TKR Sandi's knees, take 2

I walked across my residential street today to take my kids to the bus and had to sit on my Walker and catch my breath for 5 mins. A month ago, I ran a 5k with no issues. Energy drain is legit.

It does it get better. Take care of yourself, try to eat well and invest the time now to get the rest you need. I found just doing one or two extra things in my house every week helped me to start to regain my strength.

This is the first week since my surgery I have felt like doing much. Just taking a shower wiped me out.

Thanks everyone. I know that I am being impatient. I told my daughter tonight that I feel silly complaining about the energy drain or soreness at 6 weeks of a year-long recovery. I am actually doing several things a day, I've started helping with dinner, doing laundry, picking up around the house, etc. I just feel like I have to spend so much time recovering after each activity. I know...patience, Grasshopper.

I get the impatience Sandi... I'm currently sitting on the couch looking around at so much to do around the house, hubby doesn't keep things neat the way I do and I wonder why after 15 yrs in the same house he still doesn't know where certain things live lol...
But I have home delivery groceries coming this afternoon and I have to keep my energy for that. It's sad isn't it when you have to prioritise what you do for energy sake

Oh Zakie and Sandi, I can beat that! We have been living in the same house for 39 years and my husband still asks me where things live. I have a suspicion it's so he can get out of doing things - planned incompetence, I call it.

However, don't worry about the house for now. Your mission is to look after you and your knee.

Haha Celle!! Planned incompetence I like that! May pinch that saying [emoji3]

Month 2-3 is all about balancing activity vs resting. I found I could do a few things a day if I rested in between actvities. I'd dust one room and rest/elevate for a hour, dust another room and rest/elevate for an hour. It takes longer to get things done, but they get done and there's a feeling of accomplishment along with a clean house.

@mom2fencers yes, I HATE sags. I now extend my leg onto an ottoman with a cushion on top that makes it level with the chair seat. I started with 2 min at a time and am now up to 10 min at a time. I think it is really helping.

Bravo!!!!

I am trying to find "easy recipes" for diner to take some of the stress off my husband. I am trying to find something that I can prepare in stages than pop in the oven.

Sandi you and I had our surgeries on the same day. I had a revision from a partial to a full on my right knee. I was told that since I had a revision my recovery would be slower than usual. If they say 4-6 weeks I would be 6, 6-8 I would be the 8 etc.

I'm a little jealous that you are already driving! What knee did you have done? Please tell me it was your left!

We are the opposite in our recovery. My extension was at 0' right at the beginning but I've been slow at my ROM. Just last week got to 107'. The swelling is definitely my nemesis.

This recovery has been much worse than my partial 6 years ago. I was back to work with that one at 12 weeks and I know there is no way that is happening this time!

The endless days of icing and elevating definitely takes a toll. I try and ice at least 4 times a day to get this swelling down and the rest of the time I'm just elevating it. I am lucky that I have been sleeping well since the first week so I wake up refreshed and full of energy and optimism, but as the day wears on the swelling increases and my optimism decreases. I'm not on pain meds anymore during the day so I'm don't nap anymore. I miss those naps now :-( I just get bored. Have binge watched about everything there is on TV and Netflix. I had taped a bunch of shows beforehand but those are pretty much done.

I don't do a whole lot during the day that zaps me of energy. My husband does what he can and I try to turn a blind eye to the things not getting done or are not getting done the way I like LOL.

Dinner time is definitely the worst part of the day as my husband and I try to decide what to eat. Ugh! He's not much of a cook and luckily my appetite has been diminished with the lack of exercise on my part so I don't expect much.

Sorry about the long post! I just started writing to say hello and out it all came :)

@debbyS I am much better in the mornings, so I have been trying to do as much in the crockpot as possible as I can get everything prepared and in the pot in the morning with very little (or nothing) to do in the evenings. 5pm seems to be my nemesis right now :) Since my kids are working long days and the kids are gone at school all day, I really want to help with dinner during the week. The crockpot sure helps.

@flyaway79 yes, it was my left knee :) I need to get my right done later this year so I imagine it will take a bit longer to drive after that one. I think my biggest problem with extension is that I had really bad extension in that leg before the surgery because my knee was soooooo crooked. It's coming along, though. I hope the next one is easier because it is in better shape now (not good, but much better than the left).

You know, I miss the naps too since I am just taking tylenol during the day now. I am also sick of tv and have been reading more. I am the neat freak in the family (probably a little OCD) so it is hard for me not to be able to do what I normally do. And yes, dinnertime is the worst time of day for my knee, and not knowing what is for dinner makes it so much worse.

Yeah, I'm hoping to be driving next week, bc I'm weaning off my daytime narcotics well and sitting in the front seat of the car is getting easier. I'm dreading the next surgery, bc I know if I actually had to use this leg to drive, Id not even be close. But it's getting harder to call in favors getting my son to/from school, so it is what it is. At least he's only in school for 2 more weeks.

@flyaway79 I had my right done on the same day as Sandi and debbys. I'm still a few weeks off driving yet. Swelling has been my enemy too, I'm only around 85 now, it's getting better each day but recovery has been slow at my end.

I saw my OS today for my 6 week checkup. Everything is great. I got the okay to rub cream on my incision to help with the scar and to take a bath or swim if I so desire. I don't see him again until my next surgery (right knee) which is scheduled for August 1. Eeek!

I had my 6 week checkup too! Pretty much the same instructions. I would love to take a bath but afraid I'm just not able to get in and out of the tub yet :-( My husband could help me but I'm afraid of the slipping factor. I don't know how I would get up from the seated position in the tub. I do miss my nightly baths!

Said I could start driving but being my right knee and still having some swelling and ROM issues I think I will pass on that for right now.

I am "tentatively" released to return to work on August 1st. I will follow your progress with your next surgery!
