Sorry to hear how much you hate your leg, pain will do that.
I am going to tag @Josephine for you to address peglegs suggestion.
 
I am really struggling with a lot of things brought on by my surgery :(
 
at some point, since the surgeons do not want to amputate your leg---perhaps you will open yourself to considering a hinged tkr? I think that Pegleg made a good suggestion--not sure where Osswery is? Really Americans seem to have appalling lack of Geography of the the rest of the world!!!

But, a second opinion is well worth your time right now. If a tkr could take away the pain why won't you consider doing it?
 
I have had 8 major surgeries my leg is a mess and I really don't want to try something else that may or may not work I have had enough emotionally and physically but I really appreciate all advice x
 
I was also told fusion would be pain free NOT also not just pain all other problems a fusion brings x

But you discount it. I wonder how rational you are being? Please do not misunderstand. You have been through so much. It would be amazing if you weren't physically and emotionally bankrupt.

All the more reason you need the very best support to enable you to make the right decision for you. Have you thought about asking your GP to refer you to a counsellor who could help you work through what is, afterall, a life changing decision.
 
I have spoken to every tom and dick councillor I am 100% all there and have backing of my gp I am 43 and have not taken this decision lightly thanks for advice x
 
You haven't I am really fed up of ppl saying it's wrong decision and I know 110% it is right for me I wouldn't consider such massive life changing surgery unless I was so sure backed by gp and the 2 ppl I love most my kids x

I think for a lot of people, me included, the thought of amputation is frightening. Yet when I put my fear to one side I can think of several people (mainly from the para olympics) who seem to function brilliantly with false limbs. So its possible that the `wrong decision' people are really expressing their own fears.

How much do you know about the process? eg, what's the average time for getting used to the false limb? Although I have to say, averages, don't mean much. I had a total knee replacement 19 months ago and I am still having problems.
 
I have fully researched it and not everyone is suitable for false limbs and then phantom pains I am willing to take this step as believe only way forward x
 
Safcbabe, I would like to keep talking to you but am a little hesitant as you seem a bit defensive. But I thought about you a lot last night. In an earlier post you said that your surgeon was against amputation. What were his reasons? Carol
 
Hi I really apologise for being defensive my surgeon says I'm young live with it alright him saying that it's driving me crazy x

Absolutely no need. Dear god woman, you are clearly going through so much. I am asking questions, not to be nosy, but to get the full picture. But you are a woman of few words. Have I got this right?

You have had a dodgy knee for a long time, you've had 8 serious ops on the knee. One was going to be a TKR, but on further investigation you ended up with a fusion. Currently not only is the fusion making life difficult but it is also painful. You have been back to see your OS and his response was `live with it'. GP favours amputation, as do you. Is there more or does that cover it? Carol
 
You have got it mostly I want to be able to ride my horse and run marathons again not happening with this stupid fusion x
 
Was the surgeon who carried out the fusion the same one that said `live with it'?
 
Yes they sent me too another one but he was idiot that wouldn't give me a knee I cam go private but going to cost £8000 about x

A friend of mine's husband lost his lower leg in a motorcycle accident, his knee was also injured. Once everything healed his knee was extrememly painful, surgeries to fix it did not work. He opted to have a AKA, he has no regrets and is glad to be painfree.
There are many new treatments for phantom pain being developed, mirror therapy, and the recent identification of the specific nerves involved in transmitting the phantom signals.
I would find a surgeon who will support your decision, and who does lots of amputations.
What ever or when ever your surgery happens I will support you,
