knee does stretch the incision and you want that healing scar line to stay knitted together. Once it's where you need it to be, you can start on more bending. Just be gentle and patient and you will get back your bend -- though maybe not the first day.

Glad to hear your bleeding stopped!

Staples out today. Scar looks to have healed well except the short bit which was bleeding profusely up until a couple of days ago.

Slight leakage into the dressing still but should hold once the staples are removed.

Will need to take care for a bit but looking forward to saying goodbye to them.

Are you on blood thinners, Nick? Because that's often a cause of such oozing.

No, not on any thinners.

So, the staples came out and the nurse was pleased. Ummed and ahh'd one whether it needed a dressing over the concerned area and decided it did. By the time I got outside blood was running out of my shoe.

Went back and they covered it in steri strips and put a compression dressing on it. Had a very uncomfortable night as it was huge but checked today and it all seems good.

I have a follow up with the nurse on Monday so hopefully it will all be good.

So this is the current state of my knee. I had to take the dressing off the nurse applied Friday as it was saturated.

Top of pic is my thigh so its oriented the right way.

Majority looks good the top split is about an inch and the "cruddy looking" bit about an inch and a half.

I guess it will come together as and when its ready but some of it looks very wet so have left it uncovered for a couple of hours to dry out a bit, I don't want trench foot on my knee.

Slight concerns with physio on Tuesday as it seems flexing is what causes it to split.

You conversed during your surgery?? Holy Hell!!! Nope! Put me out!! Although my hospital does give you the amnesia cocktail, so there's a chance I professed love to my Rockstar surgeon. Ha!! Seems you're off to a great start. Hope the bleeding has settled down...

Glad you have follow up with nurse before next PT cuz that looks yucky (is that a medical term?)

Nick, it's looking great. Don't micro manage it!

Just catching up with your saga Nick! No anesthesia!! So jealous. Wish I had known about the no carb protocol at the time of my hips and knees. Sounds similar to the Paleo … no grains, dairy, sugar. My back surgeon recommended it 3 years ago before my surgery and the weight rolled off. Guess I had better be more strict about it again as some of it has creeped back on when I wasn't noticing! :heehee: Hope you nurse's visit tomorrow is fine - your knee looks great and you certainly have been able to keep busy!

It was quite surreal @Katlyw but I think it did help a bit. Recovery room for 15 mins and back on the ward and lucid.

My only concern now is the yucky bit that @SherrieT added to the medical dictionary. Poor @Josephine holds wise counsel but i am an impatient patient but most who I have spoken with on here have probably realised it.

@Josephine and @SusieShoes, do we have any nutritionists on the forum? Would this be something worth looking at or into?

Today is day 1 back at work, 16 days post op.

I can make my job fairly sedentary but am finding the combination of dressing and inactivity is causing my knee to ache, I am also feeling quite tired but some of that can be put down to the inconsiderate neighbour who was partying past midnight last night before I went round and explained the rules according to Nick.

Least today will be short as I am off at 2:30 to see the nurse regarding my dressing when my wound split after having the staples removed. It hasn't bled for 36 hours so am optimistic.

My trip to work was pretty much as expected. 100yd walk, 20 steps down, 150 yd walk, down escalator, 20 yd walk, 20 steps down 50 yd walk. 8 mins on the tube. 15 steps up, 50 yd walk, escalator up, 20 yd walk, 30 steps up, 400yd walk. I took my stick with me too; I don't need it to walk but people give you a wider berth and are more tolerant, especially as I am not doing steps sequentially yet. A 20 min from train to door journey did take 30 mins though.

Have to reverse the trip in an hour or so but am working from home tomorrow (although I have physio).

Slow and steady wins the race apparently, but as I was late had to make my own tea! :)

We used to have a nutritionist on staff and she was wonderful. She died not long ago. She left us with a trove of good nutritional advice though and maybe you will find them helpful.

Nutritional Articles

I wonder if we will ever find another nutritionist as passionate about both nutrition and joint replacement!

Sad to hear that. I will say the advisors on here are top of the class

Helpful and informative, encouraging and cautionary when necessary.

This place has been amazingly helpful for me.

Good to interact with the other "inmates" too

Let us know how your new knee took to its first day on the job. :) Things are going to be a little "off" for a while. You're still dealing with energy drain for another several weeks and your knee may get quite cranky with the extra activity. Good for you for setting up those days at home!

If your knee is super-unhappy (should that happen... it might not), dial back a little on the physio until things settle down. You're doing so well there's no need to push yourself into a setback.
