THR Roger's Story

Not bad, Roger. Must be the very first UK member who's had such formal physio!

Good day yesterday but I'm paying the price today!

It was Sue's birthday (wife). I had my second physio session in the morning (no more on that - don't want to set Jo off again :th_heehee:) so we couldn't go out until late morning.

We (Sue) drove over to Arundel (about 25 miles east towards Brighton) and had a pub lunch (very pleasant pub in Burpham) before parking in Arundel to do the magnificent castle - it's been on our To Do list for years. Unfortunately, someone (not me, honest) had failed to notice, when looking up details on the web, that the castle was shut on a Monday :sigh:. No matter; we spent the afternoon exploring the old town, looking in two magnificent old churches (one RC, one Anglican) and poking about in the endless antiques (old tat!) shops. Not really my idea of a great afternoon, but Sue loved it. :thumb:

I must have walked for a couple of hours without cane or crutch. My 'new' hip felt great, no discomfort and super 'smooth' - hooray; unfortunately my 'old' hip was giving me some grief towards the end. I really will have to grit my teeth and get it fixed in the new year.

Today, I feel a bit tired and stiff. Maybe physio and 2 hours walking is still a bit much in one day :what:

Sounds like you had a good day Roger.

Isn't that good though - your new hip feeling so good!

You know what you have to do

"Burpham"? That sounds like ...... 'oops, pardon me'! :th_heehee:

Hi Jamie -

I am on Day 4. The ice has been very helpful for me. They gave it to be in the hospital after every PT session and after my walk and exercises each morning I use it to help pain and swelling.

I too am having big trouble with constipation. What laxative did you use? I'm trying out prunes and prune juice right now but it's so hard to eat ANYTHING when I'm feeling so bloated.

I still get up several times a night too - my husband is an absolute angel for helping me out of bed and to to toilet. First night was probably five or six times. Last night just three times. So I suppose that is good.

Good to hear you are doing well!

Amy

Hi Amy

I don't know if Jamie will pick this up but I think Jaycey has answered your queries in your other thread.

If you are taking proper walks on Day 4 you are doing pretty well in my opinion :thumb:

I'm sure your other problem will resolve itself quite quickly. :yahoo:

I'm convinced that the fitter you are before surgery (and the less time you have been incapacitated by the faulty hip) the quicker the recovery. You will be dancing again in a month or so! :happy dance:

Good luck.

MRI Problems?

I was due to have an MRI scan this afternoon for a long standing ear problem. The hospital rang earlier today to check when I had the replacement hip (they'd obviously just been checking the notes for 'today's' patients). I told them 5 weeks ago and they said it was too soon for an MRI. I said surely the MRI was just on the head/ear region but they were adamant that the metal hip might be affected by the magnetic field and could "loosen" (their word) if done too soon after surgery. They said they would send me a new appointment for sometime after the 6 week point.

This has worried me a bit. Is there really a problem with the prosthesis 'loosening' during an MRI? I remember my (non magnetic!) wedding ring 'rattling' on my finger when I had an MRI before my spinal decompression a few years ago, so I can understand the potential problem.

Could I ever have an MRI of the pelvic region in the future?

Has anyone else had a problem with MRI scans following THR?

I am having a c spine MRI tomorrow. I had an MRI of my left knee 4 months after my right TKR. I will check with the scanner tech who is an old friend of mine and what she doesn't know about MRI scanning isn't worth knowing! As I understand it, the really old scanners were a hazard - or were thought to be a hazard - to joint replacements and would certainly cause heating in spinal rods and plates, etc. But I believe that modern ones have been adapted to be safer. I will ask friend Liz.

Thanks.

I'm really interested in the answer to this.

I will also seek my Consultant's opinion when I see him next week.

Great question Roger. I'm glad you asked this. As a person with lower back problems (also had decompression the same year you did) I would never have questioned an MRI after THR.

I'll look forward to the expert advice from Jo.

Roger, I have had a lumbar and then a hip MRI. With the hip they used a metal subtracting scanner that not everyone can do. They did not even have me take off my wedding rings to do these. They did feel a little wierd. I hope you can get your scan done soon.

Well, my friend said this: in general it's safe unless the implants are less than about 3 months old. In that case, the scan can interrupt the bone and soft tissue growth and therefore cause loosening of either an uncemented implant or the cement.

She also confirmed that there is not point in doing and MRI scan on or close to an area with implants as the scan will just result in a void on the pictures.

Not sure if our local MRI has this capability; however, it's a new facility so maybe they have the latest technology - I hope so! I guess I will have to be guided by the technicians but I will also check with my hip Consultant next week.

Thanks, Josephine.

The radiologist(?) I spoke to this morning mentioned the 6 week point. Maybe this is OK because the ear is some distance from the hip? :what:

It's a little bit worrying, though, as I obviously don't want any possibility of the implant loosening. :skeptical:

I will double check with my hip Consultant next week.

Another milestone achieved, I've finished the Clexane injections - hooray. Maybe the 'bruising' on my tummy will have a chance to settle down now. :yes 4:

It's strange how one or two of the injections really hurt (and raise a bruise the next day) but 90% of them were almost painless. :what:

I also just received a new appointment for the MRI scan on my ear - 5th November, which is nearly 8 weeks post (hip) surgery. I will check with my hip Consultant next week if he thinks this is OK - we don't want any 'fireworks' ( UK joke!).

Well done on another milestone Roger! I agree - no fireworks! Do let us know what your OS says.
